In fact, it's really interesting to have these conversations and hear all your opinions on sites like Temu etc, and how those opinions impact your purchasing decisions!
We've generally got more choice now than ever before on what we buy and where we buy it from, so it's amazing to see your thoughts, and we should continue to have conversations about it.
Even though you are not actively doing a promotion the video still promotes Temu and its products. I can imagine that you are role models to many people and they will still buy the products you find useful.
No matter how much you deny it, it *is* a promo for t*mu.
As I mention in my comment, you could seriously have been clearer on that part since you don't mention how Temu isn't a place where you should shop, escpecially considering you feel the need to make a disclaimer in the comments. This video goes against everything you've been saying for years about sustainability, supporting the workers/farmers and so on, it goes directly against what Sorted stands for.

Didn't they make a video around Christmas, of James standing behind the door with a bunch of signs asking can he come back a bit? He might not be here permanently, but for me that seemed like it's not just an day or two worth of filming either.

My brother was an Executive Chef. The cooking test he had to get hired as a cook was to make an over ease egg. Just think of James freaking out because he would not make the cut for a cooks postion.
I was a line cook in a restaurant that did weekend brunch. I had to cook eggs in front of customers about once a month. It was nerve wracking. There was always someone who'd ask for over easy or sunny side up when it was already busy.

as a person that deseeds about 4 pomegranates a week for work
we also break it into segments [with a knife, not barbarically like james did], and then we submerge it under water in a bowl, and deseed it while submerged
so the juice doesn't get everywhere, and the pith floats to the top so you can take it out easily

Yes. You cut the top, score down the sides where the white pith meets the edge. Then pull apart and deseed. I just do in a deep bowl.
Yup. this is the way i do it. a bucket full at a time in front of the tv when the tree all comes ripe at once!

It would be cool to see some sustainable kitchen solutions like silicon lids, beeswax cloth, etc. But also really test them through multiple days or uses

silicon in contrast to pe or other plastics isn't recycable so even worse for the environment than normal plastic once it breaks.
@@betaich Recycling is a scam. most plastics can't be recycled and if the paper recycle is dirty it can't get recycle. It's a system that only around to make people feel good. Go look up videos titled Recycle is a Scam.
Silicon stuff gets super sticky and disgusting after a few months. Makes no difference if it's cheap or extremely expensive.
They did this a couple years ago with sustainable alternatives to single use plastics
Can we get "you've been doing it wrong all along" hacks? Splitting a pomegranate into wedges, cutting a mango with a glass, peeling ginger with a spoon, dicing avocado with a wire rack, juicing citrus with a fork, opening a banana from the bottom, shredding meat with a mixer, and a whole host of other hacks that may or may not work.

I defy anyone to have an issue with the bottom opened banana. I was a bioengineering student and for a project about biological material sciences I tested it takes less than 2/3 the energy and results in more intact edible flesh on ripe bananas (and underripe bananas if the person consuming it refuses to eat the vascular tissue at the bottom of a traditionally opened banana which is removed with the peel with the bottom up method, otherwise there is no discernible difference for under-ripe banana flesh yields)
And yes I did site my own paper as a source when I was a culinary student for a proheject in optimalt yield preparation methods, sue me I was the only one (that I could find anyway) who had written a paper on it and I passed review with it even tho it wasn't published in a journal (like what kind of journal would publish something like that lol)
Pretty sure they've done videos like this. I remember seeing gadget vs no gadget videos and most the no gadget ones were what tiktok claims are "hacks"
Also, most the stuff you mentioned (except mango, since we didn't eat them) my mom taught me when I was a kid and I'm 40

Temu are marketing geniuses. They've successfully convinced the population that if you buy from Temu you'll make great savings on products that are 'good enough'. The reality though is you'll overpay for rubbish more often than not. Just look at how the guys underestimated the price on every product.
The psychology of justifying your past purchasing decisions then means that purchasers keep going back because they don't want to admit that the crap product that broke or they only ever used once, was an outlier, and they can't pass up this next great deal.
They use all the tricks from the marketing dark patterns books.
The low prices are one too.

FYI, the duck isn't food safe. Barry was right, it's meant for the beach and listings on other websites list it as a kids toy for use in the snow. If the potatoes were sufficiently hot the plastic would've started to melt; even on this side of the screen I can tell it's that awfully flimsy Poundshop plastic.
My thoughts exactly. Its pretty clearly a beach toy that people used for food. Which is so not a good thing.

The incorporated portion will be all the chemicals leached by the non-food grade plastic (it's genuinely a beach toy and is not made of food safe plastics)

I love Alton Browns technique for Pomegranate. Do it in a bowl of water! Seeds will sink, pith will float, and any burst arils will just be part of the water and not make your hand sticky
I've always seen the break it into segments version done without cutting it in half. There's some way to look at the stem to see where to score with a knife to pull it apart into wedges.
@@adde9506if you score a pentagon around the top stem, you can kind of see where the corners of the pom are looking down from the top, then you just pop out the stem and it reveals the segments nicely
Never buy kitchen stuff from random sellers, you never know how food safe those things are!
You all need to substitute James in for Captain America when he rips apart a piece of wood but instead of wood...it's a pomegranate.
I would not trust any of these products to be food safe.
I love that James feels defeated by £2.38 gadget that actually worked and helped him improve his result.
I'm not trusting anything from Temu to be foodsafe. Also, you can shred chicken with a handmixer. It's surprisingly effective.
I'm severely disappointed that you didn't point out the dangers of shopping on Temu.
- It's Wish all over again with terrible sweatshops, where the workers aren't treated even remotely like human beings. Despicably low wages, inhumane work environments; temperatures, same position hours on end, no breaks and long shifts.
- It's Wish all over again in regards to chemicals used to created the products as well as pollution. Chemicals which also seriously harm the workers, no proper safety wear, ventilation and so on.
- Your information gets sold to absolutely everyone who're willing to pay. People have been scammed so hard after shopping on Temu since their credit card info was stolen.
Considering how important it is for you that food and ingredients are sourced locally (at least you mention it a lot) I truly find it odd, how you've not even mentioned it during this episode, how all of Temu's products are shipped all the way across the world. And how so much of it ends up directly into landfills.
As someone who's watched your channel for years and I love it when you do reviews. I truly could not find it in myself to like this episode since you don't mention the dangers of Temu, rather, you're basically promoting it, along with the whole concept of not treating workers with decent humanity. Which is something I truly cannot and will not support.
Though RUclips doesn't show it, I down voted the video, the first ever down vote I've given to you guys.
I hope if we ever get another episode like this, either with Temu products or another shops things, that you at the very least mention, not only the risks for the buyers (your viewers) but also how the prodcts are made (in inhumane sweatshops) that way it at least won't feel like you're promoting something as awfull as this.
Plus they're spamming ads everywhere with their stolen cloned products so it's getting really hard to find the original versions that western companies put effort and money in designing.
👏🏼 even if it’s not the intention, videos like this just promote Temu and keep it at the forefront of people’s minds.
This was my first downvote too. We've watched at home for years, bought books and subscriptions, but... the lack of awareness and good judgment on this feels like a major failure. Especially with Ebbers' usual environmental consciousness, all that channel talk about sustainability, about fair labor practices... and then they green light this mess?

My family has used the duck mould for the last two winters and it has been a big hit for the kids, but especially the adults. This past winter, someone (not a member of my family) left rows of snow ducks all over downtown Toronto whenever it snowed. It's wonderful!
I'm very certain none of the plastics TEMU sellers use are food safe.
Most plastics are food safe. Does "certain" mean you have analyzed the plastics and found unsafe versions of PVC or BPA infused plastics? PET and HDPE are the most common and they are cheap and readily available for all manufacturers
@@sirbixalot73 Pure theoretical versions of those plastics, sure. Those used in Chinese factories where pollution is just a funny foreign word, not so much.
@@sirbixalot73Sadly mystery fillers and additives are even cheaper. It's also why I don't buy cheap metal baking tools anymore. There was quite the scandal in my country with stuff sold at the equivalent of the dollar store that was saturated with heavy metals. Lead and other fun stuff transfer into your baked food during the baking process.

Methinks they never really changed, just changed names.
I think it needs to be mentioned that Temu isn't under regulation or rules of materials in their plastic.
A lot of the stuff targeted to kids are not food safe (after EU standard)
Sustainably and no excessive waste should apply to all products in use. Don't forget the excess shipping or air miles all these products are doing from single orders. Even all the excess packaging waste that is created from these sites is really something to think about.
I hope whichever restaurant James works at appreciates him, cos we miss him! (And yes I am aware I am saying we miss him while he is here, but you know what I mean, when he is gone... haha)

As someone from Hong Kong, I would add that products from sites like Temu where products are sold directly from Chinese manufacturers can definitely be of dubious quality. There are many types of plastic that begin to leech into food under heat or acid, and electrical components may not be properly constructed to avoid electrocution. While China has become a more reliable manufacturer, there are definitely still a lot of small sellers who will try to take advantage of cheap production to turn a quick profit, and I would not buy anything (especially for food use) that I cannot reliably verify is not dangerous. Its one thing to buy a cheap toy that breaks easily, its another to use it to make food.
Chances are you'l be fine, but be extra careful of products that are especially cheap or look like they are not well designed. The duck shaper and meat shredder in this video especially look dubious in their quality. A couple of injection molded components isn't that expensive to mass produce and not every listing will be made of food safe materials.
Stay safe in your shopping, and maintain a healthy level of skepticism.
Do not use TEMU.

Honestly, I bought that grip and flip spatula a few months ago and I love it. I have hand tremors so it really helps me get a better grip on foods to flip them over without stuff just falling off the spatula. And yes, it's great for flipping fried eggs. Just takes a little practice.

I have been a fan for years now and I find it an absokute disgrace that you guys are supporting something like Temu especially in a food related format. Beside the fact that Temu likely supports child labour and does not care about labour rights in general, it has been proven that Temu products can contain a lot of harmful chemicals! I would never let something from Temu, especially made from plastics, near my food!
The way Barry immediately knew what the shredder was for but was kind of careful in how he talked about it really lets you know he has smoked some weed. That thing is just a giant grinder.
A shredder is not some sort of secret device. They just don't want to get demonitized.

On a serious note: Temu plastic items have been tested in objective safety laboratory in FInland and found multiple hazardous chemicals in them. You advertize in the beginning that the duck mold would suit for kids! It's just irresponsible to try to bring temy or other rubbish item producers to light, because they have absolutely no regard for item safety. I would never buy anytihng from there because they are indeed confirmed to contain poisons.
And so what? Nobody would buy this shit and furthermore I can tell you aren't a regular as the duck thingy was clearly a "joke" it's not advertising... But in general for kids (propper ones)

@@ishan_singh they are similar to wish. They claim to be slightly better because they ship from America. They pay fair wages. But,that is what they claim.
@@ishan_singh forced unpaid labour in very dangerous places to start with, they also steal and sell all the data, sometimes including bank details. They do not have the right listings on products, meaning they might contain toxic chemicals without you knowing, and the whole ethical debate on waste is also a big thing, which don't only concern Temu but a lot of fast fashion/ big waste brands and products.

James was making comments to it, but to be clear this is almost assuredly not food-grade plastic for $2 and some change USD. Then you add in that people will want to use it on various hot foods like rice, mashed potato, etc. and yeah - I'd be VERY worried about plastics leeching into my food.
It's good for a laugh, but I'd not suggest anyone use one of these unless they see actual data from the mfr vouching for the quality of the plastic.
I don't know what everyone always has to hate about the quality of Temu or Wish, the little kids and the forced laborers really make an effort

Purée food for seniors with swallowing issues have been put in molds in order for them to recognize them One green blob of pea purée can be shaped to look like a pile of peas. So making food fun or recognizable helps all ages.

I feel like more of a disclaimer or discussion about Temu should have been had in this video. I was genuinely surprised to see you give a company like Temu any screen team considering ethically it goes against everything the Sorted team stands for. Yes it's not an add, but you still supported them by purchasing their products and giving them attention without addressing the issues behind the company. I hope you consider adding a disclaimer to the video in the least, especially seeing as you brought up the issue in the comments.

I was really disappointed to make it halfway through without even a second glance from the Sorted crew at the abysmal actions behind titans like TEMU and Wish, Shein and more.
They did it because their Audience asked them too in such numbers they could not be ignored. If their viewers did not suggest such things so often then they probably would not have bothered.

i know this is meant to be a light hearted video and i don't want to come across as hateful at all because i love everything you at sorted food stand for and i think that's whats upsetting about the video testing products. i know sorted strive for sustainability and food waste which is the opposite of what temu promotes (mass consumerism, cheap unsustainable hazardous products and most likely slave labour). I really don't hate you lot personally for this and will continue to watch you guys forever but I do hope you become more mindful of buying and producing content of products like temu. Even tho this isn't an advertisement, it still is partly promoting and spreading the company. again I absolutely this channel and will continue to watch you but I genuinely think you are slightly in the wrong on this particular occasion

It's impossible to use most digital devices without supporting some form of slave labour because of certain required parts/materials that ONLY exist/are created in specific countries with no/bad labour laws.

I've watched every Sorted video for years, but I'll be skipping this one. I'm disappointed that you guys are supporting Temu. It may not be a paid sponsorship, but you are still promoting them and you are supporting them by giving them your business.
Temu is everything than Sorted isn't and it's hugely disappointing that you haven't thought this video through. You've not considered how this would be received by your viewers and subscribers.
I've unsubscribed from other channels for taking paid sponsorships from Temu in the past. If i see any more Temu content here then sadly Sorted will be next.

James describing his sous chef teaching him to flip eggs in America, never have I so related with one of the Sorted chefs. I worked for a decade in a grocery store deli and one year we started to offer breakfast. My department manager gave me a frying pan BIG ENOUGH FOR A SINGLE EGG and had me stand there cooking and flipping dozens and dozens of eggs trying to catch the damn things. Very few made it into the pan, some hit the surface of the gas grill, some slid INTO the grill! Thankfully soon after they had us start doing the eggs on the giant flat top with everything else! I can still remember her telling me I was going to learn how to do this no matter how many eggs it took.

Another channel I love (not) promoting Temu, I know this isn't an ad but it really needs to be made clear that Temu's pricing is entirely designed to price gauge the market, and is supported by extremely intrusive and spyware levels of cookies and advertising. Please don't follow this up with videos about Temu, wish, or similar companies. Buying rubbish gadgets is one thing, but this is not the way to do it.

You can't say this isn't a promo video for temu. You're on the Internet too, you know what kind of company it is. What even was the point? You don't need to have conversations about temu with us, as you're written in your pinned post. People who make videos on companies like temu research the topic without buying any of their cr@p. Everyone was okay with you not getting involved in this. It's just weird. There's no need stick your nose in negative things that will bring you criticism.

The meat shredder looks like a couple of folk looked at their herb grinder when they had the munchies & though "I know!" As useless as it looked I think it would have shredded warm/hot meat better than cold. The fibres are always easier to part when warm.

With the noodle press I've seen them made from wood/bamboo with a hand crank and it worked really good.
I've seen the duck press work with glutinous rice and fresh snow. I also have seen a video where an old guy cut the bottom flower bit off of a pomegranate then peal down the sides like you can do with on orange and it exposed the pomegranate berries and he could get them out like an orange wedge.
I feel so attacked right now. I'm sitting here, eating temu-duck-shaped ice cream, because I don't have an ice cream scooper. *sad quack*

The Temu debate is a sad one, the team could easily have titled this exact video "Chef reviews silly Kitchen gadgets" and we would have loved it just the same. But featuring Temu in the title, and indeed thumbnail, probably feeds the algorithm and generates engagement. Such is the algorithm beast.....

For pomegranates! I score them with a paring knife and then split in half vertically. I work in a large bowl of water to remove the seeds. The arils or “jewels” sink to the bottom while the pith floats. Makes it easy parse out any small bits that make their way in while I work.
everything Temu sells is made from horrible cheap plastic, I would rather pay more for utensils made with our rules and regulations. plus everything breaks so quickly.

James at freakin reviews done the meat shredder and it works perfectly when you use it right. Put the grips top and bottom keep your hands on each handle and go back and forth. It's done in no time 😂.

I've actually got a meat shredder similar to that. Fortunately it wasn't from TEMU, so it wasn't cheaply produced trash. It actually does its job and shreds chicken pretty easily.
I’ve had a grip and flip in my kitchen for 20 years. It’s handy af for eggs, grilled cheese and such.
