I grew up in Sedgwick Ave and 197th st in the Bronx. As a kid, I walked the abandoned Polo Grounds tunnel to the Sedgwick terminus, then up to Van Cortland lake. I used to walk to the lake a lot and go fishing, never caught much but a book and a few sandwiches helped the summer days go by. I also walked the Put from Van Cortland up to Yonkers one day. Kinda how I spent my childhood as a teen in the late 80's early 90's.
We lived at 2757 Claflin Ave right around the corner gave up apartment in 1985
I remember when the tracks where still there in Van Cortland park before it turned into a walking path. I also enjoyed walking on the old branch that went to Getty Square. The bridge for the that branch still remains at the north end of the park where the field is. Over the Henry Hudson Parkway.
wow I use to play on those tracks and tunnels in the 80s
When I first moved to Riverdale in the Bronx I would explore the remains of the line through Van Cortdland Park. Was always surprised they closed that service considering the population of area.
People preferred the subway
When the 9th came down the through connection was lost. Now buses transverse the root
I wish they would reopen the Putnam Line
New York central did not care about the put
I remember the grade crossing in Elmsford over 119. Slow freight in the late 60s.
It's sad seeing the ruins of that station today.
Yes it is really really sad today the metro North has positive bass train control Right by the old sedwig old train station by the Highbridge yard
The Good thing that the Metro North has the positive train base control.
Riders preferred the one seat ride to GCT on the Harlem and Hudson lines. Put Riders had to change at HighBridge for a train to GCT.
Never had to be like thar
I have been watching documentaries about these train lines for the past several days now and I have learned a lot! As much as those train lines would have been very useful in today's world the subway trains were not compatible with the elevated tracks and they had to torn down I just believe that if they had waited and remodel the lines then the city would benefit big time but of course that would've taken allot more time and money 🙁
Fast forward to today. The "PUT" could have taken some of the load off the Hudson and Harlem Lines. And, if the NYW&B had been able to survive, it too would have taken some of the load off the Hudson and Harlem Lines as well as the New Haven Line.
Not sure if it would have really helped enough to be worth it. It was only single tracked, and not electrified. Also, the Harlem and Hudson lines aren't really overloaded either.
It hurts to know that the New York Central died too soon.
What goes around comes around God 🙏 sits high and look low.
They existed for over 100 years, hardly a short life.
They closed the put by purposely sending it into a downward spiral
yes i have been walking this old track section in van cortlandt since the late 60’s.
The rails have been removed and the right of way is now a hiking and bicycle trail.
They are definitely trying to bring both rails and trails together again just like Connecticut maybrook has rails and trails.
A fun fact (that probably no one cares about), the city contemplated shutting down part of the 1 train in the Bronx and rerouting it along the northern stub of the New York & Putnam in the early 1980s.
Thank God that the 1 trains are definitely still running. However they shut down the Putnam new York central rail road line in 1958. it's not the same with the Putnam trains anymore Alots of Abandoned Rail road trains are definitely coming back to life across the country's. No other Rail road s cannot replace the old Putnam Rail road trains.
I don't care how much they put the pave trailer and bikes that s is fine. Something is coming back I'm telling you it may be a while I have a spiritual feeling .
@@leecornwell1062 Unfortunately, Wassaic is as far as the Harlem Line will go. The right of way between Wassaic and Chatham is now a rail trail. Had NYS prevented CONRAIL from pulling up the rails, there might have been a chance; that no longer exists. The Putnam Division has been obliterated. The NYW&B beyond Dyre Ave. has been obliterated. Story book is closed.
That line wouldn't have survived into the Metro North Era,because iironically the roadway right beside that line The Deagan Expressway
Sounds like they definitely overlayed audio/stock sounds over the original video, bleh - even if that is true though, still cool seeing the Put in operation.
I wish i could see the putmam trains but i still see the old vancortlant old putmam train station still remaining
And the trestle is still remaining also you could still see some old Track ties on the trestle and ground to as you ride up further look to your left you will also see the 10 stones is still remaining you will see old Track ties as you ride your bike on the Putnam trailer
A lots of people are picking up on the old Putnam Rail road trains as well
It's "CAR-mull"not caramel!
😆🤣😂😄
Some of those dubbed in SFX the people who produced that tape added are rather poorly done haha
