    I would love to see a video on how you go about picking base colours depending on what you intend the end colour to be and how that effects the process of choosing the colours in between. I am having trouble creating smooth gradients and I think it’s down to picking the wrong colours for the desired affect.

    Love this video on the dragon skin. Lots of great ideas in there. Would like to see something more in the greenish range. Maybe not as bright green as shown on the box art for some of the dragons, but more of a natural darker green. Love the videos guys.

    Another fantastic video, and very timely as I'm painting some drakes right now! I'd love to see maybe a shorter video talking about the underside of the wing- GW and a lot of other painters do a two tone effect on the wings and body of the dragon. It's generally an off white or khaki/cream color that contrasts with the primary color of the body and tops of wings. I'm kinda stumped if I should just do a warm, off white, wash with a sepia, then dry brush over it. Or maybe a pink or purple wash for a translucent wing effect?
    Thanks for another great video!

    I'm pretty new to miniature painting, got into Warhammer late April and have been obsessed with improving my limited painting skills.
    I've been working on a Tyranid army, and I've gone with green skin (hexwraith flame) with purple carapace (magos purple) over a slapchop base. I then cover the skin in biel-tan green, wait for it to dry, and then cover the entire thing in nuln oil. I think it looks really good, but I know it could be better.
    I'd love if you could do a video covering that sort of colour scheme. I'm so bad at colour theory that I have no idea where to start to get a similar outcome that looks fantastic.
    Anyway, thanks for reading this if you do, love the videos! Keep em coming

    I'd like to see a tutorial on doing the undersides of a stretched wing membrane, the way they become semi-translucent when fully stretched.
    A lot of dragon wing undersides are just beige/flesh colored, which I think often looks somewhat flat.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  7 месяцев назад

      This is is a legit hard one to execute, I've yet to find a way that doesn't involve fancy glazing and colour theory, the flat thing is a real issue, it's what we fought hard against here, I think it's why their wings tend to be so detailed/wrinkled generally.

    Firstly, thank you. Your tutorials have been more helpful to me as a miniature painter than everything else I've watched combined. I've been working on dragons recently and have not been able to sort out the various greens I should be using for a green dragon. I quite like the look of the Lupercal Green (base) color - that sort of dark emerald look, but am worried this would make adding any sort of shading/contrast nearly impossible. (dragon is for a D&D game, not 40k). **Could you make some recommendations on colors to accompany that (or some selection of greens that would work)?

Basically a quick and easy way to do NMM on a dragon without taking 10 years to complete lol.. If not, what would be the best ways to paint metallic colors without making it look derpy? That would be a good video I think, since I know a lot of ppl paint a more classic style Fantasy dragon with metallic colored wings... Just a thought. You can literally follow those with *anything*, just depends what your desired finish is, generally picking something with a reputation for good coverage is a great start, like our mephiston here.
      I love black dragons, check out a few of our different previous black recipes (from anything, could be from armour, too). Blue-black into blue-grey looks incredible, and is very forgiving and effective.

    Sorry if that’s a bit long one.
    I discovered your channel recently and already went through some tutorials - they’re great, making me think and hopefully better understand what I’m doing (I’m a beginner painter). Thanks to you and your videos I am starting experimenting and slowly and painfully accepting that experiments = mistakes != end of mini painting. 😱
    Thanks for this one - the leathery wing is amazing and the process explanation was very informative. For me the different result depending on base colour was quite a surprise- didn’t though it could be such a difference!
    Watching your videos I couldn’t help but notice that you rather select big models (or their parts ;)). Is this because those small, nasty-spikey-spindly minis (I’m looking at you Namarti Thralls) have not enough space for dry brushing? ;)
    I would like to see some more OSL, on surrounding objects of various base colours and with light source of various tones.
    And question (probably someone already asked this somewhere): do you use wet pallete? What for?

    • @darrenj3720
      @darrenj3720 7 месяцев назад +1

      Wet pallettes are designed to keep paints useable for longer. Very handy if you are painting lots of the same colour mini (think squads) or if you want to blend colours in a small area (faces)

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hey buddy, for something like that (thralls) I'd use Drybrush on a particular aspect, like their flesh, fast and loose, not worrying about control, and then go in and neatly do the armour around it, gives you the best of both worlds.
      Darren's pretty spot on about the palette, they're great for keeping a lot of colours and mixes usable for prolonged periods.
      Don't worry about the mistakes, they're the best bit, they teach you lessons you couldn't learn as deeply any other way, embrace them, understand them, and adapt next time!
      I go fast, and they slow me down... Also the UK is pretty humid and cool, so my paints stay workable for a long time on my primed palette, I like being encouraged to go quick :D

    I know contamination is a trigger 😂, but Im curious how you look after your dampening pad during and in between sessions? During sessions I tend to just clean the brush on the pallet like you do in your videos, and then when I finish I wash the pad out under the tap….it can of course stay wet for awhile. So yeah just wondering what you do with yours?

      @ArtisOpus  7 месяцев назад +1

      Nothing really dude, just don't seal it in the lid to get muggy! :D I pull it up sat on its edge like a coin balancing, in the pot, to make sure it dries fully before the next session, that's it!
      Contamination is a lie, almost! meming myself here 😅

    How deep does the texture on the pallets go? I saw one in a store and it looked quite shallow, so was wondering once theyre primed and used, how long is the image around for?

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  7 месяцев назад +1

      You buy them from day one and both add and remove texture by use, they mature like a fine wine.
      I tend to do 'heavy' work top right (right handed), the mid and left still have the same texture they did a year back, which is where I do heavy cleaning, and lighter testing, both of which don't add/remove the texture too much.
      You don't want a high texture (3dish) surface, you encourage dust, and lose the practical elements of a traditional palette, which are numerous.
      Don't worry about use though, mine's literally 200% heavier than when I started with it :D

    Hey Byron
    Excellent video yet again . I loved the first dragon wing the best , although the red one was good. I would like some help on how to paint a black dragon, I don’t want to make it look chalky , and I’d like to do a lava effect on the throat and belly , similar to your lava bases that you did . Any advice would be great 👍🐲🐉

      Hi Vicky, have a little look at 'Elminiaturista' on Instagram, he did a dragon bust (the same one we did... might have been my suggestion ^^) a while back, and it looks like a glowing coal.
      I think for me it's important to go to a cool black-grey, to contrast with the firey bits, but also to give you room for a transition that doesn't easily get chalky, like neutral grey/white does.
      You could use deep orange for this, too, but then you'd not have contrast for the lava bits, unless you used very different shades.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  7 месяцев назад

      We have a video coming very soon (watch out for something big and green) that will help you on exactly this.
      For me it's put less on, take less off, your aim isn't to work it *into* the brush, it's to leave it on the very tip of the bristles, load the brush vertically, not using it like a spoon to take too much paint.

      Hey buddy, are you starting from black? It might be giving you a very hard job jumping UP as much as you need to with the brighter ones.
      You could always start in the middle, or lighter, and wash with black to catch the recesses, then finish up catching the edges, much like our second wing?
