The Apple Car failure brought too much negative attention to the company; AVP was a way to provide some cover/noise and again show that Apple is alive and innovating. If the Car was not canceled, you can bet the AVP would have been held in development longer or canceled. The perception of Apple being behind in AI is further pushing them to progress in the world of MR/AVP.
