My ceiling fan came with a safety cable, not sure where to attach it above the ceiling in my apartment... but in the video, the fan doesn’t even have a safety cable... interesting...
Single mom here that does it all but has had my ceiling fan in its original box for about 5 month's since moving in and renovating our new home. I've done it all...demo, drywall, carpet , tile but was terrified to install the fan. I'm getting my tools together right now to put this baby in NOW! Thank you so much for sharing and in such a detailed way. New subscriber 💜 from NC
I haven’t even seen the rest of your videos and I’m already excited to learn. Your voice is so calming and nurturing. You make it doable for DIY ppl like me. Thank you so much. You’re heaven sent.
Hi Chris, just wanted to let you know that, thanks to this video, I installed a ceiling fan in our home yesterday. Having 0% confidence working with electricity (I have tried on occasion and have tripped circuit breakers), it was your detailed instructions that got me through. My wife and I thank you.
I think the main fear people have is that they wonder how they will do the wiring while holding up the fan. Once you understand how the ball hanger works it is really no harder than hanging any other light.
Dear Sir, you are the easiest person to listen to; you have such a calm and relaxed voice! I love it! I actually wish your video was longer! Subscribing now!
Daddy u are an awesome father I could tell from the start but u didnt do the video like you were teaching it to your daughter , more like i dad doing it so for me it was a bit faster than i needed. You were on point but i know it's going to t take multiple watchings to get it... stay tuned I'm trusting u. Gonna try it tomorrow.. I lost my dad so you are it for me..so thumbs up
New homeowners and this saved us. Don't have anyone to help teach us this stuff so this has been a huge help. Following this page for help. Thank you!!!
This video is great. I want to install a fan in my mom's house but fear of burning it to the ground from my inexperience. So seeing your videos will give me at least some courage to see if the boxes are even made for it. Appreciate your help in this. All the best! Love NJ!
HandyDadTV Great video! I just purchased a house myself and they wanted roughly $400 per ceiling fan and the they did not look like they were worth it. But I did have them build it where it was ready for the fans. Now I don't have to pay someone to install them. Appreciate the DIY!
I bought a ceiling fan, and the instructions in the booklet were terrible, with spelling errors, bad Google translation to Chinglish, I could not really understand anything. Thanks to your video I could hang it step by step and was able to install the fan-lamp. Thank you so much for filming this video! Hugs from Jerusalem
Wow!!! You made it look like it was a piece of cake to install. Definitely subscribing! My new home will be built Feb 2021 so I’m having all rooms pre wired for ceiling fans. So I’m gonna do my best to install them my self just to save a lot of money.
That is SO SMART to have the builder wire all the rooms for fans, even if they are upgrades. I just moved and I’m fortunate that all the bedrooms were wired for ceiling fans. Unfortunately, the great room and loft weren’t, so I need to add them eventually.
I'm sure the landlord will have no problem with your daughter leaving that 'upgrade' installed ....They can now charge an extra $10 bucks a month for that unit!...lol. Great video, I feel confident enough now to replace our bedroom fan with a unit that has more horsepower.
Great video sir. I also work for the mouse but here in California. I hope if your daughter is still a CM she wasnt effected by the lay offs. Anyways thanks for the great content.
Thanks! I'm about to replace my broken ceiling fan now (it hanged too low and i broke off the blades changing my shirt in the morning #TallPeopleProblems. Got a flush mount for the replacement and now with this video I feel confident I can do this!
My question is how do I install the fan (has light on the fan) so I can control them separately? Do I need install more wiring or do I just install new switch? Please please help xx
Your fan should have two pull switches on it. One controls the fan; the other controls the light. Ceiling fans are ideally suited to have power to them all the time. Wall switches are completely optional.
Outstanding! That could not have been more clearly presented. The narration is good too. Question. Do you know what the up and down switch on the fan, above the blades does?
My son's bedroom appeared to have a ceiling fan mount because it was wired with a light switch and then also a 3 speed wall mounted speed controller. So I took down the rather industrial florescent light and sure enough 3 wires coming in, white, black and red with the red connected to the florescent light and the black just capped. The box also appeared to be mounted by 4 metal screws heading up, and a check with a stud finder showed the box was not attached to a stud so it must have a metal fan support. But then Doh! The mounting bolts did not fit the holes on this 25 year old box! So I found some that did, found a washer that could bridge the smaller bolts to the mounting bracket, and voilà! But being a somewhat nervous guy I also put in a lag hook to one of the joists and hung the safety cable. So far so good. Wiring red to blue, black to black, and white to white resulted in the wall controls performing as expected. Since most new fans do not have a cable for reverse but instead just a little switch on the side nobody ever uses, it works great. I suppose I could have got a new box and attempted to attach it to the brace, but I bet the hole pattern and bolts are all different for that too, so I just chanced using the bolts that fit even though they were smaller. They must have supported a fan at some point, or were at least intended to. And the fan I got was a "small room" size so it isn't super heavy. Pro tip: Some fans, including the one I put in, have an "access hole" inside the switch casing for mounting the fan blades. The bolts for the packing rubbers and fan blades cannot be accessed any other way.
In my experience living in FL the past 10 years your house/apartment will come with a light or a fan in each room, never a 2n1. You'll also usually have at least 1 outlet per room connected to the light switch which to this day annoys the shit out of me
Virtual dad in the cloud these are the type of things I would ask my pops before he died thank you!!! Do you recommend a particular fan and different technique for installing in a new home ?
Thanks so much! I have had good luck with Hunter and Hampton Bay fans. Expect them to be SILENT, especially in bedrooms. If you hear a hum, maybe loosen it so it’s not too tight against the ceiling. If that doesn’t help, take it back immediately and try a different brand. Don’t buy cheap ones for bedrooms.
Most apartments I've rented over the years come with nothing on the ceilings, and the wall switches are usually hooked up to the worst electrical outlet in the room's top outlet, so the renter can plug in a floor / desk lamp. Just less stuff a bad renter can break or steal, I guess.
Handy Dad is my moniker with my 4 kids. They got diy problems they always know who to call. Just about anything home related. But guess what they are my tech support for phones, tablets and computers. Lol.
👍 Two thumbs way up dad! 👍 Your video is great and welcoming. The perfect mix of professional and good 'ol home feel wisdom. I'm definitely subscribing on one of my channels. Keep up the amazing job. I wish I was like you.
Technically, I didn't. But if it was meant only for a light fixture, the apartment would have come with a light fixture installed. Having no fixture there was justification, in my mind, that the box was intended for a ceiling fan. Plus it was common knowledge that other renters did the same thing.
Use a voltage tester to determine which one is hot. You will get no voltage across the “real” white and ground. You will get 120 volts across the black/white and black/ground (assuming all wires are connected correctly upstream).
Hello, I just watch this... its great and you are fast at doing it.. question, how can it be done when there is wires or a whole to mount it and no attic...???
Look for a different video. You can add a box fairly easily, but running the wire will be more of a challenge. Might be better off calling an electrician.
So my friend said all I need to do is turn the light switch off and no need to hit the breaker switch. Is this correct? He says the light switch is virtually like a breaker. If it’s off no power is running.
The blue wire on the fan is typically to a light kit. If you don’t have a wall switch to control the light, you would connect the fan’s black and blue wires to the black hot wire.
Use a voltage tester to verify, but typically the red wire will be controlled by a wall switch. If this is the case, you can connect the fan’s light wire (usually blue) to the red wire from the ceiling, and the motor to the black wire from the ceiling. That way, the fan will run even if the light switch is off.

Absolutely! Power needs to be off before replacing any electrical fixtures.

Great tutorial. What do you do when both wires are white?
Use a voltage tester to determine which one is hot. You will get no voltage across the “real” white and ground. You will get 120 volts across the black/white and black/ground (assuming all wires are connected correctly upstream).
Thank you

If you have 12-2 wire, Ik hook the neutral together and grounds together but can you hook the blue wire with the other 2 black wires and it work?
The blue wire on the fan is typically to a light kit. If you don’t have a wall switch to control the light, you would connect the fan’s black and blue wires to the black hot wire.
Great help here 👍🏻 But I have all wires plus a RED coming from ceiling ???? What is the red ??? Where dose it go on fan ?? Thank you sir
