  • After a pretty manic last couple of arrival days, it was finally show time.
    Friday is always a shorter show than the weekend ones but tends to feature many exciting assets in the flying display.
    This year’s Friday show featured a special opening flypast by the Red Arrows and the RAF’s latest aircraft to enter frontline service - the P-8A Poseidon MRA1. Other displays included the Austrian Typhoon and Hercules QRA demo, the Black Eagles, the Czech Air Force’s ‘Hind’ and ‘Hip’ helicopters and many others.
    We also had a few more static aircraft to arrive into the show, starting with the Dutch F-16s and an A-4 Skyhawk! (First time a Skyhawk has been to the Air Tattoo since the late ‘70s.)
    After the flying displays, further static assets joined including a Hawker Hunter, the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight’s Lansen, Viggen and Draken as well as the US Air Force’s very special E-4B Nightwatch.

    I still think those soviet era helicopters look amazingly intimidating. Having served during the Cold War and learning to identify all Warsaw Pact types. The Hind Mi 24 (V or VM I think) beast still makes the hairs on my back stand to attention every time I see one. Hip, not so much. Even though the Mi8 could pack a punch too.

      It was down as a static display but this year they’ve been very good with the statics’ arrivals.
      They’ve allowed some of them to do ‘run and breaks’ followed by low approaches/go arounds. Makes it very worthwhile as the majority of people want to see the aircraft fly! :)

    My first time 2022, having bought tickets 2019, and I thought the lack of British and American aircraft was quite noticeable considering this is the UK and it was the 75th Anniversary of US aircraft too. I only had Friday Tickets. I was so disappointed in fact, that I have already booked three days next year with the early bird prices. You come to realise as you get older that not everything just happens as you wish for but make good use of what there is and appreciate the sheer planning and effort that brings it all together. It was a remarkable day for me and was sad just to go the one day but it was that one day that makes you realise just how good it all is and the different countries' pilots and ground crew eager to answer questions and take pics with was just awesome. Thanks to them all for their efforts and all the volunteers, even the car park attendants who wanted me to almost park in someone's boot

    Thanks for uploading this. I used to go to RIAT years ago but the last time I drove I spent from 9.30am to 13.30am in the traffic jam to get in and have only been back once since and was then really disappointed with the lack of aircraft diversity - can't remember the exact year. Have to say it looks like there are a far more diverse range of aircraft now which is good to see. First went when it was at Greenham Common in 1984 and it was amazing seeing all the different types of aircraft. I'd love to see a RAF historic jet flight (like the swedish one) - how about the Lightning, Vulcan and Phantom :) I know it would never happen but wouldn't it be great.

    • @Mors_Inimicis
      @Mors_Inimicis 2 года назад

      Last show at Greenham was 1983 .
      The day is a bit of a slog and for me (another one who remembers the good old days at Greenham) the queues for the security checks are a pain. No security back in the day and nothing went wrong but then I guess the authorities could trust the inhabitants of the U.K. a lot more pre 1997
      The key nowadays is to leave for the show as early as you can or better still try and stay in accommodation not too far away.
      2022 was my first time back since 2017 as I’d grown tired of the aforementioned problems, however it’s amazing how a pandemic and having several of your favourite airshows disappear forever from the calendar can make you reassess your options and I bought my ticket with a week to go. I was certainly glad I did !

    The fact that one of the themes was the 75th Anniversary of the USAF the US contribution to the proceedings, on a US base, was absolutely piss poor. The flying display this year was enormously average and also the so-called “premium enclosures” had quite clearly undergone some cost cutting and were totally unacceptable as a “premium / luxury” experience. RIAT needs to seriously sort itself out or it is no longer worth the money at all.

    Too bad they never continued to update the Eurotrash Typhoon. Decent playform. It might have been viable as a 4th gen even today, but budget cuts and "no war" foresight kept it to a footnote in the history books.

    • @BasedF-15Pilot
      @BasedF-15Pilot 2 года назад +6

      Might prove a very bad decision. As an F-15C pilot, I found the Typhoon second only to the F-22 in raw power ability to keep up with a clean or 1-bag F-15, which translates to 2-circle fight prowess and the ability to add vertical at will. A C-model F-15 was still a little stronger and could outrun a Typhoon especially up high where we usually CAP. The Rafale was similar to a Typhoon but not nearly as powerful under G. The Rafale was more like a Growler with it's electronics package than anything else. The Typhoon is more dangerous than an F-16 or F-35 in a merge or perch or anything close bfm really. Sad to see politicians ruin things they don't understand.

    • @FuzzWoof
      @FuzzWoof 2 года назад +5

      Never continued to update it? I don't know about other services, but the RAF are still very actively updating the Typhoon. Huge pile of systems upgrades coming before 2024, and a brand new AESA radar has just been commissioned.

    • @richardwilliams6132
      @richardwilliams6132 2 года назад

      Not sure how up to speed you are. Typhoons were particularly effective against most types at "Top Gun" exercises, and other evaluation deployments.. They continue to be upgraded in the RAF with electronics, weapons, and new radar packages coming through. RAF fast jet pilot training is acknowledged as superb which helps. The next generation Tempest the proof of concept flight of which is due in 3 years will eventually supersede the Typhoon.

    • @phantomf4747
      @phantomf4747 2 года назад

      @@richardwilliams6132 While I concur they have been updated, not moving forward like say the F15 to F15E, and now F15EX is more of what I was getting at. The EF has become fodder now in this generation of fighters. While still a threat, easily rendered to clean up missions when F35 and F22 are doing their thing. Red Flag over the years has proven that. Tempest will exciting to see. Trust me, I all for our friends having killer machines!

    • @richardwilliams6132
      @richardwilliams6132 2 года назад

      @@phantomf4747 "Red Flag has proven that?" I don't think so. Even recent exercises show otherwise. The EF is more than a match for most of the aircraft it is ever likely to have to combat in the foreseeable future. Certainly, until a replacement comes on line..
      Contrary to the US pilot's comment there are plenty of RAF pilots who have flown the F15 and prefer the EF so it's a matter of choice. with certain characteristics of the EF superior still even after the F15 upgrade. If dogfighting still exists then ASEA radar and long-range missiles will determine outcomes, hypersonic or otherwise, The ability to multi-target and if necessary control drones are all in the mix. It comes down to skill and resources where the US funding outstrips all except China.
