Russian Railways is clearly superior compared to Indian Railways in every aspect. Having traveled both to a good extent, Russian trains are very punctual even on the longest route, the trans-Siberian and the coaches and ride quality are much better on Russian Railways. Russia also has managed to build railways on the most difficult terrains like the Baikal-Amur line as well as Trans-Siberian. Russia not only has the Sapsan but also the Strizh and Lastochka which both run faster than the fastest train in India. Russian Firmeny type trains are much better than the Rajdhani or Duronto. The price comparison is meaningless as Indian Railways doesn’t have any equivalent of the Russian Spalny Vagon and the First AC is the same as RZD’s Kupe or Second Class, available on every train. The Russian Platzkartny Class ( 3rd Class) is comparable to the 2AC coaches of Indian Railways.. The number of metro cities is meaningless as only Moscow and St Petersburg have a population of over 5 million. Both have fantastic metros and Moscow metro station architecture is unrivaled. The Russian non high speed trains run at an speed of 120-130 kmph comparable to the premium trains of Indian Railways. One advantage I’ll give to Indian Railways is the online reservation system which off late works better than RZD. RZD still needs to improve on their online reservation system. On the pricing, I’ll give you a comparison. It costs about $350 to ride the Rossiya (Firmeny type) train from Moscow to Vladivostok (9290 kms) in Kupe Class, comparable to the 1AC. You can ride the same train on SV Class for about $680-700 and Indian Railways doesn’t have an equivalent. RZD also has the Lux compartment Class above the SV and available on select trains with en-suite bathroom and shower. Electrification is better on RZD. The entire length from Moscow-Vladivostok is electrified dual track and the Trans-Mongolian & Trans-Manchurian route runs on electrified line till they branch off into Mongolia and China. One last thing.... Russian trains are not only safe operationally but also very safe in terms of security which is not the case with Indian trains. Biggest problem with Indian trains is even on the reserved upper class coaches, the door is always left open and some jerkoff daredevil hanging by the door all the time. The Russian train doors remain closed except for stops and the Provodnitsas don’t mess around.

what is the point to compare railway systems by number of luxury trains? they are doubtedly can be considered as a part of a transport infrastructure based on real use case. how many of you have ever used those trains or at least would be able to afford that? it is just a shit for bragging about among some rich people and have no relation to any real indications of performing a particular railway system. any country can run even 100 ultra luxury trains that would beat the Indian ones, but who gonna really use them? for example, Russia's population is about 10 times less than Indian. Russia has 1 luxury train, means India has to have 10 luxury trains to be a winner. Sounds silly? Yes, as the whole comparison is. The same goes to the ticket prices comparison. India will be always the winner in this category, so this makes no sense at all. At least while there's no any relation between income of the country's citizens and the ticket prices. But even in this case India may be the winner as there are trains for the poorest people that cost almost nothing and have the same comfort level, while most of other countries just haven't such class of the service, thus making this kind of comparison not fair and as I said before, will always grant a point to India.
Indian railway did not approve it after the trials. As far as I know, Talgo won't be operational in India anytime soon unless they make the deal more attractive for Indian railways
