Shipping Container Shop - Corrugated ceiling, trim and file cabinet storage

- Today I'm making some repairs and a few random modifications to the shipping container workshop since we had the hail storm back in Oct/Nov 2018. Included in this video is the replacement of the old ceiling with corrugated vinyl roofing panels, replacing all the trim and a modification to my file cabinet storage. The next change for the shop will be changing the front awning supports to steel and adding new metal roofing.
But before any of that takes place I want to get back to the Travel Trailer Project , where I will be adding a permanent coupler/hitch and adding weight distribution and sway control. Followed by the 12v wiring, and kitchenette area.
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!
Joe

Don't worry about us, we like everything you do, large and small, be sure that you put rubber or something where the electrical cord goes through the metal. I like the window, the corrugated ceiling should disperse sound quite nicely. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the repairs to the greenhouse, and I like the videos on the travel trailer.
Thank you UD! I appreciate it! and will definitely be adding something to the outlet access to keep that from getting frayed and worn... good idea thanks!
I have a 30x40 garage with an additional 400sq ft upstairs, and after my father had a stroke and passed away, I cannot bring myself to go out to there. So I'll be living vicariously through you. Great video and Great shop. 2 THUMBS UP 👍 👍.
agree........... I try my hardest to find the positive out of a negative.... a few years back, I had a major stroke....best thing that ever happened to me :) I do things a bit different now but having way more fun.........living life! loving the Good!

Stockton, California 😉🙂
Thank you Louis! You are so spot on right! We are very blessed and it certainly could have been worse. Luckily my wife and daughter were in town when it hit... and our house was damaged but stayed water tight so that was good too!
God Bless you and yours too!
joe
Nice video! for the plug, you could route out a small dado in the plywood and move it so it comes out the side then the plug isn't coming through the top and it won't be in the way of you need to use the whole top👌
hmmmm... I might just have to do that! thanks Zach!
I'm jealous you got one hell of a bankroll
Being a perfectionist. Grommet in the file cabinet top would make me happy
yep, that's a good idea :)
No comment to make just a thumbs up!
Joe, just so impressed. I am sure this would have disheartened most of us but you saw it as an opportunity. Kindest regards from over the pond.
Thank you Tony! It bummed me for sure but the process of figuring out some good to make of it is what has helped me through. Always great to hear from you Tony! Take care and don't forget to send the UK moisture out this way and I'm return our excess warmth back to you :)
So much inspiration for what I'm going to do. Thanks.
awesome to hear Ben!
Can’t get over how good that looks! Gets my brain turning about my garage. And, “Good” - I like it. 🤘🏽
Thanks Kerby! It also got my brain thinking about my garage too! btw... if you shop at costco you can find those led lights that I have in my shop for about $20 each right now... I just put them in my garage too and they are BRIGHT
homesteadonomics oh yeah! I wish I’d looked at this before I went to Costco today. But there’s also tomorrow. Those would be perfect for the garage!
When ever I think of building a workshop, yours is the one I am doing. thnx for the inspiration. P.S Ignore the thumbs down, their obviously jealous and don't have a life.
Good job. I love the ceiling.
Thank you James! me too! more than I even thought i would!
shop is looking surgical, nice work Joe.
Your shop just keeps getting better and better. Sorry you had to replace so much from the storm but it looks amazing now. Keep up the great work you are doing. I love all your idea's and methods. Thanks for explaining everything the way you do.
Bob Ferranti thank you so much bob! Thanks for sticking with me as I try to improve on my video making and project building....it’s a process but I hope to get better with each one:)
Thanks for sharing that last little bit of info. It definitely added value, perfect timing, as your first hypothetical hit home for me.
Thank you for letting me know that! I'm sorry to hear that but I hope and pray that the next one comes soon and in a manner that works out best for you! :)
Looks sharp! And fireman Joe came out again with the battery fire concern! 😁. I think the “good” way to view life’s craziness is great. I’ve found that sometimes the worst happenings turn out to lead to the best blessings. Great video!
Thank you! yes, sometimes what we learn from the low points makes for better things and more blessings in the future :)
Shop is great and looks cool. Well done.
Thank you Chris! :)
Awesome video! Exactly what I want. Goals. I have a shipping container .can’t wait to get started
Pretty slick, it looks very bright and video friendly. I can’t tell about the echo. I really like how neat and organized you keep your shop, I also applaud your approach to life and in dealing with whatever might come your way. My Grandfather used to tell me, “This life is a classroom, it is up to you as to whether you choose to learn from all of the lessons set before.” Nice video.
Thank you Raynola! I applaud your grandfather for imparting good wisdom into your upbringing as well :)
You should put up trim around the cabinets behind you on your right side you can see the gap and I think that address it up good you got a Lotta nice trim going on you shop looks great keep up the good work
yep, I will have to close that up eventually... but first I'm gonna get back to the trailer then the exterior things like the shop awning and roofing :)
Sounds good, looks great. Very comfortable place to work‼️👍👍🔨 Vinny 🇺🇸
Revision 2.0 definitely was worth the effort. Looks great!
BillyLapTop thank you billy!!
Looks great, & very organized👍
thank you Steve!
You got to be proud of yourself very neat.
Good on ya, Joe.
Steve Edwards thank you steve!
“Get up; Dust off; Reload; Recalibrate; Re-engage”. Nice job and “Good” recovery.
J Mooney thank you brother! A little bit of inspiration from you👍😉
The shop is looking GREAT! I really like the steel file cabinet hack with the hole for the power cord and plywood top.
thank you so much T455!
Dude, that is looking fiiiiine.
Thank BA!
Looks good Joe! Thanks for sharing the video.👍😎JP
thank you JP!
Your very welcome Joe! 😎
You may try a short piece of split garden hose on the charger cord to prevent it from being nicked.
yes, I need to add something to prevent it from getting cut/worn over time :)
Everything you have done has improved your shop immensely. It has the appearance of the industrial look that I love. You have a good sense of design the skill to accomplish it. Art
greetings from bali, indonesia, this changed my view of a workshop, usually a workshop is always messy, but your is like a studio
Thanks for sharing, showing how you solved and improved your shop is important knowledge considering you showed how it was damaged by weather conditions of your location.
I liked the shop before these fixes and upgrades, but man I like it even more now. The ceiling looks nice, the white trim gives the space a clean, calm feel, and the aluminum trim on the windows definitely finishes the look. Oh yeah, the addition of the wood to the top of the file cabinet is smart. Thumbs up, brother. Good.
Thank you Jess! you saw it all happen before the video too... so in part you were advising the progress :)
"won't be of interest"
Are you kidding? All of the stuff you do on here is of interest to us! That's why we follow you and look forward to the next video each time we get to the end of the last one!
All of the changes/repairs/improvements work really well...and I swear it seems like you have more space in there.
To me...the acoustics are better...less echo...the wavy ceiling looks better & sounds better.
The only thing I might have done differently would be to use "T" shaped aluminium around the window instead of "L".
It would have fully closed the transition from wall to window and widened the look of it...but then I'm weird :)
Thanks Greg! and about the trim... that is something I didn't even think about but it sure would look better and also... completely close in the gaps! But this will have to do for a while as my wife will give me that look of .... why are you redoing this (with a frown...haha)
I know that look...way too well :)
Joe. You did a good job. I like it.
Hey man, I dont know if I've seen such a well put together shop! I am so impressed! Sir, is that just a shipping container? Man well done... I could use you to truly help me set up my shop. I am having a very difficult time trying to figure out how to safely have a woodworking shop, welding shop, Blacksmiths shop, leathersmiths studio, paint and powder shop and photo studio. This is no joke... I've worked 43 years to get to the point that I can spend the rest of my life building furniture and helping other folks who aren't able to help themselves for whatever reason. In 2 years I will be able to start my dream, me Hope's...
Brady McPhail hey Brady! Thank you! Sounds like you’ve got many of the same interests as me. I’m not sure how the perfect set up would be but I’m learning too. I’d keep the blacksmithing and welding outside or to one separate end of the shop and the wood, leather and other stuff to that other side. Basically the separation in some way or another I’m thinking is the best😀👍
Awesome job! The red was nice to look at and was kinda sad to see it go, but I couldn’t see the functionality of it. The most important part of YOUR shop is YOUR happiness and work efficiency. You use it we don’t. Keep up the wonderful work and videos!
Some great idears😊👍🦘
I wish you held workshops. Watching your videos is so inspiring!
Another good thing...... more video content for your RUclips channel 😜
yes for sure!! :)
Very nice shop. 👍🏻
John Talley thank you john!
The shop looks so much brighter now. Nice! And thanks for the "good" positive talk. I had a problem with a project I was doing today and that got me down. Your "good" talk just reminded me to stay positive and something good will come out of it. Thanks. :-)
Looking Good as always!
WillTiberius thank you will!
Looking awesome! Great video as always 👍
thank you! :D
I really really like that ceiling, it reflects and deflects the light to give nice illumination. I think it would work in my daylight basement that has just tyvec at the moment. I liked the look of the shop.
There are litteraly mountains of these containers on both coasts that can be had for a song. I've seen contests for converting them from everything mobile army surgical theaters to housing for homeless and even prison modules. A work shed would be awesome. Nicely done👌
I would love to do another project with them.... I love when folks use multiple containers to make multiple levels, and interesting areas with them. Perhaps my wife will let me add to this one, eventually.....although she was pretty set on a 20' and nothing else...haha... only time will tell if she will let me ;)
Looks great Joe!
thank you willie!
Since those panels appear to be translucent, perhaps some lead strip lights behind them would be cool.
Informative video with solid tips. Thanks!
Thank you for checking it out KC! :)
I hear no echo at all. Nice video. Hugs and Prayers ya'll . Oh yeah, love the trim around the window.
Dragonflygrandma thank you DFG! Glad to hear that the sound is maybe getting better 😀👍
I hear and see you again mr hunky Carpenter/ builder with hunky voice 👍🏻👌🏻💪😂👏👏👏
haha... thank you! :) (are you sure you're not one of my coworkers messing with me? ;)
homesteadonomics just one of your loyal subscribers 👌🏻😀I wish I can do what you’re doing 👍🏻😂💪
GOOD,
HELLO, FROM CHIHUAHUA MEXICO, IM WORKING IN A FAMOUS CASINO IN LAS VEGAS NV. and I used the word PERFECT my fellow co workers ( engineers all) tells me you are to positive.
juantransportador great to hear from chihuahua 🇲🇽 😀👍
And good use of perfect too! Your coworkers may or may not agree...but all you can do it just keep powering on! 😀👍🙏
I wish my shop was that clean and organized. You do great work!
thanks Ron! but don't worry, in between videos it is NOT nearly this clean... I just clean the disaster before I turn the camera on;)
Very nice! Great job!
thanks JP!
Nice looking safety glass your using there, some safety glassea here in the philippines are so late in design and technology...good job on your ceiling 👍
Thank you Warren! I can't remember the brand of those but I like how they seal all the way around the eyes :)
Great looking shop!✌️👍🙏🏼
Looks really nice!
thank you Greg!
Great comment at the end. There is always good, we just have to find it. Nice looking shop overhaul, thanks for sharing.
Sarah Augustine thank you Sarah! I agree, sometimes it’s tough to figure out that opportunity but it’s usually there in one form or another😀
Ceiling looks good and reflects light and does not seem to produce glare. The ceiling light cords (blk) seem to jump out. It would probably bug me until i changed them out for white. Love this shop. I may have to downsize and have given consideration to an enclosed trailer. Will have to look back for the width and length of yours. Your videos are top notch for my liking.
Yes, those cords have bugged me too... I got these from costco (they are feit brand) and I just bought some new ones to replace my old flourescent ones in my garage.... and the new ones have white cords... so I might switch them at some point... but then I'd see the black cords in my garage...lol.
maybe I'll end up covering them in some sort of trim or cord wrap that blends in better :)
Thank you for the valuable advice. It reminded me of the quote "sometimes good things fall apart, so that better things can come together!" Again your work is inspiring. Your shop is now even more beautiful than before!👍👌
A truly amazing shop! And we all saw the look on face when standing there and thinking.... how can improve, what can add to make life better... etc. Def an area and a project to be proud of. Keep up the GREAT work.
Greg Wade thank you Greg! It definitely is becoming a great space for me to just think and tinker! Loving it! 😀👍
@@homesteadonomics That's all that matters, enjoy that great space and keep on sharing when you can.
All your improvements look great. Such a cool space. Love the philosophy, too. Never discount how simple or routine the projects seem. Make the videos and I can assure you there are plenty of viewers that are benefiting, as everyone is in different stages of learning. Thanks and have a great weekend.
Thank you Torin! Yes, it is becoming a great place for me to think about projects and just start making and creating... I love being in it just tinkering on things too! And also, I'm glad to hear that about everyone learning from various things too! I remember watching a guy do drywall and he was saying that it wasn't rocket science when he was adding mud to a joint... and I remember thinking, yep not rocket science, but I hadn't done that yet and I was in totally learning phase from something that was probably very mundane to him... so yes, that was a perfect point you just made :)
Wonderful great idea for power tool storage! Great shop! Thank you for taking the time do these videos!
wow! I now have a new goal to add to the list! Shipping container shop! Love it!
Awesome shop Joe! Good use of space, light and tool placement! Can't wait to see the upcoming projects coming out of here!
Awesome Selection! Thanks for sharing these beautiful designs.
Great shop, great video, you are always calm, always positive. Love your work and videos. 👍
Good! you did an awesome job ...thanks for sharing!
Amazing work shop! Great job. 👍🏻
I'm in the process of purchasing my second container 40 ft long each and attaching with trusses 9 trusses add a roof and I got a place to park vehicles inside pour a concrete floor and concrete ramps or drive lawn equipment in the one and lock tools in the other . With proper anchor should be a tornado shelter as well
The shop is looking great Joe!! I loved the new top for the cabinet!! So simple but it for sure will make a huge difference!!
Thanks for sharing!!
I really like the repairs and updates. Even the mundane can be interesting if it is something that you’re excited about. I have a small work shop and watching your videos always make me think about improvements. I think life is to short to go through complaining... nothing is wrong with GOOD!. There are always times and places to voice your opinions but just being negative to be negative is counterproductive. I enjoy your videos because you are positive and thanks again for sharing. Have a great day!
I like the new work top on the file cabinet, but I do see an issue with it. You were talking about how it can protect your tools and such from saw dust and now there's a hole right on top. Maybe you could consider getting a sacrificial extension cord and cutting 3 feet off the end. Have it plug in just like the battery charger, but run it through a grommet that you can seal with black RTV, and on the female end put it in a metal box with a house hold plug in it. Kind of like a contractors extension cord.
Then you have the same functionality as now, except with a sealed up hole on top, and 2 plugs in the drawer instead of one.
I enjoy watching all your videos. I like watching you do repairs and building anything!
I like the update. Extreme Ownership is a great book!
You did Good!
thank you Mike!
Looking very nice.
Looks awesome
thank you JL's!
Joe, nice looking updates. I personally like the white trim better. Let's the eye focus on other items and not the wood colored trim. I think it makes the wood cabinets contrast better. But hey...it's just trim...lol. The shop as a whole looks great. I have a similar sized shop but yours has ten times the amount of brightness. Thanks for mentioning Jacko. I found him on RUclips and he has some good vids.
Only problem with that file cabinet is, it's a few inches higher than your other work surfaces. It's always easier when you can make all of your work surfaces the same height, but since it's a good cabinet, I guess that's not really an issue.
The window trim looks good.
I definitely heard a lot more echo during your closing than I have ever heard when you film in the shop. Must be the new ceiling panels. Some acoustic panels around the ceiling might help.
I'm hoping once I get some of the hand tool storage on the walls it will break it up a bit... fingers crossed :)
Great shop and the repairs/upgrades look great. I wish I had more property to get a shipping container shop of my own.
Little Blessings in disguise. Great Job with the repairs!
96ChevyDually6.5L yes they are, aren’t they!! 😀👍
I really enjoyed watching your video. Thanks for posting.
Cool shop!
Very nice. Crisp, clean, and organized.
Grevlain thank you grevlain!
Great job!
Man that shop is looking great now! Great stuff! Cheers my friend!
Looks really good Joe. It takes time and patience, but the payoff is so well-worth-it. Setbacks like storms can be such a useful way we can re-examine things and make them even better.
Thanks Tania! Yes, the storm made me kinda reevaluate several things and now I'm just trying to improve upon what I can, deal with what I can't and figure out the way forward for the rest :)
So gratifying to watch you come back from such a big setback. Shop looks fantastic!
Bonnie Barber thank you Bonnie! 😀🙏
Well I will copy your new friend and all I can say is good. Awesome person. Nice shop.
Larry Grubbs thank you Larry! 🙏😀
The shop is coming along nicely. 😀 That must have been a heckuva hail storm!
Patrick Parson Workshop thank you Patrick! It sure was😅
I love the improvements, Joe. I usually find fault in most of my projects, but rarely go back and make the changes unless there is a failure or needed intervention. I try to look at those as opportunities for improvement. Keep on inspiring!
Mark, Cedar Falls Farm, Fountain Inn, SC
I love the new look. I think the corrugations help reduce the echo and I like the new white trim better. The aluminum angle around the window is nice, too. I originally found your channel when I searched RUclips for "shipping container shop". I am really impressed with your shop and how you have it laid out. I have also watched a lot of your other videos which led me to rainwater harvesting by Handeeman and his solar installation which led me to the Green Dream Project. I'm making progress on my wife's studio and when that is done I can move all of her stuff out of the container and maybe start on my shop. Keep the videos coming, I love all the projects, big and small.
RedHotFiat thank you RHF! Glad you have stayed after seeing some of my earlier videos too....haha...I went through a phase of videos where I spoken way to highly and stood way to close to the camera. Makes me cringe now when I see them😬....😂👍
It does look nicer with what you used. Keep up the good work. Simple is great.
Mike Morris thank you mike! I’m really enjoying this space more and more! 😀👍
Great job 👍🏼
A good start to the new year with great Improvements! Way to make some good lemonade!! 😉 👍🏼
Thank you Maria! Loving the new logo!!!
