Curious question: I'm working my way through the tutorial with version 64-bit build 2023.12000. When I use the render TOP (0:57), it has a checkered (transparent) background, in contrast to the black background in the video. Why is that?

Hello. it's because the render is actually transparent. you can use transform top and increase background alpha to 1 and enable comp over background color. you also can change its default from Edit>>Preferences>>TOPs>>Viewer background. and change it to black.
