    Autotune is definitely still around, as a tool. You hear it everywhere. They just happen not to use the intentionally crazy settings for the effect. And as for T-pain being the one who ruined things, it's really Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak that made that genre a fully realized thing.
    Also why isn't there an old picture of the NYC street grid? It's not a genuine Cheddar video without it

    • @Sprchkn
      @Sprchkn 4 года назад +2

      For sure, and it's hardly imperceptible on many tracks. It's particularly terrible on musical sitcoms. I like the way musicians have overtly used autotune in their songs. However, where it's used to excess the music falls flat. For example, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is great with his characteristic imperfect voice (even if I think one of the covers is better). An autotuned version would be a travesty, which is the way I feel about many a modern song.

    • @Official_KC
      @Official_KC 4 года назад +4

      @@Sprchkn I feel the same, exactly. I feel like a lot of popular music is just too polished. I mean go listen to Bob Dylan's electric trilogy. The flaws are what make the performances great. They were all done live in one take as well, usually. I mean something like Visions of Johanna is just amazing, flaws and all. They add to it.
      With digital recording, a lot of producers use the same tools, the same settings, everything. Its like those action films with too much CGI. It all just turns into mush

    • @Official_KC
      @Official_KC 4 года назад

      @Austin Martín Hernández I don't see what a certain genre of music has to do with what I said. Seems like you just wanted to talk about how you're a classical musician. But regardless, I am a musician. I think when certain musicians obsess over exact performances, they often lose out on creativity. For another example, when someone does this really intricate solo, perfectly duplicating the song they're performing, all I can think is "Cool. Now lets hear you write some songs"
      Even classical musicians (I'm talking about the 1700s-early 1900s) would add "imperfections" to make things more interesting. I mean go listen to Debussy playing his own music, with piano rolls. It's quite different than those playing his sheet music and try to "perfect" it. Having everything as quarter notes would be boring as hell. And that's my point.

    Autotune seems like it's a tool that's best used selectively, or in places where it fits the overall motif of the work/genre. It worked in Cher's song because it was used sparingly, more as an effect than anything else, to draw attention to the key line of the song. In Blue by Eifel 65 & One more time by Daft Punk, it's fine for it to be such a consistent presence because they were different versions of house music, a genre that itself a form of electro music. In those kinds of scenarios, auto tune fits because it can be used to emphasize the core attributes of the genre. T-pain's schtick was a gimmick, and I feel like we all knew that, even if we didn't want to admit it at the time. The issue with autotune is just a case of too much salt spoils the stew. It's like how bacon became a thing in the early 2010's. Yea, bacon is fine, and even good in some places. But if you have it with every dish at every meal, it's going to wind up having some unintended consequences.

For example Bruno Mars is insanely talented and can hit every pitch perfectly, but he uses Autotune on more mild back tasteful setting to subtly give it's modern pop flair in his production. They say it was Cher watching tv that brought a rise to autotune, but I think they missed the point. It was the guy who edited the song in the first place that was the musical genius!

    Its on every modern song. Every pop song every country song your favorite modern artist uses it.. we have Melodyne by Celemony (the next step up vocal tuning) when we want to offline change the pitch of each note or any not and also change the vibrato and timing of each note sang.. seamlessly invisibly. Tuning is here to stay its not gone anywhere.

    I whole-heartedly agree with the awesome Music RUclipsr, Rick Beato.
    Together, "Autotune" and "Beat Detective" (quantizer) have *ruined modern music!*
    No more humanity, no passion, no originality, and ironically, no damn SOUL.

    6:57 - Believe hit #1 in 23 countries, not 17. Sarah-Michelle Gellar states this on the Divas Live 99 concert when introducing Cher, and it’s also noted on this source: cherconvention.com/Cher.htm

    Aside from the fact that it sounds shitty (especially in Hip Hop), honestly, as a music fan I feel cheated and insulted when autotune is involved.

      It's involved in everything, basically every popular song you've heard has some form of it except for a few exceptions. Most of the time it's used just to polish and touch up vocal tracks. It's not a bad thing to use it or Melodyne or Waves tune. It's just bad if you're a half step off and rely on the software to fix it for you.

    I don't mind autotune, I mind when they use it to pretend that someone that simply can't sing is a real singer. Improving something that is already good is awesome, but creating a singing track out of nothing is just awful,like one of those videos where they create a beautiful person out of a slice of pizza using photoshop.

    Cheddar gets points for mentioning Cher and T-Pain since they were critical to Autotune’s success. But how do you not mention Roger and Zapp who were the first commercial artists to use it? Cheddar loses points for that. I’m glad they didn’t mention several of the worst vultures to use Autotune including YC “racks” and Lil Wayne “Lollipop.”

    Literally everything is autotuned now - even people who can actually sing. That's what happens when you have a load of goons taught 'music production'.

      Of course she is. All speakers consciously or unconsciously use facial expressions and voice intonations to raise their appeal to listeners. In fact, doing that skillfully is an art form.

    I think pitch correction is used more than auto tune now. With pitch correction, you manually tune each notes sung. Plus, it gives a more natural sound
