Having the largest black population west of the Mississippi River, Houston is known as a center of African-American political power, education, economic prosperity, and culture. There is no denying, Houston is an emerging Black Mecca and for those African Americans who are considering relocating for better opportunities, Houston should be a strong candidate.
H-Town does not garner as much Black media attention as places like Atlanta or DC, but it’s starting to gain more popularity in Black America as a community with good schools, reputable health care, and excellent employment opportunities. If you are considering moving on to bigger and better things, you should think about joining the 250 people who relocate to Houston on a daily.

I just moved to Houston today. I’ve been here for less than 24 hours. I immediately called my mother and told her I’m never leaving Houston. Houston is now home for me.
@@GoogleAccount00 I been here for almost sixteen years..I moved down here from Indiana in 2008. I have not looked back since.
@@Courageousbrother I’m originally from Indiana.
@@GoogleAccount00 That's what's up. Northwest Indiana here.
@@Courageousbrother same. Glad to hear you are enjoying Texas!
@@GoogleAccount00 I love Texas. Best decision I have ever made to live here. Job market is wonderful. Opportunities are present daily. Way better than living in Hammond or Gary
This comprehensive list has definitely convinced me that Houston is where I need to be! Lived in Dallas for a number of years, but never felt welcomed and also missed a feeling of black culture. Always felt so welcomed whenever I’ve visited Houston!
This is exactly why I left Dallas. I lived in htx for a few months during covid and never felt more at home. I'll be back permanently in just a few weeks. Can't wait! Dallas made me feel very unwelcome and it's so extremely expensive
I’ve from the Bronx New York and there’s always been a whisper in my ear telling me to go to Texas. I love it already and I’ve never even been there. I see a lot of young Black Millionaires and genuine hood people. I love the accent, the women, the food. I love the whole Texas culture. Shout out Houston and every other place the represents Texas. 💯
I moved here 7 months ago and I love it here!! They are not full, Houston is huge. Those that are complaining about people moving should move themselves or take it up with their local government and tell them to stop building. As black American we can live anywhere we want in the US so come on down!!
We just be playing coco. We love y’all. We don’t like how the cost of living is going up but it makes for fun weekends and social media post
And a great economy
Chile! You ain't sat in traffic on 610 during HLSR and it shows. If you work from home come on, pack mosquito spray. If you're adding to traffic, we're FULL. Butttt if you come anyway stay out of the left lane if you're not going fast enough to risk getting impounded.
@@BananaPhone234 610 trying to get out of the galleria area, you may as well park and go eat because you won’t be moving because it will be a wreck or never ending construction

Houston is such a great, underrated city! So many cultures, good food, and great museums. Yeah it's humid and people drive like crazy, but it is such a great city. What I like best is that I see all cultures mingling and attending museums and cultural events together. It's beautiful lol
@@llcbiz123 it depends on your tolerance; June through September is brutal if you're not used to it. But I'll take that over a Northeastern Winter ANY TIME!

How long ago....
It 's a Big Dream living in Houston
Go Astros! 😉
As a Houstonian and Black professional🤘🏽 this is spot on...Keep up the good work!!
What industry?
I’m living in Dallas currently been here since 2019 and been thinking about moving to Houston. I come there all the time throughout the year and feel like it caters more to black people than the Dallas area. Only thing that concerns me is that there are many Houston born/raised people now living in DFW area and they all say they moved here for more money and that’s what always makes me second guess the move.
Houston job market is heavily in oil/gas, healthcare, and the restaurant industry Outside that, it's really challenging finding a good stable job that pays well. Dallas has a more diverse and stronger economy with better jobs that pay better. But the property taxes are slightly cheaper in Houston than Dallas if you plan to buy a home. But yeah Houston caters to Black people better than Houston but I like diversity
Side note...that house pri e has gone up due ro people moving here and offering way over asking. That also makes it hard for TX residents to own because the pay doesn't go up. Just my two cents
It's because housing price went up around the world. There is no where that wasn't impacted
I agree. The same thing happened in Raleigh NC when people from NY/NJ came down for cheaper prices. So now you’ll see people from VA/NC/SC relocate to ATL and Houston and Dallas to get the next discount the discount always goes south, but the pay scale goes up as you go North.
Yes, but if you buy land then build it's cheaper. My son along with several friends bought 5.62 acres of land, had it plated then had homes built for them then sold the three lots and was able to build for average $155k.
@@kachk.p1001 that’s what I’m doing now buying land in different states. 💪🏽
Yes so true because the cost of living here is almost just as high as New York or California.
Im Inspired!! Would love to open a fine art gallery there. See you soon HTOWN!
Native Houstonian and Black professional. Strongly encourage Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, and Charlotte for Black folks. Plus there is still a lot of land to live on and be developed in the far north and south sides of the greater Houston area if you are looking to purchase a home.
Keep in mind if a meskin calls you the n word. . .its cool
Great video! I moved here two years ago and it’s been UP ever since!

I moved here in 2020 and I love it! I think we a little crowded as it is though lol
I have a alot of family that live in Houston and they are all doing very well. 🤘🏽
Everyone won't have the same experience though.
You NEED a car to live there, no getting around it. It took 3 buses for me to get from SW Houston to NW Houston.
Depending on the area, crime is either non-existent or extreme. There's no in between lol. Spring Branch is like the Wild, Wild, West. But Bellaire, TX is placid.
Texas is a prison for profit state like Georgia, where they have to keep the cells filled. You'll go to Harris County for the smallest thing, like jaywalking.
When I got to the Greyhound station, every single person muttered "I gotta get tf outta here." Just be careful y'all.
You are absolutely correct
Katy is good too.
Ppl relocating prepare by having transportation, jobs/businesses lined up, money stacked up and areas mapped out to live. Preparation is key to any move
@@b.goddess1940 BOOM! Don’t get mad if you don’t have a car and are subjected to the low vibrational level convos of those who don’t either!
Definitely have a job/business and living arrangements lined up. I moved here 2008 and before moving I spent a yr traveling back and forth looking for work and a place to live.
If interested in a area to live, be sure to visit the area in the day time and revisit it at night. Great place to start your life or start over!

Too many bad laws ,mainly put in place for blacks only ! The humidity and the flooding is terrible!!!!!!!😓😓😓😫😫😫😫😫

I’ve been living in Houston for 31 yrs and the older I get the more I want to move far away from here, I don’t understand.

I've lived in Houston for 15 years but I am slowly considering Atlanta or Charlotte for some time. Don't get me wrong, I love Htown but I'm ready for a change of pace.
I could understand that. Could it just be a thing to where you just want to see something different and what it has to offer?
I remember when I was in boot camp I overheard my black drill instructor talking about houston. He called it chocolate city and kept going on about how much he liked it.
I’m moving to Galveston County tomorrow from Midwest ❤️🔥🥰I’m excited
How are you liking it??
Y’all are more than welcome to visit, we can squeeze y’all in but as far as moving here, we’re at capacity baby!
There's definitely more space for ppl to move here but they shouldn't bc it ain't all that especially if they have school aged kids
@@angellicbeautyproducts9479 you from here?
@@slioness0078 thankfully I'm not from here originally and that gives me the experience and perspective of someone who has something to compare it to.
@@angellicbeautyproducts9479 That explains your perspective. I think houston is all that from the diversity, to the economy, to the ppl that are from here, to the vibes it provides for and the skylines and a lot more. A lot of ppl move here and try to rag on it but something brought y’all here to begin with. Since everyone has been moving here based off what they heard everything had gone up from the cost of living too traffic to crime so when we say we at capacity, that’s what we mean. Our city is changing based off a bunch of ppl who come here and complain

Can yall do a video like this for Dallas-Ft Worth? I'm learning to settle here and more of my black family from Milwaukee are coming here too
Compared to Houston, Dallas falls short when it comes to black culture. Black people there seem to only reside on one side in both cities, which is crazy. Lots of racism. Not a lot of black entrepreneurs. No one goes to Paul Quinn university… There’s a lot of reasons not to go to Dallas
Houston over Dallas for sure. I left Dallas for DC. Best decision I ever made.

@@kimwaters3835, nooooo!!! I hate Milwaukee!!! Born and raised in this mess of a city!!!
Love your rundown! I haven’t been to Houston since the early 1990’s. I’m currently in the Bay Area and have had it on my heart and mind to relocate back east or in the south. Not to sound negative but the Bay Area, and California in general, is not for Black people. I’ve been considering returning back to the DC Area or perhaps NYC but have thought about Houston too (would love the weather better than back east tbh). But yeah, H-Town sounds pretty promising for enterprising black folks.
I don’t know about living in the state of Texas. Although it is beautiful, the political dynamic has historically been a point of contention for me personally.

Great video, very informative for me. I moved here March. Having a bit of an issue finding work but I also lack a degree. needless to say im not complaining about it. I've come here to work on strengthening a skill. I came from Chicago and I needed a destination that somewhat matched large black areas and a safer place to live. I love it here. People seem so much more happier and eager to help. I will look into those organizations you mentioned because in the meantime going through my current hiring process, I would love to find a place I can volunteer and rub shoulders.

Houston looked like a good city but... after looking into its layout weather and endless suburban sprawl and highways.. ill never move there. Black folks need to look at cities from a environmental and cultural aspect too, not just how much money you can make or the percentage of blacks.
Preach
Soo what would be a better city to live? I’m just wondering?
@@kennethmcgaughey3681 Dallas Austin
@@77waygodh11 Dallas is built nearly identical to Houston.
The problem is most cities in America that are built much better than Houston are either too expensive for the average Black American or has a very low Black population. Houston biggest cons is the incompetent infrastructure/traffic/ endless sprawl and weather. Those are reasons that make me want to move out of Houston at times. But than I look at other options and at my late 30s with a family, staying here at least till my kids graduate might be the best move. Now if you don’t care about predominantly White spaces and cost of living than there’s much better cities to move to in Houston. The average Black American though clearly prefers cities that offer economic opportunities, affordability and Good size black culture and representation. Or perhaps more Black Americans should move to smaller cities.
That's my city! H-town native baby!
Looking to move here from Atlanta. I heard it was similar. Any feedback?
Somewhat similar but ATL Black population is larger
Yes, Houston and Atlanta have a lot of similarities. It should be a fairly smooth transition for you.
Moved to Houston in 2013 and have been here since then, it’s a lot to do and drivable to the beaches and do not sleep on galveston, yes the water looks that way but if your want that crystal blue water then go a little down south of the gulf it’s not far. It’s a lot of businesses and nice places for black and different cultures as well, third ward is in the east end of downtown if you want black neighbors with hot real-estate and being able to walk downtown to clubs and amazing hotels and sporting events it’s a great place for you. Houston is amazing and it’s pretty dang big ( pause) from the woodlands to sugar land to katy to pearland Houston will always keep you with things to do and you won’t be robbed everywhere you go like atlanta 😂 but stay away From the grey hound and McDonald’s downtown. If you’ve lived in a major city you know what’s next to it .
You know some stuff
I havent been to the beach yet. where exactly do you settle to swim in crystal clear waters?
@@chanellw5586 the water is everything but crystal clear
People go in Galveston water all the time and it looks like sewage almost it's so dirty. None of the water in the Houston area beaches are great the best water would be down near corpus area but definitely not near Houston metro
@@bcandydrews859 it’s lagoons around Houston that are man made and man galveston is still cool and the water is brown because it’s just always looked like that, find pics from 100 years ago in Galveston the water was still brown and it’s always been brown because of the sand. If someone could figure it out I am sure they would do something about it but it is what it is besides of a beach is all someone cares about enjoy florida while paying New York prices now or people can go back to the west coast and have fun paying 1.3 million for a three bedroom house. Galveston is a side attraction to Houston it’s not Houston.
I'll take Dallas over Houston anyday! Can you make a video on Dallas and moving there as a young Black American with a growing family?
Same thing I want to know. I’ve heard Houston is much like Atlanta. Coming from the East Coast I never wanted to live in Atlanta. I’m considering Dallas myself.
Wtf is this? Depression?
Nobody cares. We want to know about Houston! OMFG
I love Dallas
Love to live there
I can’t stand Houston..mostly just parking lots, freeways and soulless unwalkable sprawl. Zero character or personality whatsoever. Not even gonna start with the weather..
That’s pretty much every sunbelt city. Dallas, Phoenix and Atlanta sprawl as well.
Enjoy cali my friend we’ll enjoy Houston, now don’t come back when you have to pay 1.2 million for a two bedroom house in Cali.
@@youtubeguy9316 I don’t live in cali thank god. LA and San Jose are just as bad as Houston

I live in Arlington Tx been in Texas since 2013 and I can’t wait to relocate. The south is not for me.
Arlington is one big bland suburb. There’s plenty of other southern cities better than Arlington.
What about black creatives? Being from ATL, we have a lot of opportunity and I’m wondering if Houston offers the same with a possible relocation.
Probably not. When it comes to artistry I think ATL may have Houston beat
I've lived there, and I still have family there; however, I will never consider living there again. If I were to move back to Texas I would definitely move to San Antonio.
San Antonio is nice not too far from Austin depending on what side of town you reside on.. I was stationed there many years ago
I love h town but San Antonio that my pick
Seems like a better city to visit than to live. My significant other is wanting to relocate there for a job opportunity and he's trying to hype the area up to me but I'm not seeing the appeal lol
I have lived in Houston since 1983 when it wasn’t even on the map. Houston has transformed into one of the most diverse cities in the country. Not only more affordable and opportunities for blacks. But also less about class or status like the in north or east coast.
If you cannot afford flood insurance and the deductibles associated with it then moving to Houston without any flood insurance be would disastrous for a working class family. #HurricaneHarvey #HoustonFloods #Fema #NaturalDisaster
I had the privilege of visiting Houston last month on my Southern Tour. I had been to Houston in the late 70s and it was was nothing like it is now. As Houston has a very large African American presence it was obvious they are not as progressive. While many blew me away with their business ideas I did not see their businesses thriving or supported. I was told it was because of the day of the week. However the weather and the distance to get to a venue were equally as bad it made me wonder about the climate change issue. Houston is a Oil town and the people there not only did not care about the future of the environment they actually knew nothing about it. The cost of living was lower in the suburbs just like every other city. But restaurant price were very high. My neice was discriminated against in the Woodlands and was not allowed into a roof top Lounge clearly with white patrons that was clearly playing R&B and Hip Hop music. Overall the weather and driving required is way too much for me.
Yea i live in the Woodlands i have never had issues out here like that but as far as the weather etc. I totally agree. I do think there are some black businesses that are thriving though.
That because the woodlands is not Houston
Progressive ? You mean you’re disappointed they weren’t overly liberal?
Houston is a transportation hub but it was never mentioned. I felt this could been better with explaining blue collar jobs such as trades. Much of this was good but some of it was fluff that could have been combined.
If you do decide to move to houston be prepared for all the Ahole drivers on the road and I think the cars here don’t come with turn signals.
Really? I always thought the drivers drove like they do in Pennsylvania. I live in Phoenix, and I probably think the same as you with the drivers out here. I don't have much experience with Houston drivers though.
Born and raised had my kids here been all over the country Htown is one of the most diverse the food is great we have communities where your neighbors may be the colors of the rainbow and we are also LGBTQ friendly. Job opportunities. A great medical center museums art district etc. oh and check out the Buffalo Soldiers museum.
But we are not without our share of issues & by that I mean not just those who commit crimes are packing guns & road rage is out of control. You'll never see police on the freeways because they're to busy handling shootings deaths probably. Don't honk at people they may shoot you. A car is a must unless you live in certain areas...so if you're used to a good transit system or rail well... keep in mind our city houses more people than Alabama and is rather large so when relocating for work think about transportation for work. Housing prices are going up fast.
But I still love it here it's my hometown-welcome to Htown if you make it yours.
Traffic is terrible takes at least an hour to get anywhere
Have you ever been to LA, ATL? Were a BIG City lol
Please do one on Dallas!
lived there for 16 years and miss it

Negative, African Americans shouldn’t move to Houston; Houston sits in the hurricane belt. Also, African Americans shouldn’t want to live in Texas period and should be focused owning property outside of the US.
Then where should we move 2?
We been here 400 years. Black Americans should feel comfortable moving anywhere in the United States since we built it. I've considered moving out of the states but a lot of countries aren't developed as we are. Maybe south Africa or Ghana but even at that America is still more developed. Alot of African immigrants come here.
Bruh stfu it’s 50 million of us in USA most of us have been here for centuries. This is our home continent not Africa.
This also happens in other southern states too…
