  • The first book review and discussion hosted here on Dear Fictioneer! The Eyre Affair is one of my most favourite books, so I was very privileged to share it with my lovely co-host, Greg. We read it together over the course of several months, and powered through to the finish line last weekend. We had very different feelings about it. This is not only a review, but a bit of an unbridled discussion. NO SPOILERS, we pinky swear.

What a great review/discussion. I love the way you bounce off of each other. It adds such a great quality to the review. It feels so much more exploratory which I don't see a lot, and I love it. I love hearing an actual discussion, it feels so authentic and just UGH I LOVE YOU GUYS.

OOPS FORGOT PART OF THE COMMENT. This book is four down on my to-read list. If the order doesn't change before I get there, I hope to have it read in a few weeks! :)

I'm almost CERTAIN you will enjoy it! Greg and I were commenting about how awesome it is that we both enjoyed the book while reading it (he didn't groan or complain during) but came away with very different feelings towards it. This book has a pretty nostalgic hold over me, so I'm sure that adds to my need to defend it! It's by no means high brow, but Greg is totally giving it a bad rap!
    (... don't tell him I said that)

Adding on! He's a very straightforward writer, there isn't a lot of stylising happening, but that doesn't mean he's a flat writer. Any time I see a name or form number in one of his books, I have to stop and think about it.. lest I miss a pun.

I'm so happy at the fact your opinions differ and you guys still respect each other!

Ugh! Yes, please, settle our bet! Haha. I'm convinced not having read it first was best, and Greg feels he would have enjoyed it more if he knew anything about Jane Eyre. I can't wait to hear how you like (or dislike) it!

Ugh, I am a bit of a brute when I disagree with someone! I'm glad you liked this style! As the editor it was difficult to make it "even" in showing reasons why I loved it and why Greg didn't. Maybe that just makes it a big mess of no-opinion, whoops!

I really liked this review and hearing your different sides! I haven't read Jane Eyre or The Eyre Affair, but I'd like to read both. The part with the worms and punctuation sounds like a really fun use of a book to make jokes, so I'd be interested to see what else Jasper Fforde has to offer in the book. I'm just a sucker for punctuation jokes!

I really enjoyed this review! I quite like that you both had different views, but you didn't descend into arguing haha. I've read 'Jane Eyre' and love it, and have been wanting to read this for a while. I hope I'll still enjoy it even though I've read the 'inspiration' material!

I have read The Eyre Affair and I had not read Jane Eyre. I have to agree with Jessica. It made the story more exciting. In fact I started reading Jane Eyre shortly after I finished Eyre Affair. Whilst reading The Eyre Affair, it felt slow and at times boring, but afterwards I remembered it fondly. I guess it was one of those books that I had to process for a little while in order to like it. I forget about it, but when someone mentions it, I want to pick up the sequel.

What a coincidence, he's MY bff too! I plan on advising him some time soon. Now that I've read Hitchhiker's, I can definitely see what caliber of writing resonated with him and how well he has done to sit in that echelon of witty thinkers.

I thought this book was crazy and it took me a 3rd of the way through to figure out what was going on. I almost put it down because it took some getting used to. I really enjoyed the book and the the authors efforts. I think I will read another of his books to see what happens. To run one author down doesn't make another author better it just makes them different.

Do you think you will try to continue with the Thursday Next series, or pick up Shades of Grey? I'm glad you were finally able to get through the Eyre Affair!

Personally I will HIGHLY recommend it ;) I'd love to hear what you thought of it! I guess I hadn't realized until reading it with Greg that some people wouldn't be as impressed with it!

Hahaha, trust me, we're happy about that too! ;) I think I can be a bit aggressive (assertive?) when I debate with people. It's nothing against them, debating and arguing is just fun to me ;P Greg is very respectful! He was also very tired :(
    Have you read this book?

That's so cool! So maybe you were more like Greg? He didn't dislike it, it just wasn't really his thing. And now I'm curious to see if he will do the same thing! Maybe because we read it together, or maybe because the book takes a while to take hold of you. I can't wait to read the sequel! I never have. I don't know if we will read it together, though ;p

I disagree with Greg! Haha. Jasper Fforde is my bff. He doesn't know, but he is. I think there is incredible depth to his writing, possibly in a different way than, say, Tolstoy or something. He's incredibly good at wordplay and puns and his character history goes pretty deep.
