On October 6, 1973, Syria and Egypt launched simultaneous attacks on Israel on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar year and a major fast day. The conflict also took place during Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, and is also called the Ramadan War.
Syria attacked from the north, crossing the "Purple Line", the cease fire line determined after the 1967 Six Day War between Israel and Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq. Syrian forces captured most of the southern Golan Heights by October 7th. Egyptian troops attacked from the south, crossing the Suez Canal and breaching the Bar Lev Line, the Israeli defensive line on the eastern side of the canal. The Egyptian forces established a bridgehead there.
During the first few days of the war, Israel suffered a high casualty rate and extensive destruction of its equipment. By October 10th, Israeli armor and aircraft had begun to successfully attack an Egyptian tank brigade. Israeli forces also repulsed a Syrian assault.
In the United States, President Richard Nixon and his administration were concerned about instability in the region and that the increasingly successful Israeli response would draw in the Soviet Union, which was supplying arms to the Arab forces, if the Egyptian Army was destroyed. Additionally, they felt prospect of successful peace talks would be better if the forces were more evenly matched.
The United States Air Force launched a major military airlift of supplies and equipment to Israel, named Operation Nickel Grass, on Oct. 12th. President Nixon personally informed Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir of the operation.
By the end of October 1973, world leaders were pressuring the parties involved to stop fighting. United Nations Resolution 340 to that effect was passed on Oct. 25, 1973.

This report told us nothing. One cannot describe the human hand by going no further than pointing out its hang nail.
