      He got ripped off, big time. All he had to do was go to a reputable coin dealer, and he could have sold it for $20k at auction easily. That's without it even being graded by PCGS/ NGC. If it's in as good condition as they say it is, it could be one of the highest grades in the world and an even bigger premium would have been paid for it after it was slabbed.
      People who go to Pawn Shops with THIS type of stuff are just stupid. His original asking price was about $600 away from what the Gold was worth, alone.

    • @godsmacked1000

      +Max Wilson what's slabbed?

    • @imaxdigital7052
      @imaxdigital7052 8 лет назад +3

      Edwin
      When a coin is graded by one of the major and trusted coin grading associations, it's put inside a tamper-proof, hand-holdable "Slab." Once this is done, a coin officially carries a trusted grade that dictates it's asking price.
      Here's a random example of a slabbed/ graded "Spanish Fleet Doubloon" coin: (Notice how it's graded at MS63... that mean it's in Mint State,+3. The highest grade a coin can receive is MS70.

    • @matthewmcnamara2306
      @matthewmcnamara2306 6 лет назад +25

      Bryan Jones because the auctions for these kinds of items have seriously high commission. There is also the fact that the kinds of auctions where this coin would get the full 18,000 are quite rare. He would probably have to sit on it for a month or two. And there is also the risk of him putting it in for auction and it not getting any bids because there are no collectors who want this kind of coin in the room. That way he still has to pay some auction fees but he's taking it home. Another risk is that it seems for about 10,000 or less at auction. It's easier to let someone else take all those risks than to do it yourself. So 11,000 is a good deal

    • @matthewmcnamara2306
      @matthewmcnamara2306 6 лет назад +3

      AWE39V8 !!!! AWE39V8 !!!! If it was that easy no one would put any item in an auction house. Very few people on this planet are willing to spend the value of this coin on eBay. Too much risk of getting a counterfiet. Collectors will only pay top dollar if they see the item they are going to by prior to the purchase and have a third party authenticate it. Part of why auction houses charge such a high commission is due to the fact that they will have their own people authenticate all rare and expensive items. And since the auction houses reputation is on the line they make sure the job is done properly. This doesn't happen on eBay. So you have to trust that the seller is genuine about the product and it's value. That coin will go to an auction house, everyone who is interested will know it's exact monetary value before the auction begins, and the rest is down to what that coin is worth to them personally. There is a lot of security in dealing through an auction house. Rick will put this coin in an auction. Both the auction house and rick will let everyone who may possibly be interested in it and has the money to pay for it will be alerted that this coin is up for sale and they will be in attendance. Compare all of that to the random chance that two people who can afford this coin and want it will type in '1715 Spanish fleet coin' into Ebays search bar and that they both won't just wait until the last second to place a bid that is under the coins value but above what they believe the reserve price will be and that the coin will go to someone for a couple hundred dollars over the reserve instead of six grand above the actual value, which is something that normal people do when spending twenty or thirty dollars on a single item never mind something worth twenty to thirty thousand dollars. And eBay doesn't sound like it's such a viable option anymore does it? Because if eBay was an option for these kinds of things then antique stores, auctions and all forms of antique trade would have just went bankrupt when eBay and Amazon blew up

    • @AndrewClunie2011
      @AndrewClunie2011 6 лет назад +2

      Sit on it for a month or two? No, you're talking at least a year for this plus probably at least 30% commision for something like this and then tax and other fees such as advertisement etc. By the end, even if it went for 18k he would be lucky to get 11k out of it, this is why Pawn Shops are so great but so many people, like the ones in the comment section of these videos have no idea.

    • @MrRedsjack
      @MrRedsjack 6 лет назад

      AWE39V8 !!!! eBay is only good if you are careful about purchasing scammers and if you have no feedback selling an expensive thing that could be fake is very hard.

      @samkom33 8 лет назад

      may and may? of course everything can loose its value.. but say stocks is a very insecure investment...
      if you get say a new depression with hyperinflation like during the great depression in say usa and germany where a bread costed 5.000.000.00 mark..
      it was cheaper to burn paper money than say buy wood ore fuel... same with stocks
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperinflation_in_the_Weimar_Republic
      it costed 5.000.000.000 mark for a stamp to a letter. hehe

    • @samkom33
      @samkom33 8 лет назад

      i have never seen a country guarantee stocks ore money..... i for example got som bank stocks when my father died, and i kept them instead of selling them when the price fell to half during the little depression in late 80s in norway...
      the bank asked for help from the state, and the state demanded that the bank had to zero the stocks for the state to put in founds, so in a way you can say the state and the bank stole the stock holders money...
      silver on the other hand will never be wourtless, not as long as its used so much in industry and electronics and medical equipment

It's too bad that it seems that there hasn't ever been an episode where the expert says it's worth a lot more than the customer's asking price, and where the customer is grateful enough to sell it at their asking price instead of them jacking up their asking price even more. The idea that the pawn broker is suddenly willing to give the person more than that person's asking price, yet that person then tries to jack up the price even more, that comes across as ungrateful.

RESPECTS TO THIS SHOW AND RICK AND THE STARS. that owner of the coin need to give Carl some cash he might not need it, but you just got more than you thought you could get. imho.

    I wonder if there's EVER been an episode or youtube clip of Pawn Stars where not only did Rick offer more than the person's asking price, but where that person was grateful enough to take the deal instead of price haggling with Rick. I'm guessing that's never happened on Pawn Stars. It would be a cool to see something like that, though.

    What I have learned:
    1. Every expert in the world on every subject lives in Las Vegas.
    2. All these people live near this pawn shop
    3. They all know Rick, who is a "buddy."
    4. What a coincidence.

    • @Steveman27
      @Steveman27 3 года назад +1

      5. If the customer finds out the item is a lot more valuable than what they thought it was after an expert comes in to look at it, they become ungrateful by trying to haggle with the pawn broker's offer even though the pawn broker's offer was even more than that person's asking price. It'd be nice to see at least one of those customers actually be grateful where they accept the offer that was higher than their asking price when they walked in. Too bad it seems that that's never happened on the show.

  • @nonplayerzealot4

    The date of that coin is 1712. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think they used the initial 1 in the dates on those coins because they didn't fit into the design, so you only see the final 3 digits of the date. Only one of 12 of the ships in the fleet survived the hurricane. That's just FYI on the history that wasn't stated in the video. As to price, I'm looking at past hammer prices of other 1712 Lima 8 escudo gold coins on Heritage Auctions site (a premier auction site that has sold numerous multi-million dollar coins). The two highest graded coins (both NGC, MS63) sold for $20,700 in 2012 and $17,265 in 2014. That 20,700 matches the highest price sold at this auction house for the same STYLE of coin. A 1699 coin of the same style in MS64 sold for the same price in 2008. Therefore, the best this guy could've expected to get at auction back during the filming of this PS episode was 21K. He got a little underpriced because that coin appeared to be an MS63 level coin. It was mint state 60 or higher for sure. Dude left a chunk of change on the table in this deal. Rick worked him a bit compared to some of the other coin deals I've seen on the show.

      In order to make 18k+ you need to put it for an auction. After that the auction house gets to keep 25% of the sold value. If Rick sold it for 18k at an auction he gets to keep 13.5k. The man who sold it for 11k does not have to worry about the unpredictable nature of an auction. I feel Rick gave him a good offer, cause he has to put work to make that money back.

      Some coins appreciate much faster than others and some remain stagnant despite their relative rarity (either absolute rarity or condition rarity). A lot of things in coins makes no sense as far as that goes. Identical coins in conditions similar to the one this guy sold haven't appreciated too much even since that epi of PS aired. Auction figures have shown that to be true. Market and desirability can stagnate how much a coin appreciates. What Dude had there IS a rare coin, no doubt about it. Coins from that era are all fairly rare to begin with and especially ones that were as well-struck (centered) and in such good condition are even rarer. The coin he had even had more luster than some gold coins that are hundreds of years newer. Problem is, how many people are in interested in high-grade Lima 8 Escudos? There are MANY modern US cents that rival or exceed the retail price of that coin and US cents are very popular to collect, even with rich collectors. Gold Liberty and St. Gaudens double eagles of a rarity equivalent to this coin in the show would go for mortgage money. Mostly because US double eagles are popular.

    According to my understanding, 5 Spanish ships were sunk in a hurricane in 1715, while in transit back to Spain, heavily laden with silver & gold treasure. This occurred just offshore from modernday Vero Beach, Ft Pierce, Sabastian Inlet. The following year, Spain sent a salvage expedition and recovered most of the treasure. What remains unsalvaged to this day will forever be available to be randomly found occasionally. I have a 1 Reale silver coin from that origin, found in 1984.
