    One of the versions of the Orpheus story is about him having to lead her out of the Underworld without looking back to see if she’s there, but he turns around towards the end because he thinks he’s being tricked and loses her again.
    Towards the end of the movie when he sees she was actually at his place and left the earring behind I felt like it was meant to mirror that moment. If he hadn’t have been so busy looking back in the machine, maybe he would have answered the door and they would have been reunited.
    Or maybe I’m just reading into it too much 😂

    The movie was beautiful and impressive, and it had some really interesting ideas, however, I feel that the world building elements of this film; the rising waters and the wars everyone talks about, and the struggles people went through past tense, would have been a much better aspect to present instead of this noir/romance rehash of China Town/Inception crossover. Also I don't know how anyone else felt about the dialogue but to me it was weird...like it didn't feel like humans talking, instead it felt like people speaking tediously. Almost poetically. Perhaps because we are viewing things from his memories and therefore everything feels "artificial" but it made it all feel very clunky and it was difficult for me to become invested.

    • @seismixx

    The biggest clue we were just watching his memories all along when he keeps seeing Mae in the water cause he knows she dies in the water after overdosing. He gets to see her in the current state of what he thinks she is after death. Just floating in the water. And when he tries to grab her she just disappears 🥲

    I love the movie. The acting is incredible and just hearing Hugh Jackman's voice gives me chills. I think it would have been better if Lisa Joy wouldn't have had to cut quite a bit from the film to make it fit for Warner and HBO, this is why people notice loose ends and maybe some unlogical twists. I hope there'll be a Director's Cut on a DVD so we can see it all as it was intended to be by Lisa Joy.

    • @josefinabalatbat122
      @josefinabalatbat122 3 года назад +2

      Exactly - a Directors Cut that will/might restore the heavy edits. The film was initially announced to end at 2hrs28 min...but was edited (presumably to fit in with the 2-hr screening rule). Will WarnerBros allow that Director's Cut? It famously denied Darren Aronoksky to make a Director's Cut for The Fountain ( now enjoying revisionist thinking).DA uploaded his own commentary instead. Hope WB be more generous when the home video is released!

    This was a great movie i don't understand the fuss. No sarcasm. Remember, recalling memories has a lot to do with details. So many scenes in the movie, randomly focus on tiny details. And then you find the character commenting on that small detail. Even though the memories are in first person, we sometimes get a glimpse of the full scene so we can perceive what was really going on.

    I thought the movie felt cliched and forced in the first 30 mins with lofty dialogues and expositions, and shallow, unrealistic world-building. Featured a commonplace talented, sexy but damaged damsel looking for a better life, one the protagonist falls for at first sight. It was trending to be a 4 but then it got progressively better, more layers were added to the story which took a few unexpected turns, and some of the things that felt banal in the beginning started to make sense and actually hit some emotional chords with me as it came to an end. I will give it a 6 maybe even a 7. The movie had some good ideas but the execution was largely lacking, a decent movie nonetheless.

    Passed this on Netflix a bunch of times then finally decided to watch it. I’m big into writing poetry in my free time so this movie was so compelling to me. The way the story he told , the one he ends in the middle, ties in with his tragic ending…it made me tear up. Fantastic movie on a somewhat basic premise.

    This was such a bad movie that wanted to be good.
    Joy is a good writer but she lost herself in this script.
    This feels like a series spec that was abandoned....like an outline offered to Netflix.
    She is obviously influenced by the Nolan's Big Meta Scripts......Dreams and Memory (Memento did it better).
    Many aspects broke the suspension of disbelief because they were so ridiculous....somewhat post apocalyptic yet with elegant high speed rail...et al.
    It feels like Joy sat down with a blank slate and wrote:
    "My mystery box idea for a sci fi Chinatown that will force the audience to Google Orpheus myth."

      Yes. This felt like a tv show that fell through (maybe too expensive?) and they tried to salvage it as a movie.
      So much potential. Would have made a great WestWorld type series.

    I didn’t like the ending because it’s a copout he was weak he would rather live in the past....I really think he never really loved her but an illusion of an illusion. Who wants to relive them same memories I mean how boring would that be day after day ...no the ending for me sucked

    How do people see themselves in their memories? Lisa Joy should have put way more time into her story than into silly effects that added absolutely nothing to a boring and silly story.

    I noticed when Watts visited Bannister, at the end of the movie, she, and he, seem strikingly unwrinkled for being as old as these characters were being portrayed. Was the movie implying they both had been genetically 'enhanced'; maybe, as a need, during their military service?

    You didn't mention how he found out she got into the safe, which was the first break in the case and was absolute utter nonsense. They spent 40 minutes telling us how the memory machine work and how you have to be aware to some extent of an event or at least be in your periphery, only to have him play the moment Mae stole the keys, from the mind of his partner while said partner WASNT EVEN IN THE ROOM when Mae stole them, she was in the bathroom drunk crying and staring at her daughter's photo. Its like he played CCTV on that machine instead of a memory but they forgot to tell us. So stupid.

    • @cesnav7593
      @cesnav7593 3 года назад +4

      It’s not nonsense, or stupid, you just missed it. When he’s talking to saint Joe, joe says she took my drugs/money, what did she take from you? Nick has no response, and Joe realizes Nick got played, and fell for her emotionally. That’s when later he’s talking to his partner, and he’s replaying memories to see what Mae “took” from him. That’s why he asks “we’re you with her the whole time?” That’s when he realizes the only thing she could’ve taken from him that was of any value, were the memory cards, which are in his safe. Of all his possessions, he only has one thing locked in a safe, and it’s those reminiscences.

    The ending of the movie elaborates on the holes in the movie. Idk why some of you expect to understand everything at every step of the movie. What would be the point of making it if you knew everything the whole way. You aren't supposed to understand until the end and you're supposed to use your brain, not to be spoonfed an explanation. Go watch a Disney animated film if that's what you're upset about. Again, great movie.

    movie seemed ok for me. all those years logan had to fight off other mutants has taken a toll on him it seems. his limp in this movie was quite noticeable, those mutants must of did a number on his leg. anyway maybe the movie will appeal more to the women due to the romance part of it. glad to see jackman back on the big screen again at least.
