  • FEAR on Saturday Night Live on Halloween 1981
Iconic punk rock brought to SNL by John Belushi. Slamming, Moshing, stage diving, and an (over exaggerated) destruction of the set. This is the performance that got Fear and Lee Ving banned from SNL.
    Songs include:
    "Beef Bologna"
"New York's Alright if You Like Saxophones"
    "Beef Bologna" lyrics:
    1234-1234!
She don't like fashions, she don't like phonies
She don't like junkies, she don't like druggies
She just wants my beef baloney
Beef, beef, beef, beef bologna [x4]
She don't like salami, she don't want pastrami
She don't want a chicken, she don't want a roast
She just wants her double dose of my
Beef, beef, beef, beef bologna [x3]
"New York's Alright if You Like Saxophones" lyrics:
New York's alright, New York's alright
New York's alright if you like saxophones
New York's alright if you wanna get pushed in front of the subway
New York's alright if you like tuberculosis
New York's alright if you like art and jazz
    New York's alright if you're a homosexual
New York's alright, New York's alright
New York's alright if you like saxophones
New York's alright if you like drunks in your doorway
New York's alright if you wanna freeze to death
New York's alright if you wanna get mugged or murdered
New York's alright if you like saxophones
New York's alright, New York's alright
New York's alright if you like saxophones

you asked if the crowd was fake or real? Well it all was real. In fact there was about $200,000 worth of damage and the cops got involved plus back then punk was a whole different kind of thing that wasn't tame unlike it is today.

What has always stood out the most to me in this video is the bassist, Derf Scratch playing the Sax... Having a saxophone in your mouth amongst all that chaos on stage is quite dangerous! Having someone slam into you and getting a mouthpiece/reed shoved into the back of your throat could easily "make it your final show" (...or maybe just lose a few teeth if you're lucky). 🎷 -Doc

The reason no one hit the lead singer is in punk rock hopping on the stage and diving off was common. So all of us learned that if you get on stage STAY AWAY FROM THE BAND!!! If someone hit the band or lead singer guess what happened - the show would stop and then the crowd would be pissed. Over time one of 2 things happened - either people stayed away from the singer OR they would get their asses kicked. This WAS real - John Belushi and FEAR went and gave tickets to the show to the local punks to come to have some "fun". In punk rock - it was not uncommon for the singer to take their shirts off - check out Henry Rollins in the "Slip it In" video. Heck, I was never cut but when you are in a club and it is over 100 outside and the place it packed you would swim in sweat. My shirt would get so wet I had to take it off. FYI - I started going to punk rock shows when I was 15 back in 1981.

Generally, most people learned not to hinder the band from playing, though fans tripping over mic/guitar cords was always far to common and ultimately has the same effect.
As for the fans at the SNL show, many of them were actually bused up to NYC from DC by the band. (Ian MacKaye from Minor Threat was one of 'em) -Doc

Sure, but they spit on their boots instead.
Spitting on the bands boots became a thing for a quick minute.
Seen them at a small club in Detroit years ago.
Lee got tired of getting spit on and kicked the dude in the face.
Only band eva perma banned from SNL

I'm fairly sure that show was in Long Beach back in '82. I was bummed that missed out on that show as I had not gotten to see either of those bands yet. Though I was able to catch FEAR quite a few times over the next couple of years (and a few more times with more recent lineups). Oingo Boingo though, I first saw them on TV (the Gong Show) back in '76, but didn't ever manage to get to see them live until the very last second... as I was able to catch their Halloween final show 😁 -Dr. Smith

This is harder to understand without the context of 1980’s punk - the NY punk scene had several experimental sax heavy bands that Fear is making fun of here, with their wandering sax and “NY’s alright if you like saxophones” sneer. They’re looking to start a fight.
