【浜通りとは？】
「浜通り」は駿河湾沿岸に沿って南北に伸びるほぼまっすぐな街道と、その街道を中心に形成された南北約1.5km、東西約0.6kmの細長い集落を指す名称です。浜通りは、北から北浜通、城之腰、鰯ヶ島の3地区に分かれています。集落内には江戸時代に掘られ、かつては運河としても機能した堀川（黒石川）が北へ流れています。焼津漁港築港前は浜通りの砂利浜が河岸（かし）（湊（みなと））で、古くは廻船業でにぎわいました。徳川家康から船足の速い八丁櫓を許されて以降、カツオ漁業が大きく発展したと伝わります。交通の要所でもあり、江戸時代の地誌には、「漁家商家相交りて繁華なる土地なり、焼津湊云々」（『駿河記』）と当時の繁栄ぶりが記されています。その後、明治時代の東海道線焼津駅の開業、静岡での全国初の石油発動機付漁船の開発、漁船建造に必要な有力資本が焼津に成立したことなどにより、浜通りを中核として、焼津は遠洋カツオ漁業の先進地になりました。また、漁業の発展に伴って、鰹節に代表される水産加工業も一大飛躍を遂げました。焼津の名が全国に知られるようになったのは、浜通りで焼津漁業を盛り上げた先人たちの努力によるものといえます。明治時代の文豪、小泉八雲はこの地を愛し、夏になると浜通りの山口乙吉宅に泊まり、焼津にまつわる作品を残しました。浜通りが「八雲通り」とも呼ばれる由縁です。浜通りには沿岸部特有の伝統的家屋や小路、信仰の場所などが今も残っており、焼津の歴史と文化が息づいています。
【What is Hama-dori?】
“Hama-dori” is a main road that run north to south alongside Suruga Bay and it also refers to the area of the street with a long and thin settlement that runs 1.5km north to south and 0.6km east to west. Hama-dori is divided into three sections from the north－Kita-Hama-dori, Jonokoshi and Iwashigashima. In the settlement is Horikawa River (Kuroishigawa River), which was built in the Edo period as a canal. Before the Yaizu fishing harbor was built along Hama-dori, the gravel shoreline of the riverbank was busy with cargo vessels. Once Tokugawa Ieyasu permitted the use of the quick-moving ship Hacchoro, the katsuo (bonito) fishing industry really started to take off. As it was a necessary to the flow of traffic, Yaizu flourished in the Edo period as “Yaizu Harbor, the bustling fishing and merchant area” (Suruga Record). After that, construction of Yaizu Station on the Tokaido Line started and Shizuoka developed the first oil engine fishing boat in the country. Necessary funds for this project came to Yaizu, so with Hama-dori as the focus point, Yaizu became a leader in deep-sea katsuo fishing. As fishing became a major industry, katsubushi(dried bonito flakes) became an extremely important product representative of the fishing industry in Yaizu. The area became known all over Japan, and the Yaizu fishing industry boomed thanks to the efforts of these pioneering fisherman. In the Meiji period, literary Yakumo Koizumi fell in love with Yaizu and stayed at Otokichi Yamaguchi' s house during the summer. Stories he wrote related to Yaizu still remain to this day.
Hama-dori is sometimes called “Yakumo-dori” because of him. Hama-dori has traditional houses, alleys and places of spiritual importance that are found in coastal areas still remain as well. Yaizu's history and culture are still alive to this day.
