Maybe it's because he's always afraid that Robin stretches the boundaries too far and gets too profane and too vulgar and that it's not appropriate anymore for family entertainment where children are also watching. And maybe he's happy at those moments that Robin managed to stay within the boundaries and stretched it only that far that it wasn't too vulgar and acknowledged at the same time the great artist that Robin was to be able restrain himself and to be professional enough to dance skillfully on the rope between suitable for family and unclean jokes.

They unconsciously follow along with someone's movements particularly when they're doing something over the top or very funny like that. This is the first time I've seen someone on tv do that though. I watched that video a couple of times before you commented and I never even realized those head movements Johnny did. Because I was always sure that Johnny was a true gentleman and never behaved odd in his shows rather always was humble, gentle, polite, friendly, generous and humorous. A true gentleman. Like him I was always concerned that Robin gets crazy and becomes mentally ill. And that's no miracle because he was often intoxicated with some kinds of drugs or alcohol or both when he was in a show. So in all those videos where Robin does his standup routines or his free flowing spontaneous humour I always pay attention whether or not drugs or alcohol are involved in his ADHD like behaviour. With Robin you could never be sure but he was certainly often high or coked. So I always worried about Robin's mental health and I'm sure that Johnny did too because he was a caring man.
JOHNNY IS STILL THE BEST!! He let his guests talk, but when they got into trouble with conversation, Johnny would step in and rescue them from embarrassing silences. Johnny was Brilliant!!

I miss this era of television, as well as earlier, in the 1970's, with the Tonight Show as being a staple in our home, even though I was still young & had to go to bed early for school. But in the mid 1980's when the above video clip happened, I was a little more grown up so I could stay up a later a bit longer. My dad loved Johnny & Robin. As of the end of 2017, my Dad is now there with Johnny, Robin & Ed, wherever that may be, all happy to be talking amongst them.
Carson loved to have guests who could make him roar with laughter. Robin, Rickles, Rodney, Hackett, Carlin, Prior, then the new crowd. Seinfeld, Crystal, Ellen, Leno. He loved to laugh

I think Robin himself would be sad to hear you say that you can't enjoy his act without feeling sad. I choose to enjoy all of his performances that we have access to thanks to RUclips and other media, and leave it at that. cindyscott54 I don't know if it was the drugs, but he never gave anyone else a chance to talk or butted in, painful to watch sometimes. He was better at solo stand up comedy, he didn't have to be polite to other people.

I wish someone trusted sat Robin Williams down and convinced him it's okay to be yourself during interviews; that he doesn't need to be continually "on".

One of the most funny humans to have lived on this planet. I'm a huge fan and always will be. Sadly, there is a heavy spirit that now comes any time I see Robin. I can't say what he did was right or wrong. I'm not a judge and I didn't walk in his shoes. I can't help but feel sad at the same time I'm laughing. I don't think that will ever change for me. God bless you Robin Williams.
I think Robin himself would be sad to hear you say that you can't enjoy his act without feeling sad. I choose to enjoy all of his performances that we have access to thanks to RUclips and other media, and leave it at that. As long as we have these videos and happy memories of him, there's nothing to be sad about.
