i love the wacky sense of humor of the whole saga, i've have played every entry, my favorite one has to be Groove on fight, yeah it's a pretty weird game between the weirdness of the same saga, but i think it deserves some love.
Glad that someone still remembers that game! Pooch actually has quite a sad backstory. Yeah, I know, weird to have a sad story in such a silly-over-the-top game.
Underrated for sure. Never heard of/played until I got a 4slot mvs and 161 multicart. It takes the quirkiest of Japanese humor/culture and marries it with KoF mechanics.
Great game Matrimelee is VGE. I remember that they had them brand new in stock on the Neo Store shopping page. At first i didn't know what to make of it. I did show interest on purchasing a English AES version of Matrimlee, but went with an English AES version of Rage of the Dragons instead. Too bad i didn't have the funds to acquire both at the time...But what can you do. 8^) Well done as always VGE. Keep up the awesome work you do to benefit us all kind sir. 86) Anthony..
Learned about this today. Thanks for highlighting. I'm just getting back into fighting games and going back to include unique fighters on my mame cab. This is great. So this is known as Shin Goketsuji ichizoku bonnou no kaihou. Wow to prices on the OST! I lost it when I saw Grandma throwing her dentures with the singer on the bench. I must get into this game. Would you say it's fun broken overall or just more for the spectical and soundtrack?
I do own a kit for the MVS of this game. I also own this on PS2 and have this on the multi for the Taito Type x2. This game is absolutely insane. Love the soundtrack. Alien song is my favorite. The Last boss is mad cheese. Thanks for the review.
I dig Matrimelee... haven't gotten into it as much as I've always wanted to though. Ever since reading about it on HardcoreGaming101, it sounded awesome. But when I finally got to try it, I just didn't dive in that much :P Not yet anyway. I do love my fighters, so I usually am juggling a bunch at any given time, and dedicating a lot of attention/memory to Matrimelee's specific systems or roster has just never become a priority. I'll be playing Asura Buster and Slap Happy Rhythm Busters at the same time, or Phantom Breaker Omnia and Rage of the Dragons, or Asuka 120% Burning Fest FINAL and Dan Ku Ga, etc. ONE OF THESE DAYS, I'll finally dedicate some more effort to getting really into Matrimelee, I swear...
still remember first time i saw this one on arcade, debu song was so loud and no other games had vocals lol with the time this is one of my favorite neo geo games the songs have lots of japanese pop culture references... the guy with the red scarf is a reference to masked rider the computer one look like reference pc98 stuff chinnen one is funny one, budist exorcist/diviners aliens one have pretty fun ending
What's the story behind the Rage of Dragons guest characters in this game? Definitely looks like a fun time. Interesting how Annie's name is spelled as "Anny" in this game and she now has a funny hat. Is Groove on Fight recommended?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Meant to mention that Matrimelee is the one fighting game (along with Power Stone 2) my friends always want to play. It's a real crowd pleaser.
Cool that you just come out and say that this is your favorite. I only ever played the ps2 version, which can be forced to 480p, I believe. So do you play this with the original mvs joystick?
First time me seeing and playing this game I just thought it was the strangest and weirdest fighting game I've seen in a long time, but dang THE MUSIC even though I don't understand the vocals, I haven't heard great music in a video game especially a fighting game since Street Fighter 2 and The Last Blade 1 & 2.
So uh the snes isn't exactly know for good neo geo conversions :S but there is a version of this series i believe...Gouketsuji Ichizoku, is that half decent? Reason why i am asking is that it has retro achievments and i do get some enjoyment of that :)
The SNES version was based on the first game, which wasn't on Neo Geo. I'd say it's fine if not for the wait times between matches, tinny audio, and the endings being cut in the US version.
I have the 161 Cart and never chose this game because I've never heard of it!! I assumed it was a sports game based on the title. I'll have to give it a go later!! Side note and kind of unrelated, my ALL TIME Fav BGM is Wan Fu' stage music from the original Samurai Showdown... :-D
You should really try the PS2 version of this game, it's like an update/pseudo sequel that adds and changes some things around It's also well known on the Japanese internet due to the unlockable music video featured in the game "Let's go Onmyoji" seriously look up レツゴー陰陽師 it's a amazing
@@VideoGameEsoterica This is what I’m talking about. I find it hard to believe it came from this of all things. ruclips.net/video/ec7JCwez5IY/видео.html
the final boss is such effing cheese, and the humor doesn't translate... honestly knocks this game down a few pegs. I own an authentic neo-geo cart of it but prefer waku for weird fighters by far.
This game is my white whale. Stupid expensive on either neo geo format MVS or AES and there's a PS2 version that changes a few things that also insanely rare and expensive. There's also a type x Sequel that runs on PCs but the buttom mapping gets messed up. I have the rest of the series on my Super Famicom/PS1/Saturn. The second game might be even more insane than Matrimeele.
I don't want to tell you what I paid for Matrimelee when I bought it....because that was over a decade ago. Ive got the Type X sequel under my desk as I type this. Because of course I do lolol
@@VideoGameEsoterica maybe the Sequel works under Tekno parrot. I haven't bothered to try. Just booting it on PC light kick maps to L no matter what you do.
its a pain to remap but yes it works on Teknoparrot too. But I don't enjoy it on PC...getting video to display in the proper resolution is a nightmare so I have it on the Type X. Looks great in 480p when you toggle the dip switch for that mode
@@VideoGameEsoterica fingers crossed for some Switch compilation or something I'm a fan of the whole series and use it as a Reference point for my own game that'll probably never get made
This is one of the main reasons I own a Neo Geo AES. Love this game.
Me too. Id never sell it...fav cart in my collection
I actually checked it out a few months ago on my MiSTer precisely BECAUSE you were talking about it so much 😂
I will always talk about Matrimelee. It's my own crusade to get more people to play it!
🙏🏾 thanks so much for raising awareness for this title. So much charm!
It’s my fav fighter of all time :)

They are all fun in their own way
Glad that someone still remembers that game!
Pooch actually has quite a sad backstory. Yeah, I know, weird to have a sad story in such a silly-over-the-top game.
People still def remember the game :) just not a lot of us haha
Honestly the soundtrack is quite impressive with lots of vocals. Not often done. (Specifically on the AES/MVS)
Yes it’s some impressive sound quality for Neo Geo for sure!
THIS! I was not sure if i accidentally put a neo geo cd game in my aes folder?!
Haha they could get good audio out of roms when they needed to
Poochy: I have to go now. My planet needs me.
Note: Poochy died on the way back to his home planet.
lolol Poochy is the weirdest no doubt
Simpsons reference 👍🏻
Poochy is weird in Matrimelee AND in Itchy and Scratchy. Weirdly they are both red too...coincidence?
There was another game in the series which had Billy and Jimmy from double dragon I think.. That was amazing..
Rage of the Dragons
Amazing title card!
Appreciate that! I’m into it too :) (obviously)
Six years ago Neostore still had Matrimelee Aes in stock for $180 and SVC Chaos for $230. Should have bought more than one.
haha wish I could go back in time and buy a LOT of AES games I didnt get
Underrated for sure. Never heard of/played until I got a 4slot mvs and 161 multicart. It takes the quirkiest of Japanese humor/culture and marries it with KoF mechanics.

Fun overall and the soundtrack and spectacle just add even more
hard to believe that such game is running on a hardware released in 1990
Seriously. Late stage Neo geo games look nothing like launch titles.
I do own a kit for the MVS of this game. I also own this on PS2 and have this on the multi for the Taito Type x2. This game is absolutely insane. Love the soundtrack. Alien song is my favorite. The Last boss is mad cheese. Thanks for the review.
Happy to do the review. The joys of building a PC song is still my favorite
It happened to me the same thing but with Capcom's Red Earth released for the CPS3 system.
I have a review for that soon. In like two weeks

I like this game very much too

Groove on Fight is super fun. I recommend it. Noise Factory had a hand in Rage of the Dragons so you get characters from that game here
Same here VGE. I miss those days...and those prices as well. 8^)
Anthony..
Got a complete copy of this for MVS for a hundred dollars a long long time ago.
Nice. I got my AES copy for like $400 12 or 13 years ago

The final boss is unbeatable!
I've never finished this game! But I love it anyway! 💓🙈
You can beat her if you spam certain attacks...and then see the endings...which are pretty fun!
Its what I would call a very Japanese game!
Not one I like personally but I can see the fun appeal.
Yes either people love it or can’t be bothered with it
I thought you said Darkstalkers was your favourite fighting game!
I have a lot of favorites 🤣 I’ll probably say the same about MotW. They feel so different as to be in diff categories
