  • Joust is an arcade game developed by Williams Electronics and released in 1982. While not the first game to feature two-player cooperative play, Joust was more successful than its predecessors and popularized the concept. The player uses a button and joystick to control a knight riding a flying ostrich. The object is to progress through levels by defeating groups of enemy knights riding buzzards.
John Newcomer led the development team, which included Bill Pfutzenreuter, Jan Hendricks, Python Anghelo, Tim Murphy, and John Kotlarik. Newcomer aimed to create a flying game with cooperative two-player gameplay, but wanted to avoid a space theme, which was popular at the time. Staff worked within the technical limitations of the hardware (originally developed two years earlier for Williams' first game, Defender), excluding concepts and optimizing the visuals.
The game was well received in arcades and by critics, who praised the gameplay, the mechanics of which influenced titles by other developers. Joust was followed by a sequel four years later, and was ported to numerous home and portable platforms.
This is an emulated arcade version using M.A.M.E.
    Captured and played at 60fps.
    Played at default arcade difficulty!
    Used in this gameplay video:
    PC hardware - AMD gpu
    Emulator - Mame
Controller - 10 button custom made arcade joystick
    Joystick: Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT
    Buttons: OBSF-30 with 2 microswitches
Keep it real, keep it retro!!!!

When I was a small kid my father would go play racket ball. At the facility there was a place that smelled like old carpet and cigarette smoke and beer. In this place there were two arcade games. the first was Ms. Pac Man and the second was Joust.
I'd ask my dad to take me to his racket ball games just so I could hang out in this lounge and watch the arcade run through its demo screens over and over. I never actually played the game but just seeing this video pulls me back to those early 80's when a glass of sprite and an hour of just watching a video game screen made my whole week feel special.
Oh to be a kid again, oh to feel the wonderment of watching something that captivates you like that game once did...

I use to lay this all the time back in the early 80s. You can kill the dragon with your lance straight in it's mouth.

You know very well that I've been looking for the good times myself. What I didn't know was that: the very first video game was constructed in 1947. Chuck Berry was 21 years old at that time. I haven't seen one man, woman, or child ever impersonate Chuck Berry. Did you notice that the video game industry has made more money than the music business did? That's what Chuck Berry has to do with the video game business. 🎮 🥌 🏑 🎲 🎴 🏀 🎮 💰 🤑 💸 💲 🪙 💶 💰 🎶 🎵 ⏹️ 🪕 🎼 💿 🎶 🤔 😳
