The chevy situation i feel is a perfect example of how companies can only think short term due to shareholders. Shareholders demand more money, chevy sells data to get more money, and i would hope because of this people stop buying chevys, which means theyll make less money.

State Farm has a “Drive Safe and Save” program than can get you a discount on your rate based on your performance, but one of the criteria is good braking. I don’t drive crazy and can say I’ve never been in an accident, but I fail their braking criteria almost every time I drive. They say if you brake hard enough to make things in your car move, you’re braking too hard. But that never happens. It’s a BS scam. Same for turning, and accelerating. I have a 150 HP car. I’m not accelerating too fast because I physically can’t.
When my kids ask me why people are driving too fast or driving crazy in general, I tell them that the driver has diarrhea and needs to get to the bathroom ASAP.

Yes, in California there has been an increase in fast drivers in the right lane. Love to drive fast, but if I'm in my Prius, I am straight chillin' and in the Bay Area, we chill and where can chill if the right lane rolls faster than the far left. Style driving or swerving is another thing. The right lane is the fastest land in the Bay Area.

They’re taking out the MGU-H which should do more for sound since before that was the component using up all the residual combustion in the engine further dulling the sound
I opted in to having my insurance track my driving because I know I'm a safe driver, saves me 30% off what was already amazing rates on my car. So I don't disagree with the concept at large but to keep the consumer in the dark and do it essentially without their consent (they weren't informed that they could deactivate this to avoid their data being sold) seems criminal at worst, and super shady at best.
To me, as a consumer, it does make sense for people who drive safely to be eligible for a discount, and people who drive more recklessly to not be eligible for a discount, but they shouldn't have their rates raised unless they have actual claims from accidents they were found at fault.

Nope there is no grounds that an entity can force a contract onto another with only an opt out option for that individual. Any contract has to be presented to the other party with the option to accept/deny the contract. Any type of we're doing XYZ and you have to opt out if you don't accept is not a valid contract nor legally valid. Data theft, unlawful investigation, personal privacy breach, extortion, etc. there are many illegal aspects to these. Hell you could say any company that does stuff like this is using dark patterns which is also illegal. At least relative the to the U.S.

Im that guy who has to work on junk in a dirt driveway.(lost house after pandemic)I work a crappy walmart job for 16 bucks an hour after 15 years of service and going from nobody to boss and now back to nobody again. I have a dakota rt with a blown trans that i have no idea how to pay for. At least James has a media empire behind him lol. Mr Jesse Wood and 9 years of donut service is commendable . Makes you think how much data you leave behind when you don't reset your modern car's entertainment system when you sell it. I wonder if insurance companies get the same data from Tiktok app as from GM. Phones have accelerometers etc. too and Tiktok (and social media in general) is literally data-harvesting phones out there.

On the topic of data collection by auto manufactures, I can speak to one use of this. All manufacturers collect data from your vehicle (Toyota, Ford, Kia/Hyundai, and GM etc.) and this applies to cars older than you think. My 2014 Ford can even track and send this data using Bluetooth. An application for this is in transportation planning where you can see speeds, flow, volume, etc. and get that information from third parties to use in improving roadways.

I've got cars from the 50s to the 90s and I'll never own anything newer than me, and I was born in 01. I know they'll never rat me out and companies can't shut them down or take away options without my consent. I don't know why people still buy this junk but I think it's down to just not being informed about what you're spending 60k on

If a man drives 10 mph over it’s reckless but if it’s 10 under it’s no big deal even though both disturb the slow of traffic and should be treated the same. I believe in Time and Place soeeding. Meaning don’t do it in an unsafe manner. But going under the speed limit creates safety issues just as much. Plus it’s a lot more selfish to go 10 under in a two lane road than 10 over.
