      Hey Anne! I hope so too, its a new genus for me, so for now I am happy to keep it alive, but eventually will demand the blooms :)

    Your Psychopsis looks very healthy, with it's 2 growths. I hope you get a spike soon! I used to have a Psychopsis Mendenhall and I struggled with it in my home. I ended up putting it outdoors and it really enjoyed the warm temperatures, the buds activated, but unfortunately I ended up rotting the orchid. I really loved the mottled leaves it had, maybe I'll get another one, one day.
    I don't know if you've seen the orchid tag Nina and I did. It's about picking an orchid you think represents you. We each tagged 2 channels. It's a fun video, I hope you don't mind, I tagged you. 😊 😉

    You certainly have a very healthy plant and I am sure it will send out a flower spike as soon as your two new growths mature. It has been so interesting to watch the other CareCollab videos and even though we all have different growing environments, it seems to me that even with a little setback this particular orchid has the will to survive. Thank you so much Orchideya - what us your humidity level where your Psychopsis grows as I see you have it amongst others in your grow room?

    • @Orchideya
      @Orchideya  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Margaret! Humidity in my orchid room is around 50-60%, I don't want to go any higher because it is a room in the house and walls and floors are not designed for very humid conditions, so I use my frog humidifier during summer a/c run and winter heating run just to boost it a bit, because during winter our humidity can drop down to 20-30%. It definitely helps to start with healthy psychopsis plant but it seems like I still need to be careful. While making video i looked inside the pot and noticed some rotting roots, i think I overpotted it a bit , so now I am thinking about moving it to smaller pot, so need to disturb it again, but probably better sooner than later while it still has all those active root tips.... Learning continues...

    Thanks for participating and joining this carecollab adventure. Hope you will join in for an update video in a few months time.
    I don't know why, but it seems like in the US and Canada P kalihi is sold as P papilio. Papilio has purplish blotched leaves, at least mine do and those are seedlings from old plants in the nursery collection I bought them from.
    Anyway, two years to mature a bulb seems a long time to me. I've been growing them for 4+ years and in the beginning I struggled a lot with them but since the last two years, new growths mature in 4-6 months. Getting it to spike is a bit tricky. It needs good light an temperatures above 24C - 75°F. I've tricked mine on 2 occasions to spike by withdrawing fertilizer and less watering for a few weeks. It seems to bring it in survival mode and starts pushing out a spike. Be careful not to overdo it because the roots may go. During this time I make sure it gets high humidity and spray/mist at least 2 times a day to keep up with humidity.

      Thank you for the info, I will try that when the new bulbs fatten on it. Interesting about spots on the leaves, I am pretty sure when I bought this plant it had spots on the leaves, but they started disappearing here, which I attributed to maybe getting less light... Thank you for organizing this carecollab, it was interesting to see all the videos...

    That is a big plant you've got, mine is quite big as well 😅 but mine definitely doesn't take 2 years to develop a growth, it took about 4 months to develop a pseudobulb and then maybe another 2 months to grow a spike. But I don't let my Psychopsis media to dry out at all, I find it enjoys the water supply a lot 🤷 But yours is a species, so not too sure if they would grow the same way? It certainly doesn't look dehydrated 👍👏

    • @Orchideya
      @Orchideya  3 года назад

      Interesting, I usually let it dry between waterings because I am paranoid about rotting the roots... Maybe I did underwater it, I will try to experiment carefully with watering more... Thank you!

    Hi Orchideya! Your plant is looking very healthy and vigorous! I hope you will get a spike when the bulbs mature! I don’t know if that is what it needs to spike but it would be good if that is all it requires! Fingers crossed for you! Have a great week!

    NICE PLANT!! Thank you for the VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO, and straight to the point, the best kind of video, I am especially glad to see you growing yours in bark, I am not a fan of spaghnam moss as a growing medium myself. I dread rewrapping all my kokadama style pots as they have grown algea on them, so its gonna b a must......yuuk..
    anyways, thanks again, I'm thinking I'll be repotting mine very similarly to your, somehow I ended up with 3, one was given to me by a society member reducing his collection, so I really would prefer not to kill his!! lol.

    • @Orchideya
      @Orchideya  3 года назад

      Thank you so much for your nice comment! I am ok with sphagnum but only in a small pot, Sphag in larger pots tends to dry too long, so I use bark in a see-through pot. I always use clear pots with bark so I could see the inside to decide when to water(bark is deceiving, can be dry on the top but wet inside). Wow, so cool, you have three psychopsis plants, are they all different species?
      About algae - if it is on the moss and pots, then it shouldn't bother the plant, because it only is on surface where the light is, the moss inside should be clean. I used to re-moss my neofinetias very often because of green algae but then realized that it bothers me more than plants, lol. I now only repot them once a year in spring....

      @@Orchideya Sadly, I have "misplaced" the tag for the smallest one, and it's bulbs are a lighter green that the other 2. Both of those are Mendenhal's, however 1 is the alba ' Yellow Buterfly' variation, so hopefully the missing tag gets discovered while I'm cleaning my orchid room while my orchids r enjoying being outdoors and the rain. Hopefully I will b able to get them to bloom as the gifted one has a new growth and my largest has 2 new growths😁 So, in your opinion, with the new growth's and all, would it b a good time to repot them? The gifted one definitely needs it as the new growth is really squished between the older bulb and the side of the pot. The larger 1 with 2 growth's still has plenty of room, just still the original pot it came in, and the little one has alot of roots above the potting mix, also in original 2 inch pot.
      Do they enjoy room to spread or being snug in their pots? just interested in your opinion......please and Thank you
      😊😊😊

      @@beckyconnor790 Haha, I am so bad at keeping the tags in the pots, always misplace and loose them and sometimes need to go back to my videos to see what was the name... Alba sounds very nice and unusual, I would love to see the blooms. In my opinion they are better to be repotted when there is new growth coming, it shows that the plant is in active growth mode and should adjust easier after repot. I am not sure about time of the year, but since they don't require rest, they probably able to grow all year round, so it might be not that important, as long as there is active growth happening. I think orchids in general don't like to be overpotted much, I usually go for the smallest pot that would comfortably fit the roots. I actually just moved mine into smaller pot because I realized that some roots rotted away and pot was too large for the remaining ones. Just my opinion, though, I might be wrong as I don't have much experience with this type :)

  • @Rockdoc2174
    @Rockdoc2174 3 года назад

    They don't like to be disturbed so you may have slowed it down a bit with a repot but mine also grows at different rates depending on day length and temperature. We've cooled markedly over the last couple of weeks so mine has slowed right down and isn't using as much water so I'll have to adjust how much I give it because staying wet for too long also makes them slow down. I try to have mine go from wet to just damp in about a week to ten days and I don't dry it out ever. According to Toeki's World's video, they come from tropical rain forests so they should grow all year round and never have a winter rest.

    • @Orchideya
      @Orchideya  3 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for the info. Its nice to know that they don't need a winter rest, the spot my plant is staying in never goes below 18C during winter, so maybe that's why it was continuing growing, although very slow. Not disturbing is hard to accommodate because now I think I need to move it to smaller pot, but eventually I will figure it out, hopefully plant will endure one more repot...

    Wow...mine is a runt compared to yours! What a beautiful plant you have! All mine thinks to do is flower! I don't think it put up a new PB this year.
    I think papilio has some of the largest and long lasting flowers. I'm hearing that others like mariposa have blooms that last just 2 weeks, but papilio lasts the longest of all the psychopsis I've ever had. 4-6 weeks is what it does for me.
    I don't know why the base of your PBs haven't fattened. Even more curious is why it hasn't put out a new flower spike. I'm not sure if the hybrids are easier to create spikes etc.
    Genetics probably has a lot to do with what each plant does. And many growers don't pick up on the cues of what signals the plant to grow, and spike. Is it light, temps, moisture?
    There was a grower here in Montreal who used to summer it outside. It was a gorgeous plant, but not a single spike. He never fertilized his plant because he thought it wasn't important. I don't know if he ever flowered it.
    Congratulations even if you don't have a spike at the moment. It looks really really great compared to mine.

    • @Orchideya
      @Orchideya  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! I wish mine would think about blooming a bit more. I am thinking maybe when I repotted it from sphagnum to bark - it set back the plant a bit, I read that they don't like to be disturbed too much. Also I see that transitioning did damage some roots, luckily I see that new roots are coming up, but maybe all that slowed the process of fattening the bulb, it just didn't have enough nutrients to do that. I am now thinking that I need to move it into smaller pot as this one seems to stay wet too long, but am scared to disturb it again. Really hard to figure plant....

      @@Orchideya
      It depends on how hot it is and how fast the roots are growing. You could punch in some holes to add more root ventilation. I'm not sure if the roots have to be tight in the pot for them to bloom. My root ball is pretty dense but it is a wee bit of a plant. My money goes on your plant surviving the next 10 years.
      Still waiting for other care collabs to show....It will have to wait until tomorrow.
