The Franklin Park Zoo originally opened in the 1800's but the zoo portion wasn't added until 1912. One of the main attractions at the zoo was the large bear enclosures. In the 1950's the bear enclosures became to expensive to maintain and ended up closing in 1954. Rather then spend money to demolish the old habitats, the city of Boston decided to jut leave them to rot away in the woods...
In 2003 the old Franklin Park Zoo bear cages were used as a filming location for the film Mystic River which was directed by Clint Eastwood and starred Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon.

Happiness and Sweet Tea yeah I can’t believe that it is just sitting there in the woods like that. Whats weird is there’s a major road right behind the bear pens and the new zoo is just down the street. I’m surprised they didn’t repurpose the cages. Thank you :)
@@BenLaurence Just visited the zoo today, it still encompasses so much space. When folks decided they needed to set bounds on the zoo and collect entrance fees, then these old spaces just ended up outside what they could manage. And zoo keeping etiquette has changed so much. How you keep and manage animals and so forth. Found one article mentioning it opened with 12 bears or a few different species. Those kinds of numbers are ridiculous for a modern zoo.
Yeah zoos have definitely changed a lot since this place was open!
Its so cool, There are many ruins around that park. I use to go to the park everyday as a kid. Planning a photoshoot there.
That kinda looks like the 1920s version of the old section of the Los Angeles zoo but without the bear enclosures it was mainly appearing to be just an array of cages

Dang the Franklin Park Zoo . Brings back memories of my old school days , did a horrible video here back in 2012. The movie you mentioned was also directed by Clint Eastwood but not called Mystic Point , it was mystic river .

I remember going to this zoo, I don't know much of what it looked like when it was open bc it was a long time ago. Interesting to see what it has turned into now in August 2018! I liked that part when Stanley did that Madagascar scene XD!
This area closed down in 1954 so I’m not quite sure you remember it 😂😂 gotta love Stanley shenanigan

Very nice video! Thanks for staying up all night getting the video ready for us to watch! It’s pretty amazing seeing places like this where at one time there was actually bears there! Especially from that long ago. It is sad that it closed down. But it is understandable since the upkeep was getting too expensive. But I am glad to see that there are reminiscences left. Hope you got some sleep! Thanks for sharing this journey with us!
Thanks Janet! It wasn’t fun staying up all night but I think this video was worth it because it’s such an awesome spot! Like I was saying, just taking a second to realize that bears used to live where I was standing is so crazy! I believe the bears were moved to the new zoo when this part closed. Lol I literally just woke up 😆 thanks for coming along on the adventure!!

maybe the bigger pen was for brown bears because they are bigger and maybe that pen that was next to the big one was a holding place for the bears if the pen was being cleaned.and maybe that other smaller pen was for black bears because they are a bit smaller
Yeah that’s actually quite possible! They must have been for different types of bears. Or maybe even to separate bears that didn’t get a long (yes I know that sounds ridiculous but some zoos do that)

I went inside that bear building through those holes 20 years ago. Actually kind of big inside and full of dirty magazines and a homeless camp. Its was gross but cool.

this zoo is younger then the first zoo.... im just got my first vist on the first zoo when i was young but theres a event called china lights in december before christmas i would beg my mom that i can go to the first zoo to see every lights of the event: china lights

There's a park in the town that I live in that used to have a zoo in it that has since been closed and mostly demolished. I read about it in a newspaper article several years ago that said that you can still find peices of fence gates and bars there. I was intrigued, so went there to explore it, but all I could find besides some rock walls was a rusted peice of what I assumed was a hinge sticking out of a small piece of one rock wall pillar that was by itself among some young trees. I was disappointed I couldn't find more, but maybe that WAS the gate bars the article mentioned. Nothing as obvious as in this video.
Yeah the architecture here is great!! Exploring places like this is really cool, I love seeing whats left behind

Lmfao "feeding stations". They're to protect trees that are growing inside the enclosures, also to ensure the animals weren't able to climb the trees.

Im sorry i missed this when it came out.... i was so busy but the video was really cool. I chuckled when stanley Said it was for the lion in madagascar. What type of feeling did you get while you were here? Fear? Sadness? Peranoid? I would of been amazed if i went into an abandoned bear cage. I wonder what water or what that liquid in that tree stump.and from a distance the window where u were standing on a rock it looked like a person. The dens look like a prison cell in a way.... i love in a weird way how this zoo is abandoned... if i were to have a bad day i would go to an abandoned place like this just so i could like mess around and see what i could find.

It makes me wonder what will happen to the old park in the future, whether they'll reuse the section of the park, tear it down for something else, or just continue to leave it be.
ray dude thank man! I’m not quite sure if they have any future plans for the area... it looks like thy are turning the surrounding areas into a nice park so these cages may disappear in the future :(

By the way the Boston hockey team is the Bruins which is a name for a bear.
And now ... Back in the day care was not given as they were today. They separated males and females amd sometimes even ones they feared to be mean. That might be why it has several pens as the enclosure does.

This reminds me of the park near me,they use to have this tunnel and two rusty doors on two sides of it near the exit.
Back in the 90's there use to be bears in there,once the city found out they endded up removing them..no one knew what the bears were for or why they were kept in a small enclosure where no one could see them.
The doors didnt have windows either and were bolted shut hardcore,its still strange to think about.
And no its not a animal park,theres only a few enclosures but its in a chainlink fence..they endded up getting another charge back in 2010 cause they were starving and dehydrating the donkeys (thanks to my mom they are free and happy and healthy.)
They even have these bulls or what have you..theyve never renewed the chainlimk fence and theres a sign that said not to interact (it was on a heavy incline,the only time they came up was around 2008 when i was a kid.)
Finally the park got another lawsuit for the deer they had because they wouldnt give them good water but yet took good care of the cows they had just two feet near by

Franklin Park runs a long way shit I be 40 year's old on Halloween and I been to other areas of Franklin Park , oh boy I NEVER seen this part in my life 👀👀👀im literally gonna go search for this area 😳😳, and I'm literally like 10 Min walk from the back of Franklin Park the golf course area I got a long way to walk 🕵️🕵️🕵️so many secret hidden spots in that park also it's haunted! From hangings to rape. Finding dead bodies it's crazy , just this past summer 2019 a lady was giving her a birthday cookout Party and looked at a certain bush smoking , it was a Fucking dead body on fire ! Everyone at her party scream and ran , next thing police ,news, fire trucks came and this is literally only like almost 3 in the afternoon on hot summer day ! 🗣️🗣️🗣️Every state every part of this world have their own horror haunting true tales 😔😔😔so crazy
