Definetely NO thin voice - are You serious??? There are very few tenor voices with such richness in sound! And even fewer in the Rossini repertoire!BRAVO MAESTRO ARAIZA!
Francisco shows the world "How it should be done !" Every tenor in the world should listen to this over and over and watch how he sings. Simply amazing !
It's incredible the way this great mexican tenor interprets Rossini. He always sings keeping the same color in his voice(low & high). And he shows a perfect singing line while he reaches the high C. Most tenors are afraid of singing this very dificult piece and hold the high C just for a second. Araiza holds it without panic and with full virile voice. Just amaizing !!
Came across this by accident Monday April 27th 2020 in the middle of lockdown due to Covid 19 killer virus. Simply mesmerising! Tempo and wonderful tenor make it pure Rossini. A mental lift just when it was needed.
I admire him immensely for singing at the tempo he does, which taxes his breath control to the fullest extent and yet he came through it with FLYING COLOURS! His use of dynamics was also beautiful and a perfect top D! Bravo Araiza! It is very apparent that the Spanish-speaking countries have a claim to the exclusivity of the best tenors at the moment!
Very good Araiza, but you have not heard so many other versions (Björling, Baum, Bonisolli, Cecchele and so forth). There is not any best, but great versions. Sincerely,
BRAVO!!! UNIQUE! ... one of the very few Tenors (Aragall and Kraus are other examples) able to modulate not only his volume as the Belcanto dictates (Ref. Messa di Voce) but also his vibrato (in frequency and in combination with volume!!!) giving his renditions a special beauty and expressiveness otherwise not achieved. He resembles a great painter with an own painting technique.
SUBLIME! wonderful dynamic and Tempo! only possible for Artists like Abbado and Araiza. What a D-flatt!! like trumpet but with body resonance and the final piano phrase!!! after over 30 Years there has been no better interpretation than this one! BRAVI!
What a wonderful performance. I had the chance to hear him singing in Mexico City's impressive Opera House many years ago ( mid 80's ) and he brought the house down with his portentous voice. One of the most memorable opera performances of all times there and many other places I've been throughout my life. Thanks to youtube, now we can enjoy such a wonderful voice. Thank you maestro Araiza for the memories.
Viva Zapata. Fantastic voice ! Where did he dissappear to ? Yes comparable ot to Giggli, Bjeorling, Di Stefano and Paveroti. Mervelloso Francisco. Netanel
@Pawelp Actually Araiza began as a bass-baritone! Read Hines' book. He became the premiere Mozart/Rossini in the world but later tried spinto. I think he also did Lohengrin. In the theater his voice had color and size - something missing from Florez in a similar fach. A very great singer indeed.
Thanks for your comment!! I agree with you, this master piece shine much more while sung in fullvoice. I checked the score and the Key for this "cujus animam" is A flat, which means that the high note at the end is a D flat(equivalent of C#).
This performance is froma Rossini concert that included Caballe, Horne, Lind, Ramey, and others. as far as I can tell the man in the chair is to represent Rossini. (I think lol.)
Listening to this makes one want to convert to Catholicism! Exquisite performance aside, let's not forget to mention one VERY important thing, the unequaled, masterful conducting of Claudio Abbado. Hell, I'd take him over Muti anytime.
The weight of critical opinion favours Jussi Bjorling (who else?) as having made the best recording of this taxing piece. Is it heresy to say that Araiza even surpasses that legendary performer? His tone quality, his breath control and his brilliant top notes make this a wonderful recording.
Listen please to Il Mio Tesoro by Luigi Alva in Aix in 1971. Summa elegantia and frassing. Nevertheless, Bjoerling and Araiza here are in the same step
Why didn't this guy record the Rossini Otello? There aren't that many around who could do so. BTW did you know that he started as a bass-baritone. It's in Hines book.
Lyric: Cuius animam gementem, Contristatam et dolentem Pertransivit gladius. Hi, which variation rings more authentic to you, "contristantem" (the present participle" or "contristatam" (the past participle)?
the actor playing Rossini is Paul Brooke. this is an excerpt from a 1985 show "Rossini at Versailles". In the show it is a gala performance in Rossini's honor. Rossini had "retired" from composing professionally in 1829 and left Paris to return to Bologna that year. with the death of his wife in 1845 and political disturbances also occurring, he left Bologna for Florence in 1848. in 1855 he returned to settle permanently is Paris where he hosted many artists and literary figures. he was also a a well known gourmand and an excellent amateur chef his entire life, and he indulged these two passions fully once he retired from composing. During his later years Rossini also suffered from a series of physical and mental illnesses (it is believed he suffered from Bipolar Disorder - he was known to be an extremely rapid composer, sometimes composing the overture to an opera the day of its premiere, and then have periods of long depressions). it was during this time he composed the Stabat Mater, begun in 1832 and completed in 1841. in his later years he slowly returned to music, composing obscure little works intended for private performance. These included his Péchés de vieillesse ("Sins of Old Age"), which are grouped into 14 volumes, mostly for solo piano, occasionally for voice and various chamber ensembles. Often whimsical, these pieces display Rossini's natural ease of composition and gift for melody, showing obvious influences of Beethoven and Chopin, with many flashes of the composer's long buried desire for serious, academic composition. They also underpin the fact that Rossini himself was an outstanding pianist whose playing attracted high praise from people such as Franz Liszt, Sigismond Thalberg, Camille Saint-Saëns and Louis Diémer. This show is meant to represent a fictional gala performance probably around 1855 in his honor with Rossini in attendance. it has various excerpts of his operas, and of course the Cujus Animam from the Stabat Mater. the cinematography is great - with the first notes of the Aria, you see Rossini sitting in the balcony (he has thoroughly been enjoying the performance all night) yet with the beginning of the aria his face becomes transfixed and he is transported to this performance in the church for him alone. it is probably meant to symbolize that it was a work that was personally very special to him.
Contristatam, of course. That's the original version ascribed to Jacopone da Todi. Moreover, the present participle ( the soul making sad whom or what?) does not make much sense, IMHO
Definetely NO thin voice - are You serious???

Is not C, but D flat! Really amazing.

The best version I have heard, from Caruso through Pavoratti and everyone else in between. Superb.
Very good Araiza, but you have not heard so many other versions (Björling, Baum, Bonisolli, Cecchele and so forth). There is not any best, but great versions. Sincerely,
What a huge voice. Brilliant. I hope I can sing like this in years to come. Congratz

Very haunting, one of the greatest interpretations.
What a fine tenor from Mexico, Most handsome voice!
livelli mostruosi!!!

Unmatched performance!! Bravissimo Araiza, Bravissimo Abbado!!!

Simply great.
This is lovely! And the person portraying Rossini is Paul Brooke who is an English actor.
Peg Chandler You know Rossini would smile like this when listening to this gorgeous performance. Bravo.

Hummm!!
That is quite possibly the richest C# I have ever heard
this is REAL PURE HIgh C.
Dear Jacque, it is exactly a perfect C# 440hz😉
Hear Bjoerling 😉
Wundervoll!!!!!
the top note here is actually a Dflat above C. Old recording of Bloerling singing this piece as well.
Meraviglia

Molto bravo. Complimenti di vero cuore.

Araiza es un tenor ligero, no dramático
This performance is froma Rossini concert that included Caballe, Horne, Lind, Ramey, and others. as far as I can tell the man in the chair is to represent Rossini. (I think lol.)
wow!

Bom demais!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you listen to the rendition of "Il mio tesoro" by both Araiza and Björling, you will hear maestro Björling run out of air, greetings.
Listen please to Il Mio Tesoro by Luigi Alva in Aix in 1971. Summa elegantia and frassing. Nevertheless, Bjoerling and Araiza here are in the same step
No comparison posible. Bjoerling is like the golden standard, absolutely fluid and the perfect tempo and effortlessly.
Lucky you!!!
经典!
Why didn't this guy record the Rossini Otello? There aren't that many around who could do so.
BTW did you know that he started as a bass-baritone. It's in Hines book.
Patrick Boyle really?!!!!
There are many singers who switched along and were smart (good) choices 👍😊
I think you might be referring to an interview where he once said that about Aragall.
@Pawelp You could be right. He did indeed lose some quality when he moved up into heavier roles.
Lyric:
Cuius animam gementem,
Contristatam et dolentem
Pertransivit gladius.
Hi, which variation rings more authentic to you, "contristantem" (the present participle" or "contristatam" (the past participle)?
Marvellous singer and singing; pity they didn't give him his own mic; orchestra too loud!
@bloydaage actually, in that interview he said Aragall was probably the best. You should look him up
Subliem!!!
Does anyone know who the man sitting in the chair is?
I think it's Rossini. This must have been taken from a film or television program. My best guess only.
Do you mean an actor playing Rossini? Because it does kind of look like him, but he died in 1868.
I figured it out, it's just an actor playing Rossini. This is taken from a television program from 1985, "Rossini at Versailles."
the actor playing Rossini is Paul Brooke. this is an excerpt from a 1985 show "Rossini at Versailles". In the show it is a gala performance in Rossini's honor. 5:53: High C#
Whoever put a thumbs down she post a response video showing me something better. Seriously Ridiculous!
is that Rossini there??? lol, spooky!!
Contristatam, of course. That's the original version ascribed to Jacopone da Todi. Moreover, the present participle ( the soul making sad whom or what?) does not make much sense, IMHO
