  • A wonderful assault on the ears, Lou Reed plays some delicious/vicious guitar here, from the gig apparently recorded through his amp. He really is on fire here !
From the Boston Tea Party gig, 15th March 1969.

I could listen to that guitar screaming forever, to my ears, it's just like bees buzzing around flowers in a fair wind, on a warm summer day.

I love how Lou's guitar gets distorted all over the place near the end; like how the technology of the day couldn't even come close to keeping up with him. Truly a band ahead of their time in many ways.

Over time, I have come to consider this rendition (with Lou's mold-shattering guitar solo) the single greatest recorded live musical performance of the rock era, if not of late 20th century music in all of its forms.
Okay, nothing probably ever topped John Coltrane's 1965 performances in Paris, but come on, this one is not *that* far behind.

I will never forget the beat up Peel Slowly And See CD boxset I got from a local library during my college years. One very late night I finally got around to White Light/White Heat. I was kind of nervous to listen to 'Sister Ray' because I had no experience with anything noisy or experimental and didn't know what to expect. I hadn't even done drugs yet, let alone smoked a cigarette.
What was it like? It was fucking awesome.
This live version is getting me close to that same feeling again.

This version of the recording has the beginning of edited. Heroin preceds it -- they did heroin and then immediately did Sister Ray. This recording is from the box set, "Boston Tea Party 1969". The transition between Heroin and Sister Ray was digitally smoothed over. The Nothing Songs release of "The Legendary Guitar Amp Tape" is the definitive incarnation of this recording. No edits. PM me if you need bootlegs.

I respect some of his picks like Blonde on blonde, The Sinner Lady, Astral Weeks, Rock Bottom, Velvet, The Doors... He said is the masterpiece of rock history, not of all the music of the century and all the genres. He said probably at the height of Beethoven's symphonies, I think that's a stupid thing to say by him, the different art forms can't compare, he just says that thing to feel cool and feeding his own ego and he has a lot trust me. And still I consider him one of the best music critics out there, but his ego fails sometimes.
