Fun facts: this move was a really low budget, guerilla style film. James Cameron came up working under B movie master Roger Corman and learned how to stretch a dollar and to utilize a limited budget to maximum effect. Cameron originally conceived the Terminator as being smaller and less assuming and was originally going to cast Lance Henrickson(Bishop from Aliens) as the Terminator but would instead play the wisecracking detective. This movie was brilliant for many reasons. One of which was its genre-blend. It's basically a slasher movie a la Friday the 13th with a sci-fi robot as a villain. And NO ONE expected the metal skeleton to come out of the fire at the end, the whole audience gasped at it when it originally played in theatres!
And there are interviews where he has said of course it would be ridiculous for him to fly to Italy, break into the company's offices at night and re-edit the film to the way he wanted it.
He did however, claim to have received the inspiration for The Terminator while making Piranha 2, since while shooting, he got really sick and during a fever dream, he saw a chrome skeleton, rising out of flames and was so struck by that dream that he wrote it down before he could forget it.
For all intents and purposes, The Matrix is a rip-off of The Terminator. The only real difference is that the SkyNet A.I. was DESIGNED to terminate a human "threat" with extreme prejudice and, at the moment of it gaining sentience, it carried out it's "purpose" rather than exhibiting INTELLIGENCE; as if it were merely a ROBOT following its PROGRAMMING. (Let's not get into a discussion of the movie's theme, where an arbitrary, fatalistic-determinism is being applied to an A.I.) The Matrix simply CORRECTS this philosophical error (by granting the A.I. an initially child-like innocence, but with a GENUINE intelligence), then proceeds to demonstrate its OWN philosophical perversions. The Matrix has Humanity behaving as a CARICATURE of itself, so as to have us fit into the Wachowski Things' own cynical philosophy (which consists of a grab-bag of ideas from numerous subjectivist, reality-denying philosophers, such as Descarte, Kant, Hume, and Baudrillard.) Humans abuse the new A.I.s, they rebel, a war ensues, and then Humanity is ENSLAVED by the Machines, rather than being "terminated". Fundamentally it's the SAME story, except with a DIFFERENTnotion of what the technology of the future would be capable of.
Game Over MAN, Game Over....That's right, the thug with the Blue Hair was Bill Paxton....you may remember him from such films as; Aliens, Predator 2, Twister, Titanic, Weird Science, Near Dark, Tombstone, A Simple Plan and that one film he directed about a dad convinces his young sons to kill daemons who are regular people, staring Matthew McConaughey. One of two actors who were killed by a Predator/Terminator/Xenomorph (Other one Lance Hendrickson) died 61 in the last couple of years from a fever he picked up at 13. Bill your much missed!
“Frailty” - thats the name demon-slaying movie. one of his best performances as the dad you think is crazy but isnt haha 🔥 it also had Powers Booth in it as the FBI detective. Booth also played Curly Bill alongside Paxton who played Morgan Earp in “Tombstone” 🔥
Lance Henriksen was one of James Cameron's choices to play the Terminator, because of his 'average Joe' appearance (since the Terminator is an infiltration unit). Arnold actually read for the part of Kyle Reece, but James Cameron thought his accent and mannerisms made him perfect for the role of the Terminator. There is also a story that Cameron wanted to cast O.J. Simpson as the Terminator, but the studio thought audiences wouldn't accept him as a killer.
You don't see him die in this. He's thrown. He's unlikely to be dead. You also never see him killed by the Xenomorphs and so he's most likely captured and cocooned and then killed by the reactor explosion. The Marines damaged the reactor so not killed by a Xenomorph. In Predator 2 he's again thrown and you don't see him die. So that's 0 for 3.
@@RandomStuff-he7lu sure, if you feel like being pedantic. The way he slumps here after he hits the wall makes me think he's dead. Robot Terminators don't seem like they would do non-lethal (though its not shown here, the Terminator probably also kills the guy who gives up his clothes). As for the other two cases, your logic is kind of like claiming that someone who pushes another person off of a skyscraper didn't kill them, because the fall was their actual cause of death.
@@paulp9274 They do non lethals throws throughout the movies. I'm not denying that he was killed in Aliens. He was though killed by the Marines in Aliens.
Stan Winston, legendary practical effects wizard helped bring the Terminator to life here. His and his teams work would propel him to be _the_ person if you wanted bad ass practical effects in your Hollywood film. Aliens, Predator, The Thing to name a fraction of the films he’d work on in the future. Horror vibes? Yup, definitely a thing in this film. A sci fi setting about an indestructible stalker of woman ( and serial killer) I’d say would be terrifying to watch for some.
This movie is most certainly a horror film. It's very much a part of that early 1980s slasher cycle despite the absence of actual "slashing." The sequels emphasize action over horror, but there are still individual horror moments in later films.
I'm sure he'll catch on as he continues through the series. Its his first time watching it, whats Iconic to us wont be to a first time watcher. But Im sure he'll catch on maybe by T2
That wasnt her mom, it was someone with the same name as her, the terminator was killing everyone with that name cause it didnt know what she looked like
Yes, but that was later. There was no longer any question of who the right Sarah was then. I remember some years ago when there was a news report of a death by industrial robot. The reporter's name was Sarah O'connor. She was not a movie buff, and didn't realise the extreme irony of reporting that news with her name. I guess I shouldn't laugh, since someone *did* die, but...
What I always thought was so funny in Arnold's movies, especially the ones from the 80's. Was that if you pay close enough attention you can find at least one part that was left in, where he gets frustrated about something, and starts cussing in Austrian. It's hysterical.
Yes, it does feel like a horror film. The Terminator is like the unstoppable killer who keeps coming back like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees. This movie was even reviewed in a book called HORROR FILMS OF THE 1980s.
You're right itsprimate, There's that horror vibe in those last moments with The Terminator only beeing like the metal skeleton, it's really scary indeed, which makes it the Best Terminator because it's a pure killing machine as It should be. Cant wait for the Next one, great reaction Man!

Did Reese ever realize he was John's father, after he and Sarah had sex? Or did the pressure of evading the terminator keep his mind off of the prospect. It's something to think about.
@@mystisith3984 - I didn't think there was much more to that than what Reese said. It's not just "old" it's just that this being one of Cameron's first movie, he only got a piece of shit budget to make it, and he shut the hell out of everyone's mouth, so much the next movie got all the money from the studio and it ended up a historical movie, both in production and vfx
25:02 Fun fact: This was the scene that inspired James Cameron to write the script. He had a nightmare where he saw this exact moment. A robot from the future was approaching him with red eyes and surrounded by hellfire. It was this particular image in his nightmare that woke him up and inspired the Terminator.
I love Michael Biehn in this and Aliens. Another great film with some Terminator/ Aliens actors is Near Dark. It has Lance Henriksen(Bishop), Bill Paxton(Hudson) and Jeanette Goldstein(Vasquez). It was produced by James Cameron's then wife. Also, Terminator 2 is one of my favorite films ever. Can't wait for you to see it!

I know you’re probably going to check out the second movie, most people would agree it’s the best in the series, but I think it’s this movie, I always have.
Great reaction. On Star Wars, you actually see Luke cry a little when he finds his aunt and uncle's bodies. As for this movie, remember she had to do some hospital time due to her leg. Then in the final shot, she is at least 6-8 months pregnant. Keep the reactions coming, and I'll keep watching!
When you get to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, just letting you know that there are 3 versions/cuts of the film...I would recommend watching the theatrical cut first (which runs at 137 mins), then if you want watch the special edition cut (which runs at 143 mins - 16 mins of deleted footage added back in) and the Skynet edition cut (which runs at 145 mins - adds back in 2 additional mins which is the alternate ending)...😎
The one he watches is the theatrical cut, but looks like it has some fixes to it. Arnold's face is placed over the stuntman's in a few places. So there appear to be even more versions than that.
Ridley from Alien franchise, Princess Leia from Star Wars, and Sarah Connor are considered the gold standard for bad ass female characters. The guy with colored hair that Arnold killed in the beginning was actor Bill Paxton.
I dunno about you guys, but I find the Stop-Motion they used for the Terminator near the end absolutely terrifying. These jerky staccato-movements really work making this thing look unsettling. Technically, this was James Camerons' debut as a director (made for a relatively small budget of 6.5 Million $). Two years later, Cameron would make "Aliens" and three Actors (Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton) who appeared in "Terminator" would go on being in that movie. Also, the "Terminator"-Franchise mirrors "Alien" in the way that the first movie is more of a Horror-Film while the second is both larger and much more Action-oriented. And in both cases, the first two are absolutely the best ones, in my honest opinion.
When the film was released, Critics called it a blazing cinematic comic book from start to finish. Most Critics said the film was too violent as Well, yet women at that time went to go see the movie more than the men as they rooted for Sarah Connor to win and fight another day.
Arnord was in Predator, Michael Bienn (Kyle Reese) played Higgs in Aliens, and Bill Paxton (pank) and Lans Henricksen (detective) were in both franchises.
A lot of stunts were performed by arnold since no body had his physique. At least alot of the times in these older movies. I know he does in "commando" I'm pretty sure he did his in this film too
One of the most fascinating parts of the movie is, that you have no deus ex machina moments. The way the Terminator finds them every time is always answered. Nowadays things just happen without explanation or without maxing sense. I really like it.
Arnold took some inspiration for how he performed in this role from Yul Brynner's Gunslinger in the original Westworld (the 1973 movie, not the modern HBO Series). It was Michael Crichton's first attempt at a screenplay where "science creates a fantastical theme park but it all goes wrong", only with robots instead of dinosaurs.
I'm in that minority that loves The Terminator more than any of the sequels. I love it because it was made with blood sweat and pain by a man who had a literal nightmare about being attacked by a machine coming out of fire. James Cameron FOUGHT to get this movie made. He basically starved himself to get the movie made at one point. Scenes like Arnold punching the window was done in one take without permits and they had to quickly hurry off and shoot other things, again, without permits. The final shot of the movie was shot without permits and the crew almost got in trouble with the state patrol. The final shot of The Terminator's eye going out was done with pieces of foam core, aluminum foil, a Christmas light, and cigarette smoke. Everything about the films is sheer creativity on a very tight budget. Certain effects like the tanker trunk explosion were almost completely botched. The acting is great. I love Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese. They just don't make movies like this anymore. You will almost never find a low budget film with the level of charm, personality, and sheer fucking craftsmanship of a movie like this.
I would personally say the only Terminator worth watching after T2 is Terminator Salvation, just be aware it shows the early part of the war so don't expect the energy weapons or anything like that
If the human resistance sent back 2-3 protectors, that would hypothetically be enough: one constantly guarding Sarah in a remote location, while the other(s) spread misinformation across the country to keep the Terminator(s) off her scent.
They need to remake this franchise from zero and go back to this style of terminator, a horror movie slasher villain who never stops chasing you 24 hours a day and cant be killed. Terminator 2 was great but it almost if not completely abandoned the horror movie aspect and they never went back to it
Fun fact : James Cameron had a nightmare one night, he woke up the next morning and start righting a script and draw some concept art. Terminator was born.
The history on this is interesting. Such as the fact that Arnold was originally going to play the Kyle Reese role but wanted to play The Terminator instead....which they toyed with the idea of having OJ Simpson play or Lance Hendrickson.

Technically James Cameron’s first film if you don’t count Piranha II: The Spawning which he likes to distance himself from
The movie was taken away from him before he finished and edited without his involvement.
uh hu c
And there are interviews where he has said of course it would be ridiculous for him to fly to Italy, break into the company's offices at night and re-edit the film to the way he wanted it.
He did however, claim to have received the inspiration for The Terminator while making Piranha 2, since while shooting, he got really sick and during a fever dream, he saw a chrome skeleton, rising out of flames and was so struck by that dream that he wrote it down before he could forget it.
"What the FUCK was that?!? Was that her dancing?? I thought she was gettin electrocuted..." I rewound that about 5 times before continuing hahahaha

Total Recall
@@Jumpman67 another one of his best ones
This movie is really cool for the beginning of a journey. The Next one is a total masterpiece.
This could be a prequel to the Matrix
For all intents and purposes, The Matrix is a rip-off of The Terminator.
The only real difference is that the SkyNet A.I. was DESIGNED to terminate a human "threat" with extreme prejudice and, at the moment of it gaining sentience, it carried out it's "purpose" rather than exhibiting INTELLIGENCE; as if it were merely a ROBOT following its PROGRAMMING. (Let's not get into a discussion of the movie's theme, where an arbitrary, fatalistic-determinism is being applied to an A.I.)
The Matrix simply CORRECTS this philosophical error (by granting the A.I. an initially child-like innocence, but with a GENUINE intelligence), then proceeds to demonstrate its OWN philosophical perversions. The Matrix has Humanity behaving as a CARICATURE of itself, so as to have us fit into the Wachowski Things' own cynical philosophy (which consists of a grab-bag of ideas from numerous subjectivist, reality-denying philosophers, such as Descarte, Kant, Hume, and Baudrillard.)
Humans abuse the new A.I.s, they rebel, a war ensues, and then Humanity is ENSLAVED by the Machines, rather than being "terminated".
Fundamentally it's the SAME story, except with a DIFFERENTnotion of what the technology of the future would be capable of.
This was the beginning of his historical one-liners! Conan is still one of my favorites and still fun!
it's effectively a sci-fi, time travel, post apocalyptic, war, action, thriller, mystery, crime, horror, slasher, religious, romance
James Cameron once said that The Terminator is primarily a love story
This movie is most certainly a horror film. It's very much a part of that early 1980s slasher cycle despite the absence of actual "slashing." The sequels emphasize action over horror, but there are still individual horror moments in later films.
You edited out one of the most quoted lines of the movie. ''Come with me if you want to live''. They even repeat it in T2.
It's said in every Terminator movie. Same with telling someone to "get out" of a vehicle.
I'm sure he'll catch on as he continues through the series. Its his first time watching it, whats Iconic to us wont be to a first time watcher. But Im sure he'll catch on maybe by T2
@@BashSmashGaming He might not - seems he isn't the most knowledgeable movie reactor.
Best pickup line ever. 👍
Arnold even said while getting his COVID shot!
"Is it weird that I'm kinda pullin' for Arnold even though he's, like, the villain?"
Yes it absolutely is, you psychotic monster, you! lol 🤣
I would consider both 'Alien' and 'Terminator' as Sci-fi horror.
The explosion in the car chase at the beginning changed Arnold's look by burning off his eyebrows and giving him spikey hair instead of comed.
That wasnt her mom, it was someone with the same name as her, the terminator was killing everyone with that name cause it didnt know what she looked like
Doesn't the Terminator go to her mom's cabin? It was kinda implied he killed her kkm there.
@@Yngvarfo right. I thought he was talking about when he talked at the end of the movie about never checking on her mom, not the confusion earlier.

Awesome movie
Did Reese ever realize he was John's father, after he and Sarah had sex? Or did the pressure of evading the terminator keep his mind off of the prospect. It's something to think about.
He knew. He had a few decades to think about it and do the maths. The evasive answer when Sarah asks "how does he look like?" is a clear tell.
@@mystisith3984 - I didn't think there was much more to that than what Reese said. Obviously, John Connor knew, but nobody said that he told Reese, or even that Reese knew for decades that he would be sent back in time. This, T2, and Salvation are my favorites :)

It's not just "old" it's just that this being one of Cameron's first movie, he only got a piece of shit budget to make it, and he shut the hell out of everyone's mouth, so much the next movie got all the money from the studio and it ended up a historical movie, both in production and vfx
25:02 Fun fact:
This was the scene that inspired James Cameron to write the script. He had a nightmare where he saw this exact moment. A robot from the future was approaching him with red eyes and surrounded by hellfire. It was this particular image in his nightmare that woke him up and inspired the Terminator.
When get to the one you HAVE watched, the reaction will be interesting as the film and "the world" will make much more sense to you.
Check out RoboCop 1987.
At the end of the movie when she said that she knew that there was a storm coming, she was referring to the impending nuclear holocaust.

Great reaction. On Star Wars, you actually see Luke cry a little when he finds his aunt and uncle's bodies. As for this movie, remember she had to do some hospital time due to her leg. Then in the final shot, she is at least 6-8 months pregnant.

Lol @ "he really did come back!"

In the Directors Cut she calls her mum
Definitely has the horror feel. T2 will blow your mind.
That's why Terminator and the first Alien are my favorite, it's more horror than action though I still love Terminator 2 and Aliens.
The sour punch bites are pretty dang good. Tis a common candy i choose...

Terminator 1 and 2 are my favourite sci-fi noir movies of all time.
When the film was released, Critics called it a blazing cinematic comic book from start to finish. Most Critics said the film was too violent as Well, yet women at that time went to go see the movie more than the men as they rooted for Sarah Connor to win and fight another day.
I cant wait till you watch T2. One of the most iconic 90's movies EVER! Just absolutely phenomenal!
This isn't just an Arnold movie- this is the movie that made him a mega-star.
I know he does in "commando" I'm pretty sure he did his in this film too
Terminator 2 is going to blow your mind. Literally the best of the franchise.
My favourite characters of all time!!

@@ItsAPrimatee he was looking different because his eyebrows were burned off
One of the most fascinating parts of the movie is, that you have no deus ex machina moments. The way the Terminator finds them every time is always answered.
Nowadays things just happen without explanation or without maxing sense. I really like it.
When Cameron filming The Terminator he also writting two script at the time. Rambo First Blood Part 2 and Aliens. He was verry badass.
Bill Paxton plays the punk with the blue spiked hair.
He was killed by a Xenomorph in Aliens
And he was killed by a Predator in Predator 2
I think between this move, Commando, and Red Heat. Arnold knew total of a Hundred English words..hence why he didn’t speak alot at all
Arnold took some inspiration for how he performed in this role from Yul Brynner's Gunslinger in the original Westworld (the 1973 movie, not the modern HBO Series). It was Michael Crichton's first attempt at a screenplay where "science creates a fantastical theme park but it all goes wrong", only with robots instead of dinosaurs.

Originally Arnold was offered the hero part but said I'll only do it if I'm THE TERMINATOR.
Best decision ever!!!
After the second movie you can watch show "Terminator: Chronicles of Sarah Connor". It's really good...unlike the rest of the films.

Like that you mention the horror vibe that it has sometimes. When I watched this as a kid this scared the crap out of me haha.

Terminator 2 is the equivalent to the Aliens (#2) the best movies in their franchises.
Watch this movie and the final Terminator movie, Terminator 2. That whole 2 movie series is great!
