NBA Players don’t play pure basketball anymore. There’s flopping, trying to get fouls and other extra curricular activities that cause unnecessary body movement, collisions and other injuries.
I think it’s the spread out court leading to more injuries. Watch an 80s game and everything was so compressed inside 16 feet. No long rebounds to hustle after and no flying around to contest 3s. Also, back then you couldn’t draw charges as easily or much at all as today so less collisions in the paint.
These two guys never got hurt…. What they are saying is true…. The first time I played ball after boot camp I was dead after one game.. before boot camp I would run 5+ games several times per week…. Different type of being in shape….
I think the spacing of the game is a major reason for all of the injuries. In the past, players were clustered up in the paint. They're much more spread out now due to the three point threat. They build up moree speed and momentum in the space so the sudden turns and collisions have more impact. It's like kickoffs in football.
I gotta theory that some of the injury prone stars of today would've been out of the league a lot sooner 20+ years ago when resting players wasn't so normalized. Franchises and the league in general are more invested in having stars stick around for as long as possible. From a business perspective, I'm sure they would've loved if guys like Grant Hill, D-Rose, B-Roy, Oden, etc. stayed healthy for longer than they did.
The fact of the matter is with all the rule changes and such, the speed if the game is a lot faster today. So while less ohysical contact, non contact injuries are on the rise, which are the hardest to reciver from. Strength and conditionning, sports science and ohysical therapy have gotten BETTER (just look at how many players whove had achilles tears, acl tears, are still playinf vs. 10 years ago)
1) Players that survive are built different. 2) In the old days most guys got burned out in college if they couldn't take it. 3) players are not only a bit more explosive, many are heavier and put on that lifting weight earlier.. Some guys are just not built to take the pounding on the joints.
And not only injuries these catastrophic injuries. Ankles dangling Achilles tears left n right. It’s like tht D Rose acl opened a portal. Ever since then nonstop major injuries.
I agree with what yall said, it does mean a lot to be in shape and to practice and to have that hard-nosed approach. However, I think another contributing factor is due to how wide open and spaced out the game is today. Bigs and help defenders have to close out from further distances and that results in more high speed, mid-air collisions. Especially at the rim. Offensive players get downhill going to the cup, and a big or help defender is tryna cover that space and sometimes they’re late and it results in a weird and awkward collision and the players fall and hit the ground. I feel like this happens way more than it used to 20-30 years ago. Too many players are worried about initiating contact and tryna draw fouls. Late close outs on 3pt shooters and they take their landing space away and the player come down and roll an ankle. The spacing of the game definitely contributes to injuries in my opinion.
Old dudes always yap, players from the 90s except for a elite few are trash and wouldn’t have a roster spot in today’s league, Lmaooo “the truth “ is an un athletic wing, an average at best 3pt shooter , he would barely make a roster spot today

Nah. Knees and back injures. The shoes top notch nowadays and this is coming from a 38 year old 2 years post op back surgery but still hooping. The shoes saving me 😂 You gotta get a good pair tho. The market flooded right now

Getting hurt because of those low top shoes but that's the style now. Ever wonder why networks never mention how many more players started getting hurt in this era? They don't want to bash shoe companies
Brotha low tops came first before the highs the shoes are the big issue. It’s a combination of movement style higher pace and the increase in pylo work and not enough strength work

NBA players these days are more explosive but aren't built for longevity. It's like the fancy car that can go 0-60 in 3 seconds but when you start putting some miles on it, it starts to break down
I read a post somewhere that blamed it on the 3 point shot. He claims the additional running players have to do to cover 3 point shoters have added to the injury problem. Think he has a point. I know the shot has been around a while but the emphasis over the last 10 years could have increased the injury factor exponentially.
I'm an old head but I will admit that the style of play may contribute to the injuries too. With the pace and the spacing, the defenders have more ground to cover. The closeouts and defensive recoveries has to be hard on the lower body and joints.
1. Low top shoes 2. Replacing basketball games with basketball "training" 3. Shutting down instead of playing through pain. 4. Lack of halfcourt post game. All big men do now is sprint up the court for alley oops.
The rate of injury has increased 2% with a massive increase in pace, explosiveness, but player longevity is also up overall. These old heads are yapping
Olm man strength is a real thing if you ever run into it. Just a different breed of men that never stopped moving/working their whole entire lives. We dont make them like that anymore and if you look around society reflects that
Train more. Train hard. They show some great play. Work hard to get into the NBA. Get drafted. Get money Everything stops. To stay injury free, train...
I think it’s the speed of the game that’s causing all these injuries. That pace, over a long season & playoffs is tough on the body.. KG and dem played at such a slower pace, it shouldn’t surprise them that there were less injuries
Facts. Not to mention these kids starting at age 5 training at a higher clip. All those extra miles over the years before even getting to the NBA breaking the body down.
Players may be reporting injuries more openly today than keeping it to themselves and playing through it. It’s a two way street here and the data may be inaccurate because of the change of times.
Players aren’t Lifting weights and putting on muscle. Muscles hold joints and ligaments together not the other way around. The excessive strain on the body from being built like a broomstick and only working on your core is the number 1,2,3 reason players are injury prone today
@JohnnytNatural what bs. Muscle memory is muscle memory whether you weigh 165 or 220. And your game is definitely gonna be affected if you can’t stay on the court cause you keep blowing out your knee like embitch or tear a hamstring every 2 weeks
Sounds more like muscle imbalances to me. Some people have weaker prime mover muscles and the stabilizers or support muscles are overcompensating for the prime mover muscle so it can lead to injury.
Shoes not mentioned again? Last time I saw Draymond making fun of Chuck’s plain, comfy and foot & leg protecting shoes on live TV … Well, plain, flat sole shoes are an effective way to decrease injuries and yes, it means less endorsement money for the players and maybe less dunks, but the gain in injury reduction will be there.
Studies have shown that young athletes are developing muscular injuries at higher rates than ever and the data is pointing to specified training. I think the advanced understanding of what is needed to play basketball has led to players overtraining particular muscles earlier in their careers. This would explain why so many players are reaching their athletic peak before even making the league and looking worn down by the end of the first contract.
I think they have more muscle and explosiveness than ever from training. More potential for injury. Also, landing on two feet and toe running will extend your longevity if you got bad knees.
I bet a lot of people get hurt defending this new wave of super fast, shifty players with elite ball handling skills and footwork. I know De'Aaron Fox has put a few people on IR.
They don't do traditional strength training anymore I bet. They almost certainly do highly specialized workouts/lifts that lend to the higher level of skills we see today. But KG is right there are so many guys in the league with very little definition on their bodies. The tom brady effect of being only as strong as you have to be
Players get injured more today because you have to run around a lot more in today's style of game , a powerfoward has to chase ppl around the 3 point line instead of camping out in the paint
I don't know maybe you should use the off season for I don't know rest not playing every pick up game maybe they wouldn't be balding and aging early keep in shape in off season and go from there
Paul Pierce really doesn’t have a say in this. Dude was rolled back on to court in a wheelchair… then miraculously played like nothing happened to him, and his team won
I also think that more players today just don't love to play basketball. When I listen to Ron Artest tell stories about all the basketball dudes used to play outside of NBA or when Chuck talks about Dirk. You realize these dudes played ALOT of basketball that they didn't have to. Someone like Anthony Edwards you can tell that dude loves basketball.

practice, stretching after each workout, then masages at the end, u have to be unlucky to be injured this much And most guys practice alone with a trainer instead with they'r teammates
They play faster, there moves aren't simple so it's weird stress on the joints, that slow post play saved a lot of people's joints. Think about this how many seasons would Ewing be hurt if he was playing like a wing Nd playing so fast?
It’s not that fast… it looks fast because of bad defense and bad shot taking. Ewing would make today’s big hit that 3 every time. He ain’t closing out there, but even if he had too, he was an elite defender in his prime.
In my humble opinion, players today are trying to become too versatile. A seven footer who is around 250 lbs trying to dribble like a guard spells trouble to their legs over time. These two guys never got hurt…. What they are saying is true…. The first time I played ball after boot camp I was dead after one game.. before boot camp I would run 5+ games several times per week…. Different type of being in shape….
KG keeping it real! These dudes in the NBA are pampered!
The players today are S.O.FT.!!!! PERIOD POINT BLANK
KG is passionate during a podcast. Think about how intense he was when he actually suited up
The low-top sneaker trend in the NBA definitely is playing it's part too.
IDK about that because they use to hoop in Chuck Taylors bruh you ever worked out in those or ran miles in them? LOL shit is hectic
@@wnbafanaticforlife1They weren't doing the moves back then they do now
@@prodigy513 that doesn't mean shit they also didn't have the right nutrients and supplements back then either like they have now
Because they soft af but think they could compete with the men of the 80s 90s early 2ks. Stop it.
Damn right they can, maybe their health is down. But these guys are the most skilled now than they have ever been
@sportsgamer2342 How they going to compete against the 90’s players when they going to get injured the first time they drive down the lane.
Old dudes always yap, players from the 90s except for a elite few are trash and wouldn’t have a roster spot in today’s league, Lmaooo “the truth “ is an un athletic wing, an average at best 3pt shooter , he would barely make a roster spot today
@@sportsgamer2342they can’t compete with the older generation 😂
@@DD23769Pierce was going toe to toe with prime Lebron and he was not even in his prime. And you believe he wouldn’t make a roster spot today? He would be an MVP candidate in today’s league.
Some people are born with that, some got to work their ass off to get it.
But a few....are born like that and dedicated to the entire craft, those are the true greats.
That mental toughness, is the one thing you cant coach into someone, only help them grow it .
They also don't wear high tops anymore. Are there more ankle injuries?
Nah. Knees and back injures. The shoes top notch nowadays and this is coming from a 38 year old 2 years post op back surgery but still hooping. The shoes saving me 😂
You gotta get a good pair tho. The market flooded right now
More snapped Achilles than ever
Overtraining is a real thing. My mentor Greg Roskopf always says “recovery is the most important aspect of exercise “. Too many athletes are getting bad advice & overtraining, and most of these athletic trainers that clubs are employing frankly need to be fired.
MAT is the only thing that ever worked for me. Works with the body, not against it.
Getting hurt because of those low top shoes but that's the style now. Ever wonder why networks never mention how many more players started getting hurt in this era? They don't want to bash shoe companies
Brotha low tops came first before the highs the shoes are the big issue. It’s a combination of movement style higher pace and the increase in pylo work and not enough strength work
Yea low tops ain’t the issue. Honestly the shoes better than they ever been. I’m 38 and still hoop and these new shoes holding it down for real 😂
Been playing in lows for over 15 years. Has nothing to do with the injuries.
@@chosenone8964 you see some of the strongest guys getting hurt.. Can't say they don't do strength work
@@qthequick at what level? Idc if you're a good hooper or not but when you're up against physicality and have to use your MAXIMUM potential every other day it makes a difference.
Those damn rubber band workouts. Focus on old school lifts
Facts! Resistance bands dont get it. You have to move metal. That's part of the reason 80s, 90s, 2000s players suffered less injuries.
both are necessary for different reasons. Building muscle mass, functional strength training and mobility work are both essential for basketball
The game is faster, those legs and feet getting worn out quicker than ever before would be my guess
The game is slower
@@AmberSantana-is3dq how you figure? Almost the entire game is based on fast breaks now
@@midwestdolo818If you look highlights you could think the game is faster but the game is interrupted every minute. The game is so slow, players are chilling for long stretches.
@@AmberSantana-is3dqYou’re flat out wrong about that just check some tracking data it’s not that hard
Not only that. With spacing the way it is they cover more ground in half court sets. It’s a lot more lateral movement than the old days.
Real talk I love PP realness. He’s just a street kid hooper with money who never changed. Dudes raw as fuck with years of wisdom. He’s got a little bit of hateorade in him but that’s because he’s old school. You gotta earn it first.
Interesting point
I'm an old head but I will admit that the style of play may contribute to the injuries too. With the pace and the spacing, the defenders have more ground to cover. The closeouts and defensive recoveries has to be hard on the lower body and joints.
@@rlm78iiithats the main point the space and covering more ground.
They need LeBalcos workout program 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Correction, they need LeBillionaire's money to buy a hyperbolic air chamber.
1. Low top shoes
2. Replacing basketball games with basketball "training"
3. Shutting down instead of playing through pain.
4. Lack of halfcourt post game. All big men do now is sprint up the court for alley oops.
The rate of injury has increased 2% with a massive increase in pace, explosiveness, but player longevity is also up overall. These old heads are yapping
All this despite Doc. Mad respect.
Doc is a legend and unlike you nerds hell talk hoops with anybosy
Olm man strength is a real thing if you ever run into it. Just a different breed of men that never stopped moving/working their whole entire lives. We dont make them like that anymore and if you look around society reflects that
all time rant from kg and nothin but facts
Train more. Train hard.
They show some great play. Work hard to get into the NBA. Get drafted. Get money
Everything stops.
To stay injury free, train...
Load management in a lot of cases. Pretty hard for me to believe the league is this fragile with all modern advancements in training and fitness.
This is real
KG sound like me. Lol Paul a real one 2. Love em both. Need my cards signed. Holla. Love
@JohnnytNatural so you just go practice shooting with your stronger arms, that’s common knowledge if you play any sport
@JohnnytNatural the only reason they “made up “ that bs excuse is so air soft 7 footers like KD could play shooting guard
this clip right here puts jj and lechoke to shame!
wtf do they have to do with this????
Charmin!
Completely agree with KG and Truth
I bet a lot of people get hurt defending this new wave of super fast, shifty players with elite ball handling skills and footwork. I know De'Aaron Fox has put a few people on IR.
Or maybe the games today are more taxing on the body? with faster place and a lot of motion offensively and defensively?
They don't do traditional strength training anymore I bet. They almost certainly do highly specialized workouts/lifts that lend to the higher level of skills we see today. But KG is right there are so many guys in the league with very little definition on their bodies. The tom brady effect of being only as strong as you have to be
Players get injured more today because you have to run around a lot more in today's style of game , a powerfoward has to chase ppl around the 3 point line instead of camping out in the paint
It's the shoes
I don't know maybe you should use the off season for I don't know rest not playing every pick up game maybe they wouldn't be balding and aging early keep in shape in off season and go from there
NFL has the same problem. The only way to condition your body to pay football IS TO PLAY FOOTBALL. Reducing practices has actually increased injuries.
Massaging during a game is crazy I didn't know they did that
AAU is killing the game too…body starts breaking down by the time they reach the league
Bigger stronger faster than before
At least they're not pooping their shorts on court! 😂
"We talking bout practice, maaaan"
Paul Pierce really doesn’t have a say in this. Dude was rolled back on to court in a wheelchair… then miraculously played like nothing happened to him, and his team won
He seriously right lol! Those off/rest day make you weaker.
Because of suppliments. They have affects that we just havent discovered over a longer period of time.
Facts you can’t measure the intangibles 👑💯💯💯. Ask Brady!!!
“Not eating enough McDonald’s” ochocinco
Every single player these days should watch this.
I just watched my home team lose the playoffs because they were to sore to play.
These ol school players were steel ! These new cats are being treated like prima donnas .
I saw Kobe sitting on the bench with a iv fluids because he was sick, they were losing, he unplugged got up and took the game over and they won.
Nowadays these guys would be at home in bed with their moms taking care of them.
N these are some of the strongest fastest people on the planet making tens of millions of dollars being coddled, coming into the arena with sweatsuits n sittin on the bench during the playoffs because they’re sore .
Man you can’t hard foul no more, you can’t look sideways without getting a technical, if you bump someone it’s a foul n they are still benchwarming 😳🤦♂️
🤷♂️
Fck I had to work construction hurt every single day for half a damn century 😂
Somehow these benchwarmer have become the norm ?
practice, stretching after each workout, then masages at the end, u have to be unlucky to be injured this much
And most guys practice alone with a trainer instead with they'r teammates
Not living a strict disciplined lifestyle and the pace of the game is too fast. More time in the half court reduced injury.
They play faster, there moves aren't simple so it's weird stress on the joints, that slow post play saved a lot of people's joints. Think about this how many seasons would Ewing be hurt if he was playing like a wing Nd playing so fast?
The 90s weren’t much slower and the 80s were faster. It’s not the pace
Oh and most of these players have been training since childhood imagine how banged up their bodies once they reach the nba or any pro league in the world.
This why i played all sports soccer basketball football i only rest from from til june 😢😢😢
