This route goes through an active forestry area, best avoided when it's working. I know some Mull cyclists have ridden it and posted on Strava, which is where I got the idea for the route, so it's being ridden by others. Please use common sense and don't head into an unsafe working area.

Many thanks for this we came over with the bikes on the ferry after a long drive, rode up to the Glen Forsa hotel, after some food we then headed up to the bothy at the head of the Glen for the evening, next morning we rode to the lovely cafe at Salen then along the not secret trail to Dervaig, did a loop then ended up at Glen Gorm castle cafe, before heading around the coast to Tobermory. Next day we rode back to the Ferry via loch Frisa and had a day at Aberfoyle. We loved Mull and it has wetted our appetite for some future island adventures, not sure about Aberfoyle, nice gravel, and views but felt like a trail centre for gravel. Anyway thanks to your video we had a great couple of days on our whistle stop tour.

I’m pleased it worked well for you and you picked a good time of year. Great weather and before the crazy load of summer tourists.

Glad you like the video Mark. Tomorrow there's a video coming on an island just off Mull which came out fairly well. Also, check out these loops www.komoot.com/collection/1174637/-gravel-loops-isle-of-mull

The hell with a thumbs up. Two hands waving in the air and shouting. Enchanting video. All this in one day, good for you. Makes me want to get back to Mull with a bike and a sea kayak for my next visit. Skye was overrun with tourists, but Mull was terrific. Had a swim in Calgary Bay when it was cold and raining. With the Gulf Stream, the water was warmer than the air.

Thank you for this video, Simon. It inspired & informed today's ride. A few days ago I was driving from Dervaig to Salen when I spotted your 'secret gravel road' which still isn't on the maps & isn't very clear on satellite either. Today I rode nearly the reverse route you posted here. I think I might have seen your eagles too! I definitely saw three birds at a distance that looked very eagle-like so maybe your pair & this year's chick getting flying lessons. I got up to Glengorm only to realise that I hadn't brought my wallet so no cake for me! What a school boy error to make... Thank you again for the inspiration & the route suggestions.

I’m glad it worked for you Hugh. That new road creates an almost off road loop of Loch Frisa.

Very well filmed. Picturesque location. Are there midges on Mull?

    • @alwaysanotheradventure
      @alwaysanotheradventure  3 года назад

All the west coast, with peat soil, has midges except Tiree where the ground is machair- sand based. So sadly yes, but repellant works, they don’t like wind or bright sunshine, and can be worked around.

When watching all of your great ride videos, it's easy to forget that you often have to make frequent stops in order to film segments. It was more obvious on this video, because you had to catch the ferry. Anyway, just a roundabout way of saying thanks for the sacrifices you make to provide these videos. Mull is certainly now on my To Visit list!

Awesome video. You really raise the bar for gravel and adventure cycling videos (and editing). Do you have a video where you review your filming equipment and process?

    • @alwaysanotheradventure

Thanks Matt - I made three videos about the kit, how I structure videos and how I edit. The first is here: ruclips.net/video/gB1jlSvPWio/видео.html

Definitely go tubeless. They can be a hassle to set up but the performance and lack of punctures more than make up for it.
Lower pressures, more grip and comfort too. You won't look back.
Just make sure you take time to get the tape on properly.

    • @alwaysanotheradventure

I’ve tried a couple of times and Sean has tried to convince me. Maybe on my next rims, except I do change my tyres quite frequently, so the sealant can be a pain.

  • @TheWeardale1

Interesting... but i think that's also a downside of using Komoot, as down in england it tends to do routes that pass near farms etc on roads you're not supposed to use, as last week i wanted to do a ride from Bolts Law engine house (county durham) and swing a left towards the bottom (and bypassing Rookhope) - and after chatting to a local guy whilst cycling along - and telling him of my intentions, he said i shouldn't be using that trail, so i just ended up going down to rookhope and back along a road...
    i've got an emtb.. :)
