    Oh yeah. Top Gear used to be about Cars once. I forgot about that.

    Christ that pull away at 1.31 was nasty. Ride that clutch Mr Woollard.

      buck3366 I saw kwikfit following him with a new clutch 😂
      More like he was too scared shitless to unleash the beast haha

      In many circumstances the fastest way to get the best launch in a car like this is to partially slip the clutch. You have the best control over the power being fed to the wheels without bogging down, and you have minimal boost lag since you're so heavy with the right foot. However yes, of course it puts the most strain on the clutch to do it.

      The rear wing provides 45lbs of downward force? That's probably not much more than it weighs 😂

    Love the statement by Mansfield: Car in race form is expected to win championships at various international and national levels. Total, old school, no nonsense approach, not intended to appease anyone. That's what makes these cars and the people who made them legendary.

    Ah yes, the very first car to carry the famous Cossie "Whale tail" wing!
    The performance stats are respectable today so it must have seemed mental back in 1986!....And with minimal security equipment fitted as standard, a joy-riders wet dream! Ditto the Escort Cossie that followed it.

    They don’t make them like this anymore. Which is a shame ! Or am I just an old guy ?

    • @soundseeker63
      @soundseeker63 5 лет назад +10

      Even if they wanted to make cars like this again they couldn't.... A 150mph RWD "family" car with virtually no driver aids or safety equipment would be forbidden by the nanny state and all modern health and safety regs.

    Absolute classic. ♥️
    I wasn’t lucky enough to own one but did own a 1990 2wd 2.0 XR4i. (Limited run)

    • @paulthomson9709
      @paulthomson9709 5 лет назад

      2.0 xr4i? I thought they were all 2.8 v6s ?

    • @BionicRusty
      @BionicRusty 5 лет назад

      Paul Thomson. In 1988/90 they made a limited run of a badged DOHC 2.0L XR4i RWD. It was really just a badging exercise that should have had 125BHP. For some reason mine had 150BHP.😁 I think they made about 1,200.
      Wish I still had it.
      It mentions it here in the XR4 section

      150bhp? Who told you that? Look in the sales brochure,still the same 125bhp as the GLS and Ghia twin cams.

      I suggest you go watch a standard Mclaren F1 being put through its paces. ruclips.net/video/ZXN5VBLCOZw/видео.html Body roll in of itself is not necessarily a terrible thing, controlling weight transfer is the real issue for cars.

    The closest I ever got to this car, was a merkur xr4ti. I loved that car. Ford in its ultimate wisdom never sold the cossie here in the U.S.. The focus rs gets here late in life the only difference is the U.S. version came all wheel drive. But it to had a short life span, and now it too is gone. Wait! ford has the focus st in Europe, that wont cone to the U.S., and now there not going to make cars. Sheer geniuses at work. Where's the nearest Honda dealership at...

    150mph in 1986 ,unless you owned a Porsche or Ferrari ,back then in the UK no cop car could catch you, it's funny in 2019 I can now go out and literally pick from hundreds of cars that will go faster than this for a lot less money too, a good example ,Civic type R or Astra VXR very fast cars and on the used market can be had for under 5 grand

    • @rsingh4475
      @rsingh4475 3 года назад +1

      Yep I agree with you but back then where was those other makes of cars you mentioned no where! These cosworth's were ahead of its time I own one luv it ...

      @christineayres7094 3 года назад

      @@rsingh4475 Yes but don't forget the Astra GTE my dad owner a MK2 Astra and it was insanely fast for what it was ,handling was not good in corners though , just a shame most rusted away ,I remember my poor dad kept throwing cash at it to get welding done but eventually around 2005 he had to get rid of it and traded for a V6 Vectra not the new one but the older 1999 Vectra very quick top speed 😄👍

    I grew up with these and Japanese performance cars. To think a modern base spec Camry would destroy this or a turbo MR2, Sylvia, Skyline GTST, Mazda GTX etc is astonishing. Especially with no turbo, using a third of the fuel etc.

    • @Deanyfromtheburgh
      @Deanyfromtheburgh 2 года назад

      A base spec camry beat a cossie? You're delusional,and the rest of the cars you cited have a turbo. Garbage comment.
