Lyrics by Iain Sinclair
Oh my love has left me with bairnes twa
And that's the last of him I ever saw
He joined the army and marched to war
He took the shilling, he took the shilling and he's off to war
Chorus:
Come, laddies, come, hear the cannon roar
Take the king's shilling and you're off to war
Well, did he look as he marched along
With his kilt and sporran and his musket gun?
The ladies tipped him as he marched along
He sailed out by, he sailed out by the Broomielaw
Well the pipes did play as he marched along
And the soldiers sang out a battle song
"March on, march on," cried the captain gay
For king and country, for king and country we will fight today
Repeat Chorus:
Well the battle rattled to the sound of guns
And the bayonets flashed in the morning sun
The drums did beat and the cannons roared
And the shilling didn't seem, oh the shilling didn't seem much worth the war
Well, the men they fought and the men did fall
Cut down by bayonet and musket ball
Many of these brave young men
Would never fight for, would never fight for the king again
Repeat Chorus: 3x
die in war...
die in war...
Take the king's shilling and you're off to war...
Oh my God this is so Beautifull . These are 2 of my favourite singers they would bring a tear to a glass eye.
Karan’s voice, no matter the tone of the song, upbeat or melancholy, always has me holding back tears. It’s indescribably beautiful.
I'd go with that - yup she's got a stellar voice. It's kind of edgy and super smooth at the same time.
A great song written by Ian Sinclair from Caithness, Scotland in the 1970s when he was part of the folk trio Mirk. Song often confused as traditional orgin - definitely captures the sentiment well. Superb performance!
They sound wonderful together. Their voices meld beautifully. She is my favorite singer and this is my favorite music. Need to marry into this culture.... I could only hope to listen to these sounds for eternity. THANK YOU
I love these two together you can tell they are really enjoying singing together and this is different for James. They sound lovely.
@@cyndia6278 I drink alot I'm from Ireland so I would be considered an Alcoholic . But in my moments of clarity these songs calms the madness.
Was listening to Ms Casey, didn't quite expect to come across James Taylor and Jerry Douglas hanging with her. love that good musicians tend to find each other
In a far off land in a lonely grave
Lies a man who died alone
Who fought so hard and gave his life
For his country and its throne
In a great big town in a great big house
Sits a man upon a throne
Who eats his fill and drinks a toast
To the man who died alone
I always love how, during the solo, the twin fiddles kind of mimic the sound of the pipes.
Karan & James who would've thought these two voices would come together absolutely great harmonies and wonderful musicians
Great voices but I thought they were singing in unison !
Everyone musician in this video is so awesome and distinct. I love how I can tell it's Dan Tyminski on the mandolin just by the style of strumming.
I can say the same for Jerry Douglas's very distinctive dobro playing. There's probably more talent in that room than half of today's music industry.
Absolutely brilliant. Beautiful harmonies and superb backing. Masters of their craft...
This is the second reference to harmonies here but I thought they were singing in unision ?
So enjoyable, had to hear it again! Glad to discover James Taylor singing traditional Celtic music. Karan has a beautiful voice. The more I hear Celtic music, the more I love it !!
Que j'aime cette chanson, ces deux magnifiques voix et cet ensemble de musiciens talentueux. Je ne me lasse pas de l'écouter. Peut-être ai-je du sang irlandais qui coule dans mes veines?
This is a beautiful and very sad song. They play and sing it so beautifully.
I love to see how attentive James is!
This video and song, one of the most beautiful Irish songs/arrangements I've heard, and I've heard a lot. Thank you for this beautiful experience. Thank you.
Kristaps Gailis This is Scottish song
Thanks, my bad, true, you can hear the difference.
he sailed out by the broomilaw, GLASGOW song
7 years later reply, 👍
Jerry Douglas is in the house!
James is a fabulous singer.....but here he has to work, work, work....
There's a longer version of this where he talks about struggling with the informality of the session .. something he's not used to.
Isn't it interesting how some of the finest music on youtube has such a small number of views?
YES IT IS --- STRANGE, ISN'T IT ????
Have listened to this tune a hundred times or more, It still has the power to move me. absolute class!
Mike McGoldrick, great to see you sitting in there with some sweet notes!
A gorgeous performance by hugely talented folks. Thanks for sharing this!

Karen is Irish but the song is Scottish, written in the seventies, but I agree with you.

Since I saw Karan perform in Gouda (Netherlands) I'm a big fan of her. looking forward to a new show in the Netherlands.

josiahsdays
I’m still waiting for the harmonies. They were singing in unison the whole time...
I love this song !
Maith thu Karan. My native village is proud of you. Up The Deise
Ahh, I hope James and Karan had a memorable time. It sure seemed like it. Interesting times indeed on this 2013. I miss Karan with Solas! Beannacht to all in the new year!!!
Very nice ballad with two exceptional voices !! Phalaïna
World class singers and arrangement. To be fair global phenomenon Taylor has to work a bit at this one but nevertheless demonstrating his pure tone unique vocal which totally makes the track more than just another folkie song. That's not to decry folike songs - I love the genre - but to hear Taylor in the midst for me raises it to another level. Beautiful was expected of this crew - fabulous this one:-)
Karan my legend. Love you as always x
Wow! What a great find. Thanks for posting!
Magnifique.
outstanding and absolutely stunning! :-) xx
Magic
2nd verse 0:40
3rd verse 1:04
4th verse 2:03
5th verse 2:30
Great song!
magic...
Angelic sounds😭😭
I'll be at the Z in New Bedford on March 17th!
Luvlee.
Super!))))
Beautiful really
Its'a very nice- fantastic
Wonderful stuff.
Dan Tyminski’s playing in there.
This song story resonates so well to what is happening this very day as another British soldier dies in Afghanistan. Can our different nations never live side by side together in peace?. We are, after all, just Jock Tamson's bairns.
This is so beautiful!
Very nice
The same group performed with Julie Fowlis - they're great.
my peeps be jammin
Am i supposed to drink whiskey when i try to appreciate this?
Its interfering with my fun run macros.
@Natschaa81 Not sure about DVD, but the song without James Taylor is off The Winds Begin to Sing.
Oh my love has left me wi' bairnies twa
And that's the last o' him I ever]saw
He joined the army and he’s marched awa'
etc
I've loved Karan Casey's work from her days in Solas to the present. I love James' music as well & love that he's working outside of his comfort zone here. Silly question tho. Is that Dan Tyminski I'm spying on mandolin around 1:42 or so?
Yes that's Dan Tyminski.
He was a guest on Transatlantic Sessions 3, as was Darrell Scott on the TAS 4.
Take a look at the Upload-Section on my channel!
@@gcbfolk Will do. Thank you for posting these. I've been lucky enough to have seen Karan many times live. Both with Solas & solo with the Vallely's & once with Robbie Overton. Pretty magical stuff.
Such a sad, beautiful ballad, and these two sounded great singing it togetherWas James looking down at sheet music or lyrics the whole time, or was he playing something off-camera? Just curious...
Who cares
gcbfolk, you might like to change the text of the heading to read: Lyrics [ [Iain Sinclair - The King's Shilling]. At the moment the impression given is that Karan Casey wrote the lyrics, which is not, in fact, so.
Iain Sinclair is a superb songwriter whose songs are far too often uncredited or assumed to be "Trad".
"Tak a Dram Afore ye Go" is another great song of his which far too frequently goes unattributed.
Very good.Check out Molasses Creeks version.
Beautiful! Does anyone know the chord sequence for the last line of the verse?
Was this part of the transatlantic sessions?
Is that Dan Tyminski on mandolin?
Sounds like he’s from Belfast in this song
Was this one of the Transatlantic sessions ??
Yes, it's on Transatlantic Sessions 4
From Transatlantic Sessions?
starve ..or fight for the hanoverians
Heard this in a History lesson about WWI propaganda. It's so beautiful :)
Still here, still listening.
She looks a bit like Catherine Tate ^^
i think i may be responsible for about 20,000 of these views...
Lovely video, thank you for sharing. If you get a second, please come by my channel and take a listen my original music. I hope you enjoy.
