I had kinda hoped the Korean unique unit would be the Hwacha. It is a multiple rocket launch device with rocket arrows. I would think in game it would function somewhat similar to an onager. With a much higher range, higher movement speed and more projectiles fired however with a lower rate of fire, less damage, less splash and less HP. I think it would have the largest range of any unit as that was historically the Hwacha's best feature, it could shoot further than any archer and unlike cannonballs it did actually have a hint of accuracy at long range. It would be sort of like having 20 longbowmen shooting all at once however with a much slower reload. I think it would likely be something like 18 range and maybe a unique tech to push it all the way to 21.
Okay, having viewed this a few times (I like rewatching videos I find enjoyable), I think you should look at the Turtle Ship as something that isn't quite a Galleon replacement, but more as a Fire Ship killer. Turtle Ships can tank Fire Ships for a good while, and their attack is going to blow the Fire Ships apart. You want to use them sorta like how you use Pikes to guard Archers; don't chase the enemy with Turtle Ships (they're too slow for that), but use them as a defensive wall so that Fire Ships that try and attack will get massacred. When pushing with Turtle Ships, think of them like Teutonic Knights. Have them advance with Galleons behind them, and your opponent will keep getting pushed back because they don't want to engage those Turtle Ships head-on. Even if your Turtle Ships die, they will soak up a ton of enemy damage. The only race I would not recommend using Turtle Ships against is the Spanish; Cannon Galleons can blast right through Turtle Ships, and Spanish Cannons are undodgeable by Turtle Ships.
Saying that turtle ships are cannon galleon replacement is the biggest blunder one can say, ever. They are to be used as tanks, like TKs, and primarily to be used for defensive play, as they are really expensive to justify massing them. One thing they will do is force enemy to take pro active measures to deal with turtle ships, as only demolition ships and Spanish cannon galleons can effectively counter them. That said, too many players ignore the power of monks against the Koreans. It is easy to convert turtle ships from the shore and waste the Korean economy. Seriously, player needs to use monks more. Spirit of the Law also thinks Redemption is the most important monk tech, imo, it is far less important than Heresy. Heresy prevents the enemy monk from messing with your unit priorities.
FIRST! I shall take this opportunity to thank you spirit, it is your videos which inspired me to get a steam account and buy the game again. Thanks for making me rediscover my childhood fascination!
Nice civ overview, but I noticed a tiny little thing ;) At 1:50 you say korean siege onagers outrange (amongst others) malian and slav castles. Isn't this impossible since malians and slavs are only present in versions of the game where the korean bonus is no minimum range instead of +1 range?
@@renmajestic3940 YTeah I miss pre-patch koreans and using oneagers ACTUALLY as siege engines fighting castles instead of just anti-infantry... After the patches agaionst korean onager range I lost half of my motivation to play AOE

Spirit I wish you mentioned this in the video; it's one of the things that make War Wagons (and Post-Imp Koreans in general) so powerful -- since a few trailing monks and some unit-shuffling micro means your war wagons seem to last forever. Not only does this mean you don't need a constant stream of units to replenish frontline losses, but it also means more units (and more powerful units) consistently engaged on the front line. In Post-Imp, max population battles, this is really, really powerful and will quickly build momentum to a steamroll. As you said, top tier boom civilization. Not just because of their defenses but because their juggernaut is so powerful.
Koreans definitely my favourite civ. I definitely play differently than him though. I think their power is in that they can counter any units with a pure army of ranged, which means you can sweep without taking any damage. And even if there was an issue they have access to all of the trash units. The advantage of turtle ships is you dont have to worry about counters apart from speed, So just mix them into a bunch of fast fires and this becomes less of an issue. Getting a single villager to build towers/castles behind enemy lines is actually not often difficult to do, and even if you dont towers are the most versatile way to stop early rushes (he really doesnt like their early game). Their biggest weakness is that they have no speed, if you have an issue in one place and your army is in another its going to be difficult or at least slow to have a response so you have to keep an extra eye on your blind spots.
Korean Civ is WAAYYYYYY too OP, especially with War wagons, aaaand TURTLE SHIPS! Tyhose things are downright ridiculous! Not to mention their cannonball fly like 5 times faster then cannon galleon, which looks like slow motion! This one is utter nonsense right there!
A great video as always. While I don't play the Koreans often, I am a huge fan of the Turtle Ship. It's a very good Fire Ship counter (And considering their terrible speed/missing demo ship I imagine that was the idea) and I also feel they're HUGELY superior to demo ships, a unit I loathe to use. I hate the one-time use of them. It gives me this feeling of tension whenever I use them, thinking that if I use them at one point, I'd need them more later and regret wasting them. With Turtle Ships, you can get so much more bang for your buck, and I think that (along with what you listed) really stands out for them. I also enjoyed your argument about such strong, expensive units being good in that they don't take up too much of your population limit. It's something I've never heard before, and as somebody who loves his trash (Go Magyars) it's something I'm going to seriously need to consider in the future.
(@ the last part) I've noticed that when I play koreans, usually by the end of the game looking at the stats I'm surprised I made the least amount of units out of everybody and usually had the most kills and trade profit. I make mostly Siege Onagers, EEWs, and Halbs (maybe some cannons) and make tooons of trade carts, and I end up kicking ass.
The Amazing Ace Meracruzer It's definitely the way to go. Korean late-games are still strong in 1v1s if you can manage to save one of your enemy's markets. During a recent game I pushed the AI far back away from their original base, forcing them to rebuild further away. I saved their market and started training trade carts, trading with the enemy market and making a killing in gold. It's funny how bad I used to think they were. If you know how to utilize their units properly (I'd definitely say they require a lot of practice to be good with) they are absolutely deadly.
Sam Rodrigues nice lol, and yeah I remember back when I was a noob when someone asked me what the worst civ was I'd say koreans but now they're my favorite civ lol
I always thought of the Turtle Ship as a replacement for the Demolition Ships, since the Koreans don't get those. Also, are you aware that they used a different model in the base game?
The turtle ships will show their greatest strengths in bottleneck areas of the water where the galleons will have a greatly reduced DPS because there is a small front line and the many of them are in the back not attacking.
but you also have to keep in mind that turtle ships have less range than galleons, allowing multiple layers of galleons to fire. Turtle ships seem to function best against ships that aren't part of the galley line, strong armor against demos and fire ships, and can catch up to cannon galleons, but the superior range of galleons makes turtle ships only on-par with them.
mc trump Turtle ships are to be used primarily for defence, and not even to be considered in an sea raid. They can draw in fire from the galleons and make it easier for towers and castle to eliminate them. It is best not to chase at all with the turtles, since you will be easy bait for demo ships to blow up your expensive turtle.
One thing I'd like to add with comboing war wagons + onagers is the fact you can protect your onagers very well with them as you can literally use the wagons as a mobile wall. Supplementing them with some bombardiers to protect the wagons vs melee units (you obviously want to limit your onagers firing at your wagons as much as you humanly can) and you get a pretty damn scary setup.
Here's something you didn't point out in regards to the Korean Villager LOS bonus: it's super-helpful on Nomad maps. Having that extra line of sight makes it MUCH easier to find good TC locations or to spot enemy TCs.
QueenOf FishPeople Yes I agree. Drawn out, post-imperial games are much more fun. That's why I like to play as Koreans on water maps and Byzantines on land. Also why I suck ass online. My early game is just weak.
@@genevievew.5837 I also play for fun, and when I played with a real Mongol online, he wanted to humiliate me using his people, but I was fortunately using the Portuguese instead of the Spanish, so he rushed them instead. :-) His rushing ended the game where it was just boring.
korians are my favorite civlizaton because of there turtle ships i have regulary wreaked my freinds navys with them now we play land maps for some srange reason.
Step 1: pick koreans step 2: pick black forest step 3: turtle up like you were defeating from the russian counter attack in 42/43 with mass walls, towers, castles, bombard towers, long range onagers, and cannoniers step 4: watch the opponent slowly going crazy about ur strat step 5: profit
John Peters I know this is an old comment, but if you’re into anime, give “Legend of the Galactic Heroes” a watch. One of the main characters is partly inspired by Admiral Yi, and the whole series is just great.
Finally my favorite civ =D I love playing black forest and making like 40 Siege Onagers and flattening everything that comes towards me. #1 Rule of the Koreans: If your onagers stay alive, you win. Unstoppable Koreans: Bombard Towers to cement your position (make only 1-2 castles, save rest of your stone for BBTs) Bombard Cannons to protect your Towers and SOs Siege Onagers to destroy everything Halbs to defend Onagers just in case cavalry somehow magically get past your volleys of death/Bombard Towers War Wagons just for lols If you have enough trade and start it early enough this is total feasible because I do this all the time. The Siege Onager should always be the main bulk of your army. _Never_ stop creating them, you can never have enough.
Awesome, Thanks Spirit! I should say I enjoy all the videos you put up. Just been trying to improve my own aoe2 game as well and was interested to watch that series in particular. I see a lot of pro or semi pro games on youtube, and that can be a little disheartening as there skill level is much higher than mine so its hard to take lessons away from them. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I find as a general rule I also learn a lot more watching/talking to people of a similar skill to me than I do from watching professionals (and that's not just with AoE2 but everything in life).
+Spirit of the Law I personally find playing games that are rated around 100 rating higher than me is a great way to learn, because they are a lot more likely to punish your small mistakes, but not give you the idea that you are completely outplayed and had no chance of winning it from the beginning. It's a trade-off between feeling comfortable against playing versus your opponent and the opponent teaching you what mistakes you made. An aoe2 expert player told me that the best way to improve is not giving jack shit about your rating, and told me he himself learned most from losing weeks non-stop from somebody who was better than him. Admittedly, it's hard to keep on playing if you keep losing, but I personally think playing against better players is the best way to improve.
+forgingiron123 one of my worst dark age experiences was playing as Chinese and absolutely failing to find any sheep or berries for about a minute. Screwed up the beginning of my game to no end. Researching loom and chopping wood only gets you so far.
... Is this the same AoE2 that I played when I was young? I didn't know that they all had different upgrades and ranges and stuff. All I saw were cool looking units killing each other.
Updates as of DE Update 40874: Construction speed bonus for fortifications removed Military units (except siege) cost -20% wood (unique units have increased cost to compensate)
He linked it in the description of that earlier video where the "ontage" premiered. I'd have gone and fetched it for you if I remembered what video that was.
Sometimes, age of empires make bullshits. We did not have such the wagons. Our great ancient civilizations (Goguryeo and Balhae) were mostly specialised in Cavalry and archers. After we lost Manchuria to the foreign forces, we had almost nothing. They had to focus on them not fallen kingdoms after 10C.
so I cant play online for various reasons, so I play against "hard" difficulty AI , and they keep overpowering me really quickly , they start creating 4x as much troops as I do and what not, and I spend the game playing defensive until I drain his troops , then I struggle to attack , any tips?
In my experience Demolition Ships are a hard counter to Turtle Ships. When massed heavy demolition ships are much cheaper and quickly wipe out the slow firing short ranged turtle ships. They may have 64% of their health left after one demo ship. However, in a large scale battle a single demo ship attacking turtles ships is effectively hitting the resources of three times as many galleys. It's a big deal when the numbers of units are high.
I never understood the melee armor on the turtle ship. Is there any occasion apart from being attacked by a land unit on the coast where melee armor on a ship is useful?
The villagers extra sigh range is also extremely useful in nomad maps, specially at the start when placing your tc and exploring the shoreline for a good dock placement. I feel this is a lot more important to mention than say seeing a wolf just a little bit earlier to look for a hill.
Turtle ships on a rivers map with cannon galleons behind them are a scary sight, and coming from both directions eliminates the "i can just leave since theyre slow" issue. It's a juggernaught strategy really
I wouldve done the galleon test slightly differently. turtle ships, realistically in a game, wouldnt start rihht next to galleons unless they are attacking your dock. i would start them all out outside of maximum range, and make the turtle ships travel the distance. great video otherwise!
For most of them I believe I did patrol them into each other from the edge of the galleon range and just cut out the first part of that in the video so it wasn't as ridiculously fast and sped up
extra villager sight will be helpfull at tower rush too. normaly if enemy spot a villager he knows trush but with extra sight you can prevent that
I was gonna post about this too. It can really make the difference. The extra LOS can also be very beneficial on Nomad due to the lack of scout.

Hey Spirit! Can we get a longer "Ontage"? :)
I'd like to just have like, a satisfying minute of massive amounts of deaths.
That sounds fun, and then remix it into one of those 10 hour looping videos like the "Taking the hobbits to isengard" video

FIRST! I shall take this opportunity to thank you spirit, it is your videos which inspired me to get a steam account and buy the game again. Thanks for making me rediscover my childhood fascination!
Same here spirit, you're the best! Also, I took a logic class this last semester and Modus Tollens FTW! haha
same here bought it few days ago and trying to learn AoE2 now^^
I just saw it on sale in December and thought it can’t be worse than what I remember - I wasn’t good at the game 😂
@@nofoxgiven6561 See here but this dude is making me reconsider and buy AOE2 and learn it all over again.
You said first but there's no second >:(
Nice civ overview, but I noticed a tiny little thing ;)
At 1:50 you say korean siege onagers outrange (amongst others) malian and slav castles. Isn't this impossible since malians and slavs are only present in versions of the game where the korean bonus is no minimum range instead of +1 range?
True, nice catch
As a tip, In the 1.0a version, Onagers had 12 range, so they could fire all castles except teutons.
@@renmajestic3940 YTeah I miss pre-patch koreans and using oneagers ACTUALLY as siege engines fighting castles instead of just anti-infantry...
After the patches agaionst korean onager range I lost half of my motivation to play AOE
@@renmajestic3940 i aculy stll have conquers 1a. I never play it since i have de and are conquers is the disc versan, so i can only play agienst the crappy ai. But still,12 range siege onegers are SO AWSOME
I'll say it a million times. SOTL has put so much passion and love into these videos. He's just incredible. These vids are so special. Just INCREDIBLE
will u make a vid about Zero leaving ?
Seing that war wagons are so tanky, i'd like to know how does one replenish their hp - are they healed or repaired?
Healed by monks. Only siege units and buildings should be affected by the repair command
This seems counterintuitive, but good to know nontheless
Don't forget about ships, those are repaired by villagers too.
They count as horse archers.
So do Pro Korean players play the Koreans? XD
only with DM on Team Islands, which happens almost never.
No, they play Starcraft.
Koreans are a bottom tier civ in the most popular map Arabia due to their poor economy in early-mid game.
Korean Civ is WAAYYYYYY too OP, especially with War wagons, aaaand
TURTLE SHIPS! Tyhose things are downright ridiculous! Not to mention
their cannonball fly like 5 times faster then cannon galleon, which
looks like slow motion!
This one is utter nonsense right there!
digimaks The cannonball speed you're talking about is a Spanish civ bonus, not Korean.
I thought +3 LoS for villager is also a great bonus on nomad. Anyway, as a korean, I approve this civ overview. :3
Yes! On Nomad +3 LoS is extremely useful.
Yeah the third most deadly nomad civ after Chinese and Mayans
antares031 진심 한국사람이에요?
Yes, I am. Why you ask?

Demolition ships are so fun. I love kami kaze-ing everyone, especially groups of idiots at the beach.
Only 2 civs left to go! Good job Spirit!
plus the four afican kingdom civs
+ some updates given some changes that happened along the way?
Chinese, Malians, Portuguese, Ethiopians, plus Berbers...Berbers would e a good overview. they seem useful.
There's also the Aztecs, the last AoC civ besides the Chinese that has yet to get an overview.
Holy crap I didn't realize he's done almost all of them!
(faster firing) Saracen and (the cheaper) Viking Galleons... *wink wink* ;)
stop saying wink wink and use girly emoticons its so gay dude
mc trump Turtle ships are to be used primarily for defence, and not even to be considered in an sea raid. They can draw in fire from the galleons and make it easier for towers and castle to eliminate them. It is best not to chase at all with the turtles, since you will be easy bait for demo ships to blow up your expensive turtle.
And in deathmatches, you can't kite when there are a gazillion ships.
16:48 Actually, you gave the Celts an A+ :P
Did I? That's embarrassing :)
One thing I'd like to add with comboing war wagons + onagers is the fact you can protect your onagers very well with them as you can literally use the wagons as a mobile wall. Supplementing them with some bombardiers to protect the wagons vs melee units (you obviously want to limit your onagers firing at your wagons as much as you humanly can) and you get a pretty damn scary setup.
attributes of Korean is not important. Korean players playing Korean is what matters
Here's something you didn't point out in regards to the Korean Villager LOS bonus: it's super-helpful on Nomad maps. Having that extra line of sight makes it MUCH easier to find good TC locations or to spot enemy TCs.
Regular players *sees tower * *wow I can defend my base with this * *pro* *sees tower * *i* *wonder* *how* *i* *can* *put* *this* *down* *my* *opponents* *throat* *within* *2* *minutes*

Yes I agree. Drawn out, post-imperial games are much more fun. That's why I like to play as Koreans on water maps and Byzantines on land. Also why I suck ass online. My early game is just weak.
@@genevievew.5837 I only play single player on easy to boom to post imperial..
The best defense is a good offense.
Step 1: pick koreans
step 2: pick black forest
step 3: turtle up like you were defeating from the russian counter attack in 42/43 with mass walls, towers, castles, bombard towers, long range onagers, and cannoniers
step 4: watch the opponent slowly going crazy about ur strat
step 5: profit
The unique unit of Koreans: tower... 8 + 5 ranges overall...
Does anyone know admiral yi from Extra Credits series Extra History ?
If not go look it up and watch the vids they are great !
He invented the Turtleship and was a great admiral.
@@joostkau9730 your second comment contains a massive understatement
John Peters I know this is an old comment, but if you’re into anime, give “Legend of the Galactic Heroes” a watch. One of the main characters is partly inspired by Admiral Yi, and the whole series is just great.
Finally my favorite civ =D
I love playing black forest and making like 40 Siege Onagers and flattening everything that comes towards me.
#1 Rule of the Koreans: If your onagers stay alive, you win.
Unstoppable Koreans:
Bombard Towers to cement your position (make only 1-2 castles, save rest of your stone for BBTs)
Bombard Cannons to protect your Towers and SOs
Siege Onagers to destroy everything
Halbs to defend Onagers just in case cavalry somehow magically get past your volleys of death/Bombard Towers
War Wagons just for lols
If you have enough trade and start it early enough this is total feasible because I do this all the time.
The Siege Onager should always be the main bulk of your army. _Never_ stop creating them, you can never have enough.
I think Koreans may be my new favorite. I love playing defense
I would watch the shit out of a 10 minute, normal speed "Ontage". Make it happen Spirit! Love your videos man.
But still no road to 1800? has the series ended?
It'll happen again
Awesome, Thanks Spirit! I should say I enjoy all the videos you put up. Just been trying to improve my own aoe2 game as well and was interested to watch that series in particular. I see a lot of pro or semi pro games on youtube, and that can be a little disheartening as there skill level is much higher than mine so its hard to take lessons away from them. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Please keep up the normal gameplay too, love it all :D
We need a new korena video, the civs is completly diferent now
Hey Spirit can you do the Chinese next? I personally think the East Asian civs are the most OP ones in the game.
Hello? Spanish much?
+Robin Bernardinis I find the Spanish aren't great in the early game. Just don't let them get to Imperial.
+KorKhan89 The same can be said for Koreans. But in the late game Spanish are stronger.
Chinese as well. I found it extremely hard to play as Chinese if I cannot make a tech boom due to raiding.
Hmm I'd actually say that Chinese are the least op civ in the game, at least of the Asian ones.
thanks for this. now I know how to handle onagers instead on of OWNAGE-ring my units
I was waiting so much for the video. Thanks for the efforts you put forth in your videos, Spirit :)
Are you still going to be doing road to 1800?
For sure
Chinese please!
Yas pls SotL!!!!!!!
Yes, please! You can do it SotL !! : )
Yeah, I never could get the hang of the Chinese dark age build order.
+KorKhan89 I know that first thing is loom, then...
?????
+forgingiron123 one of my worst dark age experiences was playing as Chinese and absolutely failing to find any sheep or berries for about a minute. Screwed up the beginning of my game to no end. Researching loom and chopping wood only gets you so far.
... Is this the same AoE2 that I played when I was young? I didn't know that they all had different upgrades and ranges and stuff. All I saw were cool looking units killing each other.
Kim Jong-Un is proud!
Um...........
korean passive: dae po dong labour missile - onager range becomes global

You should update it !! the TECH have changed a lot !!!
Updates as of DE Update 40874:
Construction speed bonus for fortifications removed
Military units (except siege) cost -20% wood (unique units have increased cost to compensate)
Are you gonna do the African Kingdoms Civ overviews?
too bad Korean don't get Hwaca
I think the Onager range bonus is reference to the Hwaca.
whats the song of the "ontage"? he used it already in an earlier video, but i still dont know the name :(

Well, everything has to end, even SotL will leave us someday - there is nothing meant to live forever.

Try BBQturk he had good vids.
War Wagons should be given the ballista piercing shot.
My Korean Turtle ships got rekt by the Viking longboats though! I thought I had a badass navy until it was destroyed by them longboats :S
I find it hard to believe you haven't done a video on onagers.
ps - great work as usual
How do the onagers outrange malian and slav castles if they are only available in the expansions?
so I cant play online for various reasons, so I play against "hard" difficulty AI , and they keep overpowering me really quickly , they start creating 4x as much troops as I do and what not, and I spend the game playing defensive until I drain his troops , then I struggle to attack , any tips?
In my experience Demolition Ships are a hard counter to Turtle Ships. When massed heavy demolition ships are much cheaper and quickly wipe out the slow firing short ranged turtle ships. They may have 64% of their health left after one demo ship. However, in a large scale battle a single demo ship attacking turtles ships is effectively hitting the resources of three times as many galleys. It's a big deal when the numbers of units are high.
Charles Lathrop
I guess people don't play smart with the Koreans then. Who in their right mind masses turtle ships? 5 at a time is good enough.
I never understood the melee armor on the turtle ship. Is there any occasion apart from being attacked by a land unit on the coast where melee armor on a ship is useful?
MAN! How much Koreans has changed through the years!
Why the hell does the turtle ships still lack an oar animation in the HD version?
Mthammere2010 lag probably
The villagers extra sigh range is also extremely useful in nomad maps, specially at the start when placing your tc and exploring the shoreline for a good dock placement. I feel this is a lot more important to mention than say seeing a wolf just a little bit earlier to look for a hill.
Turtle ships on a rivers map with cannon galleons behind them are a scary sight, and coming from both directions eliminates the "i can just leave since theyre slow" issue. It's a juggernaught strategy really
Too bad that is just asking to get blown up by demo ships.
This should be redone cus they have changed considerably
Koreans don't have the best Siege in the game because only their onager line receives a bonus. Their other siege weapons are not fully upgraded.
In my game, Koreans have 12 range. That’s insane. I play them only for that.
I wouldve done the galleon test slightly differently. turtle ships, realistically in a game, wouldnt start rihht next to galleons unless they are attacking your dock. i would start them all out outside of maximum range, and make the turtle ships travel the distance. great video otherwise!
For most of them I believe I did patrol them into each other from the edge of the galleon range and just cut out the first part of that in the video so it wasn't as ridiculously fast and sped up
Ah, okay cool. Just wanted to make sure we got as accurate test results as we could :)
Did AOE2de increase something to compensate for the decreased HP with towers? :(
You'll probably need to redo this one since Koreans have gotten so many changes over the past 5 years.
Havent played the game in years but still made popcorn for this
damn that mass galley vs fewer turtle ships reminds me so much about Admiral Yi
So I just took a look at 16:45 and noticed something weird. You said you'd given the Celts an A, but you gave them an A+. That is all.
The reason that Koreans can see further than other civilizations is because they’re on roofs!
next time can you do the chinese overview?it's a very complex civ in my opinion and i want to know more about them.
It's out by now. You should watch the vid with subtitles, cause that one is not auto-generated.
You have probably the greatest intro ever.
