It's like saying (Hey, Facebook sells your data because Google does too) But I will keep this one aside, not my area to speak.
Yeah but what I really like about this channel is no matter what the video is about we get good comment feedback like you unlike many other channels whose comment section is filled with comments praising the creator and spam comments.
All your concerns are kinda true except 2:55. India doesnt have any stringent privacy law like GDPR. Thats because of the stupid casual attitude of govt and a digitally illeterate population. So every company (especially biggies like google or meta) easily get away. A country of 1.3 billion is nothing short of data gold mine for these companies and in 21st century, data is the new gold or oil 😂
So Truecaller is doing damage control. They become a different countries company when it comes to paying taxes and become an indian comapny when it comes about data laws.
Yeah and nowadays they are paying youtubers to spread all good things about them and misguide others first with Technical guruji and now Ranjit sir I thought I could trust but not anymore
For the contact access thing, for them to search from their own database for an unknown number, they collect i.e. upload it from user's contacts book. They can't have a database unless they collect it from users.
It seems responses are provided by Truecaller PR. If you think about it .. they have definitely collected data until Google/Apple brought privacy and data collection across their operating system and TC had to make changes to stay on Play Store
From what I have understood and as an app developer I can say that... Whenever we signup/register ourself after we install Truecaller all the details that we provide will be saved. So as soon as we recieve the call app checks whether the incoming caller is in our contacts or not. If the contact is there... It will display the contact name and if it is not listed in our contacts then it will make a service call to check whether it is there in their registered records. This is purely my perspective... Correct me if iam wrong✌️
@@akhilallam627 Can you explain what Phone permission actually do and what all information do they get? I read online but didn't understand, some websites say it is used to check if phone is currently on call to some questionable permissions like to read IMEI and full network and SIM details.
Ye they definitely did this. Back when jio launched i got jiofi with jio sim . Now just to remeber the no i saved it as "myjiofino" in my dads phone and then after few months i put that sim in my mobile and called my friend to troll him. Buy sure as hell he knew it was me cos true caller flashed "myjiofino" is calling on his phone. How did that happen then? They magically flashed the exact string as the one i saved on my dads phone. Maybe they are not uploading the whole contacts.csv file and are definitely doing the processing locally on the device. Devil lies in the details and the details i don't know. But by exp i know that something's up for sure. Edit1: I had to specifically unlist my no from their site which they obtained without my conscent as i didn't made any profile on truecaller.
They are definitely uploading contacts from phone. I recently purchased a new sim for my mom and saved the number in my phone with a name “MyMom”. There were hardly anyone else who knew her number and she does not have truecaller installed. A couple of days later, when my mom called another aunt who had truecaller it showed the name as “MyMom” in Aunt’s phone. Please explain this. They are trying to get away by looking very genuine by using influencers like you. PS:I have downloaded from PlayStore.
I have seen in many cases where the contact is saved as some personal name eg. Ranjit Bhaiya(in phone contact). The same name is reflected in other phones as well. So I still believe TrueCaller is somehow uploading the contacts for their service.
Truecaller works without SMS permission however keeps asking again and again repeatedly for SMS permission which is shady in my opinion it is very annoying
Ranjit ji came hoping for actual answers but was utterly disappointed. I understand sponsorship/promotion etc. but when it comes to sensitive concerns such as people's privacy then it becomes a very gray area. Thankfully a lot of people in the comments seem to be asking the right counter-questions, happy to see that.
Honestly, I would love it if there was an open source alternative to Truecaller. Like a public collected database of all spam numbers, something that works by the reports of users and everything is integrated into a caller app with a very high quality.
Sorry Ranjit sir, I cannot agree with the "contacts not uploaded" thing. It has happened multiple times that I receive call from an UNKNOWN number and found truecaller showing names "Mohit Sir E.Rly" or "Sonu Flipkart Delivery". My father doesn't use truecaller, and when searched his name appears as "Preetam's Father". These things are only possible when other users' phonebook data is uploaded to a central location, and Truecaller dynamically fetching the info when the call comes. Not necessarily that's its a bad or unsafe thing, but let's not mislead users by saying no phonebook data gets uploaded to truecaller's server.
I don't believe it for a second that they are not taking our contacts' details. There were many cases in my day to day life where I stored a person's name as "Anil Bhaiya" or "Anil IV Senior", etc. Very personalized and something that makes sense for me and it was updated in Truecaller with that same name. Another thing to note is that when you first launch the app, it will ask you to add your name. If you add a bogus name, for example "Call Utay Bey", it will actually update that name in some cases. So someone with truecaller will get "Call Utay Bey" from Truecaller. :P
Dear Ranjit, I love your tech reviews and trust them even more. But this one is making me feel uncertain about your videos. I never created any smartphone apps or whatsoever but I am a software developer myself can for sure tell you that there are numerous ways for apps to get the data they want and upload it to servers. Don't trust them with their fancy marketing strategies.
When I was there at Tawang, a bordering town to China in Arunachal Pradesh, all the common public received a circular from the District Commissioner Tawang to uninstall 20 or so apps Truecaller included but no other Social app as Ranjit mentioned. This circular was circulated on behalf Indian Armed forces.
They upload contacts, and read messages. As simple as that. They give you loans by reading your messages for example. And their humongous database the size of which is multiples of their userbase numbers is proof they upload the address book.
I will tell simple story; I have friend called "x" his nickname is "johnny sins", we friends all save his name as "johnny sins", then Truecaller automatically shows his name "Johny Sins".
If Truecaller didn't upload contacts, then how do that get access to personal names ( nicknames, household name or saved in personal style) which you can clearly identify by seeing the name shown on the Truecaller caller ID. I have got calls from people where there name was shown as say 'golu', or say 'guddu Assam', or 'bablu ki maa'. And some of the people were the ones I knew but their number was not saved. And that's how I am 100% sure that's not their official name. I am pretty sure nobody registers to Truecaller with such nicknames or personalized identifiers. So, if Truecaller doesn't upload contacts, it had no way to know those names. I am still in doubt about that non-upload claim of theirs.
I think they read & store the phonebook. Suppose you save one person's phone number as 'Sunil Chopra Mumbai Sony shop', if the person never registered in True Caller, it will still show the name as 'Sunil Chopra Mumbai Sony shop'. It cannot happen unless they read & upload the contacts to their server.
I've followed this channel for quite a long time and this is the first time I see him siding with a lying company and so this video is really different from the entire channel
Years ago one of my friends saved my number in his phone as "Ravi Inter". Someone else later asked me why Truecaller app displayed my name as "Ravi Inter"? I do not trust Truecaller.
I have been using true caller with premium subscription for a really long time, but recently I switched to iphone and true caller simply doesn't work there ,whether u r a premium member or not
Truecaller does not allow us to use the application without the contacts permission. How can we believe them when they say that dont upload the contacts to their server...
They definitely upload the contacts. At least they did when they first launched. My number came with the exact name which was stored on my sister's phone. Also when Truecaller was first launched in India, when I downloaded it. It was uploading my contacts. At the time I was on Android Eclair. Since then never trusted it and I never installed it.
I never registered in Truecaller but still they display my name to unknown members. Until and unless they collected contact data from my family or friends and stored it in the database it isn't supposed to show my name to others!!
Yes, they have nicknames of peoples stored in their database . Where did they get this personal data if they havent uploaded contact list. Once my friend called anothe friend and on his phone trucaller listed hin as "Billu Ji" when his name is balbir and he dont hv truecaller. Where did truecaller get nicknames of persons? This is shady.
I didn't understand the clarification on how it shows who's calling. They can't figure this out unless they have saved the contacts on their servers or database. Right?
Don't agree with the rationale of Truecaller. I have never downloaded Truecaller ever but yet my phone number is identified by someone who is using Truecaller. Also nobody downloads Truecaller from website. Its always from app store and still phone numbers are being displayed. So they saying that they dont upload/use the contacts from the phone of the user is a very difficult pill to swallow.
From my experience I have found that true caller do upload the contact There is one landline no. Which is not saved on my phone contact list and if I get call from that number it shows the exact name that this number is saved on my brother's phone contact list
TC collects data without consent , if I don't use Truecaller but one of my friend uses TC gets my number, email id whatever is in his contact without consent. Since India doesn't have data protection law ,Truecaller allegedly moved its operation & data centres to India in order to bypass Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation. Majority of TC datasets are collected without consent.
so how does truecaller know almost everyone's name, even if they don't have Truecaller installed? whats the source for them if they're not getting info from contact book..do they get name and details from the telecom companies?
One of my friend had my name with my school's name, that has been showing on my truecaller everytime someone calls me so yeah they are uploading contacts or maybe at some point they did.
had a number. never installed truecaller nor gave my name, still truecaller was able to recognise my number and name. how's that possible without collecting data from other users' contacts.
The SMS part is a blatant lie. Even if you disable the SMS permission from Truecaller and even from Google Play Services, it still shows OTPs and updates in the SMS option in the app. The Contacts uploading part is also wrong. Even if you buy a new SIM card, the first time that you search that number on Truecaller, it shows nothing. But a couple of days after saving that number, with, let's say, ABC as the name, on your phone, which also has Truecaller installed, when you try to search for that number from another device with Truecaller, it'll show that the name is ABC on Truecaller app. This is even when you have never suggested the name ABC for that number to Truecaller. So yes, they do upload your contacts and being scammy about it.
I've never used Truecaller, how does my contact info comes on Truecaller. I think they've changed the rules and regulations now but earlier they sure did collect user's phonebook
My experience with truecaller is totally different. All my downloads are from play store. But once it so happened that a family member of mine took a new number, I saved it with a nick name, and guess what on Truecaller it appeared with this nick name. How? That was the day I stopped using it.
These all feature are now also provided by google dialer then i don't there is any need of truecaller if google dialer is provided in the smartphone by default!
I have heard that phones in which Truecaller is preloaded does not adhere to Google Play Store policies. So it is possible that Truecaller would have uploaded contacts from these phone liberally. Also recently Google stopped apps from uploading contacts of users.
Why we dont get notification banner when someone calls on iphone? I have it but almost of no use. I literally have to search the number separate. It works for very few numbers but not for most of the numbers
Truecaller does use the phonebook of every user to recognize any unknown number and i have checked it personally by saving a new number only on my phone with a particular name and when checked on Truecaller from another device it showed the same name that i used for that new number, hence it used my phonebook to search that particular new number. So Truecaller does violate privacy rules. Come on ranjith !!! didn't expect you to be biased.
They do upload contacts to their server. You can test it by buying a new SIM and have that number added to a device which has Truecaller. Now make a call from another device which has Truecaller and you will see that that contact will popup with name from Truecaller. I'll believe them once they make the contact permission optional.
sir, i want to understand that how Truecaller build there database without uploading our contacts? I guess they can't do it only by suggestions given by users.
So why can't Truecaller function without providing access to contact book if someone is not using dialer feature . The app should should just query the TC db for every call .
Hello If they don't upload contacts to their server, how can they identify who the caller is? They built a database over time by uploading contacts from people. Or do they have a different explanation for this?
The only problem I have with Truecaller is that even though I have denied the SMS permission, I can still see my SMS in the app. Can anyone else confirm this?
Does that mean if a person or organization doesnt have truecaller, Truecaller wont get their details? But i remember getting contact details of a person who havent installed Truecaller. Then from where they are getting? Also in another case, the name appeared to be the nickname called by his friends. That should be coming from their friends right?
I have used Truecaller since 2011-12 on Android and Old Nokia Symbian phones In earlier days It was uploading contacts to their server. I had tried and tested in 2013, Not sure about now. Also prior contact permission was not mandatory in Android couple of years back I have used app without giving contact permission, but why they forced to give permission of contacts if the app can run without contact permission ?
If it doesn't upload contacts, how is it able to identify numbers which were never used to create a Truecaller account? Plus at times I have seen it identified numbers with nicknames people use to save numbers with, how would you explain that?
Automatic blocking known Spam calls is not a Premium only feature. I have Truecaller without Premium, but I have seen Spam Calls getting blocked without even ringing. Great Video 👍🏻 clears doubts if any.
I'm a Truecaller premium member, but in my experience I found Google's spam filter is better than Truecaller. I don't see any advantage of true caller premium membership other than removing the ads.
EU GDPR is the most strict data privacy law, I would anytime trust a company following EU guidelines rather than they are based in country like India where there is no such thing like privacy and even govt. companies sell customer data for cheap bucks.
Spreading misinformation. They definitely upload the contact and I stopped using it quite a long time ago. It is a matter of faith. Do you believe the contact that is uploaded is safe or not. Google also maintains the data but doesn't make it public. It just identifies whether a call is spam or not. Definitely going to put this channel as not a recommended list.
If I get an unknown number, I searched that and it gives the name(99% time it gives). So it checks the number from my list as well as somewhere else's as well. If it does not stores the data so I wonder how it finds the name at that moment.
One thing y'all have noticed that ranjit sir have clearly told and wrote that this is a sponsored video. But Technical guruji nowhere mentioned about the sponsorship
@@CharlieNd5 no one wants to use truecaller as dialer app. There are two different permissions for logs and contacts. I would like to not give access of contacts to truecaller only logs so that it can identify numbers that are calling me not every saved number.
@@CharlieNd5 Nope, Truecaller is a Caller ID app. There's a phone app, contact app and a Caller ID app. If you don't give contact permission to Caller ID app it will simply show the name it has in the database. So, my dialer app and contacts app will show the name I have saved and Truecaller will show the name it has in its database. I have already tried something similar by deleting all contacts and running Truecaller. In fact you can run Truecaller in Work Profile using Shelter if your Phone doesn't have an OEM provided parallel app support
As a developer, i can confirm that the app won't be able to function without access to contacts but most apps that ask for access, also upload it even though it may not be required
@@pranvsharma Why is neccesary for default Caller ID app to have contact permission to function properly? Couldn't it work without contact permission by querying every call the phone receives? Is it an Android limitation?
Sorry Sir but, Truecaller just don't have trust. When you just install it would ask to set it to default calling and messaging app which is annoying fr me also those extra permissions which I don't trust truecaller with. Some phone manufacturers are making by default so their phone applications can tell between spam calls so it's not required. (Truecaller is in the zone of not to trusted in India fr some reason they need to gain trust with more privacy options till that happens I'm not installing it😑)
Truecaller is really a good app and I have been using it from the time it was launched in India. They might not be doing such things (like contact upload) now, which is not a shocker since they will not be able to survive thanks to much privacy centric awareness among people. But I am damn sure they were doing it when it was launched. I remember taking new number and that number was displayed with the name that my roommate had saved. I didn't have Truecaller registered with that number. And keeping in mind that since like last 6-7 years people are not changing the number frequently and are sticking to it, I am sure that a Truecaller database (somewhere far away in a backup server under the sea) has the data of 80% of Indian population they can anytime access in their favor. 😅
I use Truecaller premium, and it has value for me as it filters out a lot of junk calls and sms for me. I pay for it because I think it's a value buy for me, I use their service to save time, and that's worth the money I'm paying. I use the one-time yearly payment. Do not buy a subscription. No matter what Truecaller claims, they will definitely use dark patterns to get access to your contacts. It's simply their business model. If they didn't, they'd fall behind competition. I am OK with this, and hence I use it. If you are not, feel free to not use it. There are various ethical and privacy related issues that come with using it. There's no denying it.
It has been a lifesaver app for a socially awkward person like me. So useful I purchased the premium version. It has been really helpful for blocking all the Axis Bank credit card/loan junk calls.
What a timing sir, I have just uninstalled tc 3 days back just because of the doubts/misconceptions and yes those are the same as you mentioned here. Big thank you for clarifying all the doubts/misconceptions. 👏👏👏
This video is sponsored. And looking at the video, truecaller has literally lied about anything said in this video. Contact access and Contact upload ARE one and the same thing. If you give SMS access to TrueCaller, they have recently been caught red handed making a financial profile of its users so that it knows exactly how much money you have in your account and then unnecessarily pushing you loans! Don't install TrueCaller again. If you want to identify unknown numbers, its web version also does the job
Just at login we need to give permissions like phone, contacts and even SMS MESSAGES. And if an app is asking permission. And without them the app won't start or allow us to use it. I will consider that it will take all of my contacts. If they want to say that address book is not stored in their servers then don't ask contacts permission, phone permission. I also see a privacy breach when payment apps like Google pay phone pe and paytm ask SMS permissions because for UPI to work they need that access but in the same time they have all SMS access including other bank, transaction and personal messages.
They do upload address book. For example i have seen contacts which are not on my phone appear as if i have saved them in a third person way e.g why would anyone save their name with "Mr" or "Sir"? And then that contact appears on your phone as Sir. Xyz even though you don't have that contact on your phone.
Sir, once again you prove that you are “ The Dark knight” in the Tech RUclips category. No one could think about making a video on such an app. And that’s the reason True caller approached you.
I have the premium membership but the Proximity sensor starts mulfunctioning If I use the full screen truecaller display. I am using motorola edge 20 pro and even after complaining to truecaller support they couldn't fix the issue and I am using the partial pop up truecaller screen
Truecaller for ios sucks. There is no option to turn off show availability in ios. It shows to others that I am available or was on call. But for android it works awesome.
@@varad7232 yeah man these youtubers are all paid by Truecaller to hide shady truth about them
Lmao 😂😂
ig they store the indian data in indian servers and so, they have to follow the data laws of India
@@ddc171 If you look at DNS requests, switch between VPN you can see that they run a different version in India as Europe has better privacy laws.
For the contact access thing, for them to search from their own database for an unknown number, they collect i.e. upload it from user's contacts book. They can't have a database unless they collect it from users.
I have heard they had much more privilages on phones which have Truecaller preinstalled as they do not follow Google Play Store policies.
I too had a similar experience.
I have noted that happening too
Do you have Enhanced Search turned on in the settings? I think they do take contacts from your phone if it is on
Yes.. experienced this before
yes i too faced this case, thats when i uninstalled the app ....
I have seen in many cases where the contact is saved as some personal name eg. Ranjit Bhaiya(in phone contact). The same name is reflected in other phones as well.
So I still believe TrueCaller is somehow uploading the contacts for their service.
Exactly
It's right.
True! What a point 🧐
Yep
It asks for enhanced search upon installation. Many users click YES without reading the disclaimer.
Truecaller works without SMS permission however keeps asking again and again repeatedly for SMS permission which is shady in my opinion it is very annoying
I just give it then remove it from the settings manually. 😂 That way it doesn't ask it again and again.
Yes u r right Pritam, same thing i faced. Truecaller is safe or not , i cant say but its accessing our all phonebook contacts to upload on truecaller.
All answers by Truecaller team looks like PR speak honestly

You r right Shiva

How do they have such a big database without uploading our contacts to their servers
In India there is no laws so how can I trust any company ? Wtf giv is doing for our data ? Even gov is interested in spying and control of people.
Exactly what I wanted to say.
I don't believe it, i faced it lively my phone contacts were uploaded immediately, and same reflects in there server, maybe now they changed policies

There is one landline no.

Yeah...they upload information.

These all feature are now also provided by google dialer then i don't there is any need of truecaller if google dialer is provided in the smartphone by default!
How do you have a database on the server without uploading the contacts? 🧐

Sir you missed major question
Where is Truecaller servers located????

Does that mean if a person or organization doesnt have truecaller, Truecaller wont get their details? But i remember getting contact details of a person who havent installed Truecaller. Then from where they are getting? Also in another case, the name appeared to be the nickname called by his friends. That should be coming from their friends right?

I had tried and tested in 2013, Not sure about now.
Also prior contact permission was not mandatory in Android couple of years back I have used app without giving contact permission, but why they forced to give permission of contacts if the app can run without contact permission ?
You're asking the exact right questions brother. Never expected Ranjith to do this
If it doesn't upload contacts, how is it able to identify numbers which were never used to create a Truecaller account? Plus at times I have seen it identified numbers with nicknames people use to save numbers with, how would you explain that?

EU GDPR is the most strict data privacy law, I would anytime trust a company following EU guidelines rather than they are based in country like India where there is no such thing like privacy and even govt. companies sell customer data for cheap bucks.
They are in process of shifting data jurisdiction from EU to India just because of that. That’s why they are getting roasted these days

The video is completely not true at all.
True Caller collects your data, uploads your contact list in their server.
Much awaited video. Thanks sir. :)
