Black panther is not the best picture not even close. It is a good comic book movie. Its not even the best marvel movie this year. Does the movie matter or is it the cultural impact?
I was so intrigued to watch this movie because of all the praise that it gets, but after a watched it I wanted to cry because of how bad it was. So bad. Still don’t understand the hype around it and shocked that it’s even nominated. God bless lol

It will stand the test of time. As for this year, score, original song (Suspirium), production design, costume design all clearly deserve nominations by the Academy. Tremendous film, which needs to be viewed more than once.

Well Golden Globes did nominated the horror film Get Out last year for Comedy, and snub House on Haunting Hill in the TV categories. But I feel Toni Collette could get the Oscar nomination, since she was nominated a long while ago for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Sixth Sense.

it's not sure for best picture, but definetely Best Actor. From all nominations in best actor drama, Rami Malek is The One who deserves it so much. More than Bradley Cooper or John David Washington.

Suspiria's score, original song (Suspirium), production design, costume design all deserve noms, but small audience on release limits its chances. 3. I don't see anything for MI or Mid 90's, but you never know 4. Annihilation for VFX (Ex Machina, Garland's last film shocked many by beating out Mad Max in that category). Adapted screenplay is deserving, but unlikely due to many others later in the year that are deserving.
I agree with you, but not completely...I just feel like comic book movies are beginning to get more and more recognition these days, with awesome movies like wonder woman and black panther being nominated, after years of them being considered a joke. @@jhunter1701 I agree, it was a good movie. Its plot was taken straight from Civil War. I found killmongers dialogue to be out of place with the rest of the film. Some of it made me literally cringe (the last but was the WORSE dialogue I have seen in a major motion picture in a long time). I also found his head movements and mannerisms to be comical like something out of a parody movie.

I feel like Shallow is kind of overrated. It's kind of a shallow song pun intended. The best song is actually the closing number. The best song nominated i think is Revelation. So much more artistry and symbolism. But Shallow will probably win and the movie will too
Phillip Lopez oh “ I’ll never love again” is for sure the best song on the album and in the movie. But “shallow” is going to get nominated for everything for its commercial success and show producers hope Gaga and Bradley will do a duet performance. Even though they are probably saving that for the Oscars.

If you are at all interested in animation, calling Mirai "from japan, a new animation studio" is kind of weird. Mamoru Hosoda is one of the biggest name directors in animation in japan. Wolf children, Summer Wars, Boy and the Beast, and Girl Who Lept Through Time, should all be evidence that Hosoda is one of the best directors in animation. Basically, if you're going to put Makoto Shinkai on some kind of pedastal with "your name", we shouls also recognize Hosoda who has a longer more storied career.
Yeah I agree. Hosoda has been making wonderful, award worthy animated films for awhile now. But I am just so happy to see that he is getting the recognition he deserves! Hope this blows over to the oscars to!

I normally have nothing against a comic book movie getting awards nominations and critical acclaims, as long as it has a great plot and interesting character dynamics..but this is outrageous.. Black Panther is probably the most OVERRATED movie of 2018, and that critics raving about it just for its cultural significance, not based on a tour de force plot, is a joke. I thought the movie was fine, definitely not horrible, but oscar or globe worthy?? I am not sure about that.

Black Panther is a good movie, but shouldn't have been nominated for best picture. A project can have cultural relevance and dominate in its sub-genre, but still lack the fundamental strengths many other films have when it is evaluated as a film, and BP is one of them, in my opinion.

Bohemian Rhapsody, Eighth Grade, A Star is Born and Ready Player One were my favorite movies this year. Still have to watch Mary Poppins Returns, The Favourite and The Mule before the year ends. Very shocked The Mule wasn't nominated for anything! 😲

Best part of this was reading the salt in the comments for Black Panther being nominated. Some of these folks are the same people who claimed it wouldn't even break $700 mil, it not only broke 1.5bn, it smashed records worldwide and became the highest grossing solo comic book movie of all time. And now the movie is being nominated for awards. Couldn't have asked for a better end to its run in 2018. The salt for its awards nomination is the icing on the cake. 😂😂😂

I'm so happy that Black Panther got nominated for best picture. But I'm a little salty that Wonder Woman didn't get anything last year when in my opinion Black Panther and Wonder Woman were very similar movies with the same pro's and con's.
Green book is my fav movie of the year, so I really hope that Ali wins something. I also LOVED Mary Poppins at an early screening and Emily Blunt is the loml so I hope she wins as well.
I'm just really excited for Rami Malek to be nominated for his AMAZING work in BoRhap. I've been a fan of him since NATM1 came out, and it's awesome seeing him get this kind of recognition. He's definitely got my vote for Best Actor.
I find that for every one insightful thing Grace says on here, there are at least four things that I disagree with. We have wildly divergent tastes it seems. Some of her analysis and suggestions make zero sense to me. And this one just about takes the cake. Black Panther is about as much of a drama as Mission: Impossible was. I fully understand how culturally important the film is. It's a watershed moment. But I don't think cultural impact necessarily begets a win (or even a "should win") bestowed on works for their cinematic artistry. Relevance and art aren't the same thing, and I didn't feel that Black Panther was as compelling as other superhero works I've seen, particularly The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, Days of Future Past, Winter Soldier or even Jessica Jones's and Daredevil's first seasons. It was very good and very entertaining, but not, in my opinion, worthy of a best picture nod, let alone a win.
Grace has a one-track mind with movies. It's always comic book and mainstream fare with her. It's not a surprise she wants all the comic book movies to win every award.
As a HUGE marvel fan, even I can tell that Black Panthers nomination is more for publicity lol. But hey, if this is the step towards more comic book movies having the chance to be respected and nominated for awards in the future, I am all for that. And it shows in Spiderverse being nominated as well (although of course it has been getting so much praise)

A Quiet Place and Eighth Grade were some of the best movies of the year, and I'm really glad Elsie Fisher got nominated, but A Quiet Place was superb and deserved a nomination somewhere other than Score.

The Dark Knight is definitely the best comic-book movie ever but Black Panther is certainly better than Wonder Woman in nearly every single aspect, especially in characters (mostly the villain) and the story. I'm fine with BP's nomination but even I think it shouldn't and won't win.
Andy Parker With BP I kind of felt like something was missing; a certain gravitas in character and dialogue, that seems to be lacking in almost every MCU film, outside of a couple. WW was no Dark Knight in most respects, but it still had very good character moments that didn’t wholly concern the mission, and were lighthearted, but not directly jokey. I do give credit to BP for having the guts to break protocol, and actually have its hero directly kill his nemesis, though. It’s a good film, but still has that Disney feel to it somehow.
I've seen Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse here in Malaysia. Swear to god, as you said Grace, it was revolutionary. The animation was top notch, the storytelling was so fresh, ultimate Spidey goodness through and through. I can't stress enough how good Spider-Verse is. Everyone please go see it in theatres soon!
I haven't seen Into the Spider-Verse yet, but just on animation alone it should definitely win. Incredibles 2 is solid but the same, while Ralph 2 just had no heart. This sounds mean, but I hope Lin Manuel Miranda DOESN'T win. Maybe I'll change my mind once I see the film, but the trailers make him come off as very corny, and he shouldn't win just because "everyone loves him". He's super talented, he shouldn't need freebie awards. While I understand the sentiment, I don't like giving awards for "putting the time in". It's a competition dammit! The award should go to whoever is the best in the role they're nominated for. If you've been around for years and haven't won an award, then you might be good, but just not as good as the other actors and actresses :/

I don’t think Black Panther is a bad movie. I think IT IS AMAZING....but I don’t think it a best picture competition. If the Dark Knight was not nominated then the only reason Black panther was for Propriganda to please the audience.
A Star Is Born should and will win. Hands down for Shallow.
I feel like Shallow is kind of overrated. It's kind of a shallow song pun intended. The best song is actually the closing number. The best song nominated i think is Revelation. So much more artistry and symbolism. But Shallow will probably win and the movie will too
Phillip Lopez oh “ I’ll never love again” is for sure the best song on the album and in the movie. But “shallow” is going to get nominated for everything for its commercial success and show producers hope Gaga and Bradley will do a duet performance. Even though they are probably saving that for the Oscars.

To be honest I don't think Black Panther even deserves an oscar nomination even if the chances of winning aren't that high.
I don't mind it getting nominated but what I do mind is if that happens it having the distinction of being the first superhero film to get nominated for Best Picture when there have been far worthier ones in the past

If you are at all interested in animation, calling Mirai "from japan, a new animation studio" is kind of weird. Mamoru Hosoda is one of the biggest name directors in animation in japan. Wolf children, Summer Wars, Boy and the Beast, and Girl Who Lept Through Time, should all be evidence that Hosoda is one of the best directors in animation.
Basically, if you're going to put Makoto Shinkai on some kind of pedastal with "your name", we shouls also recognize Hosoda who has a longer more storied career.
Hosoda also did the Our War Game Part of Digimon The Movie. That was a sample to Summer Wars and started it all :)

Black Panther is a good movie, but shouldn't have been nominated for best picture. A project can have cultural relevance and dominate in its sub-genre, but still lack the fundamental strengths many other films have when it is evaluated as a film, and BP is one of them, in my opinion.
Good, Black Panther deserves recognition. I am so excited to see it win and award! Bohemian Rhapsody and Into the Spiderverse are both films I'm rooting for at well.

Bohemian Rhapsody, Eighth Grade, A Star is Born and Ready Player One were my favorite movies this year. Still have to watch Mary Poppins Returns, The Favourite and The Mule before the year ends. Very shocked The Mule wasn't nominated for anything! 😲

I find that for every one insightful thing Grace says on here, there are at least four things that I disagree with. We have wildly divergent tastes it seems. Some of her analysis and suggestions make zero sense to me. And this one just about takes the cake. Black Panther is about as much of a drama as Mission: Impossible was. I fully understand how culturally important the film is. It's a watershed moment. But I don't think cultural impact necessarily begets a win (or even a "should win") bestowed on works for their cinematic artistry. Relevance and art aren't the same thing, and I didn't feel that Black Panther was as compelling as other superhero works I've seen, particularly The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, Days of Future Past, Winter Soldier or even Jessica Jones's and Daredevil's first seasons. It was very good and very entertaining, but not, in my opinion, worthy of a best picture nod, let alone a win.
Grace has a one-track mind with movies. It's always comic book and mainstream fare with her. It's not a surprise she wants all the comic book movies to win every award.

It’s not even as good as the Dark Knight, or Wonder Woman, or nearly any of the other nominees. Black Klansman and A Star is Born are much better and deserving.
The Dark Knight is definitely the best comic-book movie ever but Black Panther is certainly better than Wonder Woman in nearly every single aspect, especially in characters (mostly the villain) and the story.
I'm fine with BP's nomination but even I think it shouldn't and won't win.
Andy Parker With BP I kind of felt like something was missing; a certain gravitas in character and dialogue, that seems to be lacking in almost every MCU film, outside of a couple. WW was no Dark Knight in most respects, but it still had very good character moments that didn’t wholly concern the mission, and were lighthearted, but not directly jokey.
I do give credit to BP for having the guts to break protocol, and actually have its hero directly kill his nemesis, though. It’s a good film, but still has that Disney feel to it somehow.

I've seen Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse here in Malaysia. Swear to god, as you said Grace, it was revolutionary. The animation was top notch, the storytelling was so fresh, ultimate Spidey goodness through and through. I can't stress enough how good Spider-Verse is. Everyone please go see it in theatres soon!
I haven't seen Into the Spider-Verse yet, but just on animation alone it should definitely win. Incredibles 2 is solid but the same, while Ralph 2 just had no heart. This sounds mean, but I hope Lin Manuel Miranda DOESN'T win. Maybe I'll change my mind once I see the film, but the trailers make him come off as very corny, and he shouldn't win just because "everyone loves him". He's super talented, he shouldn't need freebie awards.
While I understand the sentiment, I don't like giving awards for "putting the time in". It's a competition dammit! The award should go to whoever is the best in the role they're nominated for. If you've been around for years and haven't won an award, then you might be good, but just not as good as the other actors and actresses :/
