Shipping Container Shop - Corrugated ceiling, trim and file cabinet storage

  • Today I'm making some repairs and a few random modifications to the shipping container workshop since we had the hail storm back in Oct/Nov 2018. Included in this video is the replacement of the old ceiling with corrugated vinyl roofing panels, replacing all the trim and a modification to my file cabinet storage. The next change for the shop will be changing the front awning supports to steel and adding new metal roofing.
    But before any of that takes place I want to get back to the Travel Trailer Project , where I will be adding a permanent coupler/hitch and adding weight distribution and sway control. Followed by the 12v wiring, and kitchenette area.
    Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!
    Joe

    Don't worry about us, we like everything you do, large and small, be sure that you put rubber or something where the electrical cord goes through the metal. I like the window, the corrugated ceiling should disperse sound quite nicely. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the repairs to the greenhouse, and I like the videos on the travel trailer.

    Nice video! for the plug, you could route out a small dado in the plywood and move it so it comes out the side then the plug isn't coming through the top and it won't be in the way of you need to use the whole top👌

    I liked the shop before these fixes and upgrades, but man I like it even more now. The ceiling looks nice, the white trim gives the space a clean, calm feel, and the aluminum trim on the windows definitely finishes the look. Oh yeah, the addition of the wood to the top of the file cabinet is smart. Thumbs up, brother. Good.

    All of the changes/repairs/improvements work really well...and I swear it seems like you have more space in there.
    To me...the acoustics are better...less echo...the wavy ceiling looks better & sounds better.
    The only thing I might have done differently would be to use "T" shaped aluminium around the window instead of "L".
    It would have fully closed the transition from wall to window and widened the look of it...but then I'm weird :)

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Greg! and about the trim... that is something I didn't even think about but it sure would look better and also... completely close in the gaps! But this will have to do for a while as my wife will give me that look of .... why are you redoing this (with a frown...haha)

    Hey man, I dont know if I've seen such a well put together shop! I am so impressed! Sir, is that just a shipping container? Man well done... I could use you to truly help me set up my shop. I am having a very difficult time trying to figure out how to safely have a woodworking shop, welding shop, Blacksmiths shop, leathersmiths studio, paint and powder shop and photo studio. This is no joke... I've worked 43 years to get to the point that I can spend the rest of my life building furniture and helping other folks who aren't able to help themselves for whatever reason. In 2 years I will be able to start my dream, me Hope's...

      Brady McPhail hey Brady! Thank you! Sounds like you’ve got many of the same interests as me. I’m not sure how the perfect set up would be but I’m learning too. I’d keep the blacksmithing and welding outside or to one separate end of the shop and the wood, leather and other stuff to that other side. Basically the separation in some way or another I’m thinking is the best😀👍

    Ceiling looks good and reflects light and does not seem to produce glare. The ceiling light cords (blk) seem to jump out. It would probably bug me until i changed them out for white. Love this shop. I may have to downsize and have given consideration to an enclosed trailer. Will have to look back for the width and length of yours. Your videos are top notch for my liking.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  5 лет назад

      Yes, those cords have bugged me too... I got these from costco (they are feit brand) and I just bought some new ones to replace my old flourescent ones in my garage.... and the new ones have white cords... so I might switch them at some point... but then I'd see the black cords in my garage...lol.
      maybe I'll end up covering them in some sort of trim or cord wrap that blends in better :)

And also, I'm glad to hear that about everyone learning from various things too! I remember watching a guy do drywall and he was saying that it wasn't rocket science when he was adding mud to a joint... and I remember thinking, yep not rocket science, but I hadn't done that yet and I was in totally learning phase from something that was probably very mundane to him... so yes, that was a perfect point you just made :)

I have a small work shop and watching your videos always make me think about improvements. I think life is to short to go through complaining... nothing is wrong with GOOD!. Have a great day!

  • @MStrickkk
    @MStrickkk 5 лет назад

    I like the new work top on the file cabinet, but I do see an issue with it. You were talking about how it can protect your tools and such from saw dust and now there's a hole right on top. Maybe you could consider getting a sacrificial extension cord and cutting 3 feet off the end. Have it plug in just like the battery charger, but run it through a grommet that you can seal with black RTV, and on the female end put it in a metal box with a house hold plug in it. Kind of like a contractors extension cord.
    Then you have the same functionality as now, except with a sealed up hole on top, and 2 plugs in the drawer instead of one.

    Joe, nice looking updates. I personally like the white trim better. Let's the eye focus on other items and not the wood colored trim. I think it makes the wood cabinets contrast better. But hey...it's just trim...lol. The shop as a whole looks great. I have a similar sized shop but yours has ten times the amount of brightness. Thanks for mentioning Jacko. I found him on RUclips and he has some good vids.

    Only problem with that file cabinet is, it's a few inches higher than your other work surfaces. It's always easier when you can make all of your work surfaces the same height, but since it's a good cabinet, I guess that's not really an issue.
    The window trim looks good.
    I definitely heard a lot more echo during your closing than I have ever heard when you film in the shop. Must be the new ceiling panels. Some acoustic panels around the ceiling might help.

      I'm hoping once I get some of the hand tool storage on the walls it will break it up a bit... fingers crossed :)

    Great shop and the repairs/upgrades look great. I wish I had more property to get a shipping container shop of my own.

    Looks really good Joe. It takes time and patience, but the payoff is so well-worth-it. Setbacks like storms can be such a useful way we can re-examine things and make them even better.

      Thanks Tania! Yes, the storm made me kinda reevaluate several things and now I'm just trying to improve upon what I can, deal with what I can't and figure out the way forward for the rest :)

    I love the improvements, Joe. I usually find fault in most of my projects, but rarely go back and make the changes unless there is a failure or needed intervention. I try to look at those as opportunities for improvement. Keep on inspiring!

    I love the new look. I think the corrugations help reduce the echo and I like the new white trim better. The aluminum angle around the window is nice, too. I originally found your channel when I searched RUclips for "shipping container shop". I am really impressed with your shop and how you have it laid out. I have also watched a lot of your other videos which led me to rainwater harvesting by Handeeman and his solar installation which led me to the Green Dream Project. I'm making progress on my wife's studio and when that is done I can move all of her stuff out of the container and maybe start on my shop. Keep the videos coming, I love all the projects, big and small.

      RedHotFiat thank you RHF! Glad you have stayed after seeing some of my earlier videos too....haha...I went through a phase of videos where I spoken way to highly and stood way to close to the camera. Makes me cringe now when I see them😬....😂👍
