  • When Bill Gates visited Wired in 1996 the editors interviewed him. I don't think we ever did anything with the interview. I had completely forgotten I had video'ed it.

He knew where Microsoft would be all along regardless of the monetary projections, and he knew that Microsoft would be a tools and infrastructure provider instead of a content aggregator and provider. Maybe he thought about this interview long after it was done and reformulated Microsoft's strategy when Bing was created and even when launching Azure. He evolved while knowing about Microsoft's core strengths.
All things considered I think it was a million times better to face Bill Gates and argue with him than talk with Steve Jobs even about the most trivial details. Jobs always looked like he thought he was above everybody else and was about to bite people's heads off.

This video is great. Bill Gates express a lot of interesting and forward looking concepts. However, it is clear that he is trying to evade and mislead the interviewers into thinking that he is not into internet advertising or that a tech company like Microsoft could not compete in this market. I think he knew (and planned) that Microsoft could be a dominant player at this market, but the US government put a stop to him so Microsoft wouldn't be a complete monopoly in all Tech areas.

    • @geroutathat

Yeah anti competition suits were heating up all over the place, they didnt ask him in and he goes in to try and tell them to print a story that they micorsoft not interested in the internet, they didnt do anything with is, so he probably kept having poor people executed in drug fueled rages back at his home. I remember very clearly back then, Internet Explorer was straight up at war with netscape navigator. Even if you say disagree with the anti trust for bundling IE with windows, you can not disagree that microsoft was even trying to intefere in html by supporting non standard tags that netscape did not, meaning lots of corporate sites had to, HAD TO use IE or nothing.

Well, he was right but he underestimated trog cell phone users who see a dollar sign and just push it to pay for everything. They don't realize there are adblockers and other ways to share information without paying.
These big companies came to the internet and are now trying to lock things down to prevent people from sharing information. The DEFAULT mode of the internet was just sharing information - now companies are trying to change the way this place works for profit.
You used to be able to right click every single image or video on the internet to SAVE IT. These days? Not as common. They're RUINING it.

Bill Gates wasn't CEO when the mobile battle happened, although you could argue that he maintained effective leadership until his last day at Microsoft in 2008.

Apple revolutionized the way we listen to and think about music with the iPod and iTuens, changed the smartphone and serving as the template as the way we design and use smartphones today, bring the idea of millions of apps is your pocket, created the best selling tablet and Apple Watch sales now make up a majority of not just smartwatch sales but watch sales in general.
