  • PRISONER DEAL WITH RUSSIA: "Point victory goes clearly to Putin" Did Scholz bow to pressure from the USA?
The historic prisoner exchange between Russia, Belarus and several Western countries has caused a stir around the world. US President Joe Biden stated that US allies, including Germany and Slovenia, had to make decisions that were against their immediate interests. Chancellor Olaf Scholz in particular was described by Biden as "unbelievable". While Biden and Putin staged the exchange, Scholz was sober and matter-of-fact.
Russian President Putin staged the deal as his success. Evan Gershkovich, a US journalist, was Putin's biggest bargaining chip. While they were flying home, Gershkovich and the other released prisoners received a call from Biden in the White House. Biden had invited relatives of the released prisoners to the Oval Office, which was staged for publicity.
That same evening, the returnees were greeted at the airport in Maryland by Biden and the presidential candidates. In New York, a ticker displayed the message "Free at last." The Wall Street Journal's editorial office erupted in jubilation when the news of Gershkovich's release arrived.
In the studio, WELT investigative reporter Alexander Dinger talks about the different stagings of the countries involved. Scholz was the most reserved. There was speculation that Scholz acted under pressure from the USA. The Tiergarten murderer, Germany's most prominent prisoner, was transferred several times and finally released because the USA wanted Gershkovich in return.
Putin wanted to bring the Tiergarten murderer back because he had done him a great service. The strong imagery when Putin welcomed him in Moscow was meant to convey something.
The perspective of the Tiergarten murder victim's relatives is often forgotten in the debate. Critics fear that the "gates to hell have been opened" by allowing convicted people to be released by force. It is to be hoped that a spiral of arrests and exchanges will not occur.
