How to replace Samsung washer clutch assembly part # DC97-16984A

- Step-by-step instructions on how to replace the clutch assembly on a Samsung washing machine. The clutch assembly in this video was stuck in place because corrosion on the clutch splines caused it to stick to the inner basket. We show tips on how to remove the clutch when it is stuck and won't come out easily.
The clutch assembly has internal bearings that the tub spins on. If the tub seal fails, it will leak water into the bearings and the bearings start to go bad. When the bearings inside the clutch fail it can cause the washer to get noisy or out of balance during the spin cycle. In some cases, it can cause rusty or greasy water to leak out of the bottom. These bearings and tub seal are not sold separately, so if they fail the clutch assembly will need to be replaced. The clutch assembly is also referred to by other manufacturers as a gearcase or a transmission.
The clutch assembly shown in this video is Part # DC97-16984A (PD00007252) but the instructions in the video apply to many different part numbers and models of Samsung washing machines.

This man is the great teacher that I have ever come across , well done.
Thank you!
Excellent video! I have this washer and have taken the tub out twice so far to clean it because of gunk build up on the bottom of the tub that eventually gets on our clothes. Now it's making a loud noise in spin cycle so I'm sure the bearings are gone. I had a hell of a time getting the tub out the first time due to corrosion on the shaft splines.
Thanks! That definitely sounds like bad bearings! Let us know how the repair goes for you.
17:16 This is the best instructional video I have seen on RUclips. Well done
Thank you! What kind of repair are you working on?
Just what I was looking for.
Thanks...👍🏼
Great!
Thank you so much for creating this video. I really loved it. You explained everything so patiently, step by step. Your delivery mechanism is just fantastic, couldn't get better than this. Keep up the good work and saving people lots of money!

Great 📹, very information and easy to follow along.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
Very informative thanks! And LOL that expression that you had when the tub won't come out! You should make a clip with all the bloopers and anger moments man for fun.
Haha! It's never fun when something doesn't come apart easily!
Thank you for the video.
Thank you for the great video ❤

Got a used set. When i went to run it thru with cleaner a bunch of gunk came into the tub. Ran it at least 8 times and still got gunk. Started tearing it apart and found your videos.
I took WD 40 and boiling water to it but still couldn't get the wash tub out. So we brought it outside, got a dryer cleaning brush, the hose and our shop vac. While the hose ran I shoved the brush in between the wash tub and the big tub, and scrubbed everywhere. So much gunk! Then we filled and sloshed the tub around and shop vacced again.
No more gunk!!!!
Nice job! Thanks for sharing!
@PartsDr I spoke too soon. Now I've got gritty gunk in the tub. I think all my scrubbing only loosened the gunk more. I have run vinegar through, used washer cleaner, and probably 15 empty wash loads in total. Still gritty gunk.
Guess I see if I can get it back outside and rubber mallet the clutch till it comes out.
Either way, I wouldn't have even gotten this far without you! Thank you for making these videos!
@@barbarac3971 Unfortunately, it sounds like it will probably need to be torn down completely to clean it out.
@PartsDr I have tried vinegar, Coca-Cola, WD 40, silicone lube, scrub daddy paste, boiling water, wire brush, rubber mallet; this thing won't come off! I am afraid if I turn it over and tear it apart from the bottom up, I'll end up having to replace the whole clutch, which I can't afford.
I've taken the garden hose and shoved it down in between the tub and the bin, and so much gunk still comes out. I keep vacuuming out the water, then do it again and still get more gunk.
I went to try and get a new nut and washer as this one was so nasty, but they wanted $45 just for that nut. So I soaked and scrubbed this one so it's at least clean when I put it back on....
I am giving up 😩
Hi thanks for the great video, My washer (Samsung - WA52M7750AV/A4) won't start spinning and it gives the error code: PC I'm having trouble figuring out if it's my clutch assembly or my clutch drain motor that is going bad. Is there a way to tell the difference between those two and which could be the issue? any tips or comments would really be appreciated, thanks again
Grt video it help full to me .
Great!
Thank you, I just made my order for that clutch Assembly, it is expensive.
Thank you for supporting us! Let us know how the repair goes for you.
thank you for the video. my washer Samsung model wa50m7450aw/a4 with error code PC according to the manual is for the clutch problem I just replaced it and still the same code PC please help me with what parts i should get if you can help me with the part # please. also my pump it is a little loud. thank you.
Great video..very informative. Where can I obtain the shirt your wearing?
Loved the video, and just purchased a clutch assembly from the website! Would you happen to know if this video would apply to a top load Samsung Washer model # WA50R5400AW/US02. Thank you!
Thank you! We don't have experience with your exact model washer but most Samsung top loading washers are very similar. Let us know how the repair goes for you.
Is there any way doing this replacement would cause the washer to not fill? Or can the inlet valve go bad from the washer sitting waiting on parts?
It would not be very common for the water valve to go bad while waiting for parts. First, we would check all of the wire connections to the water valve and main control board to make sure nothing is disconnected.
WHERE, did you get that cool tool to prop up the lid?
Hey Steve, here is a link to the prop tool: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EDEEOT2
Just wondering the part I’m looking for appears to be this but I don’t have no electrical connector so is it cool to just leave it there like it came and just put everything together? That’s the only thing messing me up also my model is slightly different lol I don’t have all that telsa looking stuff there mines newer I believe plus mine wasn’t transparent on top and I didn’t have to pull the tub out.. so I think I’m right??
What is the model number of your washer? ruclips.net/video/Lz1UsPC8lBU/видео.html
@@PartsDr Wa40j3000aw/a2
@@Stephentko Your model washer has the motor off to the side and a belt that connects it to the clutch instead of a rotor and stator. So on your model washer you won't have a rotor and stator to remove aka "that tesla looking stuff" 😂.
@@PartsDr So is that a yes it will work or a no cause the part number is exactly the same from the clutch assembly I pulled out..
@@Stephentko Your model washer uses part number DC97-16984B (PD00029202) for the clutch assembly. You can view that part here: partsdr.com/part/dc97-16984b-clutch-assembly
How do I know if the clutch is bad? My washer won’t spin and when I manually spin it I hear a metal scrapping/grinding sound. Washer is 1 year old just out of warranty
When the bearings in the clutch go bad, you will usually hear the washer start to get noisy during the spin cycle. You can also start to get some dirty greasy fluid leaking out of the bottom.
Sir where can buy samsung washer Sw65v5 transmission and how much. Thank you very much.
I'm sorry, we only sell parts for United States models. You will need to check for parts in your region.
Would this be true for Kenmore/Whirlpool?
Hi Pamela, the process for Kenmore/Whirlpool models with that have a gearcase is similar to what is show in this video.
Can you change the metal splines of the clutch without changing the clutch itself?
No you cannot. You would have to replace the clutch assembly.
@@PartsDr same thing for the agitator?
@@davidasselin6369 If the metal insert inside of the agitator (Samsung calls it a pulsator) is damaged or stripped out, the whole puslator assembly needs to be replaced. We have a video on that here: ruclips.net/video/QGCe-DFAu_o/видео.html
Why would you take the basket out ? You can do this repair with it still in the washer. Since the clutch will be replaced it shouldn't matter about damaging the shaft should it?
From our experience it is better to remove the inner basket. You can try to do it without removing it, but often you will spend more time fighting it than just removing it.
I can't seem to get the bowl out. I have used PB blaster to lose the gunk and still can't get it off any other ideas???
Pretty much all of our ideas were put into this video. They can be a real pain if they are badly corroded together.
You should always replace hub nut When replacing any transmission or clutch assembly on washer
Thanks for the advice!
Hi!
Is the part DC97-16984B similar to this part (DC97-16984A)? Can be substituted?
Those two part numbers are similar, but they are NOT interchangeable.
@@PartsDr thank you! Prices are a big difference.
@@santikzkz Order the correct one that fits your model number.
Trust me on this, just take that Samsung washer to the scrap yard and start looking at Craigslist for a whirlpool basic washer.
I'm not having a clutch issue but trying to get the inner tube out and I can get the nut off but it's not lifting I've been using wd40 for like two days. I don't know if I'm using enough but it's not budging. Any help is appreciated
Unfortunately, as we show in this video sometimes the corrosion between the clutch and tub can cause them to get stuck together and sometimes you can't get them removed without damaging something. The clutch may have to come out to get the inner tub out.
@@PartsDr thanks for the reply. Do you happen to know if there is anything else that would prevent the tub from releasing? Like a tube, wire, whatever?
@@williest Not that we know of. Most Samsung washers should be very similar to this video.
@@PartsDr damn I am having the same issue as Will E. I was hoping you'd say there was a method to remove without damaging something. All im trying to do is clean the tubs bc this pos washer keeps leaving flakes on my clothes. Any way glad I came across your videos they're better than all others I came across. THANKS
@@mantoniom55 I've had to take the tub out twice so far to clean the gunk out of it that was getting on our clothes and the first time I had a hell of a time getting that tub out due to corrosion on those splines. I'd advise spraying the shaft with wd40 or liquid wrench and go to lunch and come back in a few hours while that oil creeps down into those splines and it will come out.
How can I test this part before buying new one? My Samsung front load washer keeps slow spinning one way, then stops, then spins again and stops. Never a max spin. The timer goes down but never an error. Went down to 4 min left but stays there trying to get a spin.
Samsung WF50K7500av
We haven't seen a test for determining that the clutch is bad, but there are some things to look for. If the washer is louder than normal in the spin cycle, it is usually caused by bad bearings in the clutch assembly. If you see a brownish substance leaking from the bottom of the clutch, it is usually caused by a leaking tub seal that caused the bearing in the clutch to go bad. If the bearings fail, the washer will also not spin concentrically and the washer will get out of balance easily.
My washer makes a crrrr ("gear slipping noise) when on washing, on the end of the rotation(not the start. Waht could that be?
When the load is reduced e.g almost half load all sounds good and no noise
@@RudieGouws It sounds like the splines on the pulsator might be stripped. We would start by checking that first. We have a video on that part here: ruclips.net/video/QGCe-DFAu_o/видео.html
WA50M7450AW/A4 PC code came up... Do you have the Part? And how much is it 🤔 a GREAT INSTRUCTION VIDEO. 👍🏻 👌

I have a top load Samsung washing machine model number WA52J8700AW/A2 (02?). I need the clutch assembly but just the nylon part that is held in place by the 5 Philip head screws. I can only find the whole unit. Do you have an email that I could send you photos of what I have?
Hi Joshua, Samsung does not sell that part separately. You will have to buy the entire clutch assembly. This is the clutch for your model washer here: partsdr.com/part/dc97-18439a-clutch-assembly?model=WA52J8700AW---A2-02
@@PartsDr thank you. It was driving me crazy looking for this part or any information.
The nut won't come off stopping me from removing the drum. What now?
You will most likely need to cut a groove in the nut using a tool like a Dremel and a cutoff wheel. They will usually come off at that point, but if it is still stuck then cut a groove on the other side to cut the nut in half to remove it.
My model number is WA52J8700AP/A2-00 I can't seem to find a match on the site

Yeah skip the wooden block and hammer the s-h-i-t out of the shaft with a 3lb hammer. "bolt holes" 😂
great not even special tools were used like bearing puller.
I just want to take my tub out.. and apparently from the video I can't
😢
I have a quicker fix....junk it and buy a Whirlpool...done! 😆
That is what wives say not fixer uppers
Whirlpool just take the design and put they name on the unit so you could be getting a Samsung whirlpool
My whirlpool was much more difficult to work on than this used Samsung we just got! Plus, this one is much larger. I take this machine anyday!
