DIY Dog Agility Training At Home

Agility is so fun 😀
But we have to make it safe for our dogs, too!
The common approach of luring is not ideal for teaching jumps. If the dog is looking at the treat in our hand they cannot see where they’re going!
Placing the reward on the ground instead is a much safer and more effective way. Your dog will be able to plan the approach and jump.
Btw: the jumps in the reel are very low and this is not random 😀
You should start any jump training with low bars and gradually (!!) work your way up.
If you are making DIY jumps at home, always ensure that the bars are displaceable.
If your dog crashes into a jump something has to give way and it should NOT be your dog’s legs!!

For me I started with a low brick wall and asked my dog to scale it in some way, first he offered paws up on it, then to stand on it, then to jump over it entirely while being mindful of it, then he wanted to jump over every darn thing when we went out 😂 turned that into the over command instead of his separate "jump as high as you can" command 👍

Yes sometimes once they get it they want to offer jumping over anything they can!

The best piece of advice we've been given was to give a joint supplement to dogs that we have in training to try and prevent the development of arthritis in the future!

Yes! Definitely we want to take care of our dog's health and joints especially when we do sports with our pups :)

What if my dog is scared of the poles/goes around them/goes under? Tips? I want to build her confidence

Hi There!
I might start with the pole flat on the ground without the wings and reward for being around it, slowly working closer and eventually luring over. Then, as she gets more comfortable you can build up to a proper jump!
