Great Post Mark, I've never fed my tree fern but after watching this video on how these ferns get nutrition in nature, I will begin feeding from spring!! Thanks Robbie.
Your fern trees are beautiful to look at and you take great care of them in winter. I'm on the Dingle Peninsula, with only very rare frosts. ......so I'm giving the tree ferns a go. And yes they are expensive so it's worth taking great care of them.
Thanks Richard, i certainly will, there will be a video of laying the new circular patio and then one of planting all the ferns, then an update as they all grow together into a jungle. Mark
Hey Mark 👋 That 7ft DA is a beast mate 👏👏👏 🌴🌴🌴 I have three DA, and I followed your tips on wrapping it for last year, and living in Carnoustie on the East Coast of Scotland, I am leaving mine until next week as the temp is dropping tomorrow and we may get snow and frosts. 😬😬😬 that new area you are creating will be very lush and nice and cool in the hot summer months 👍👍😎😎 Great video and very helpful as always mate.
Colin. Thank you so much. The 7 foot one is SCARY lol. Btw. I couldn't find you on instagram, there were lots with your name. So i never found the picture we discussed. Mark
@@colinwilson7134 i am on instagram, although i don't really understand it yet. Marksgardenuk. The delivery guy manhandled it alone with a sack truck. But it took two of us to lift it and position it. Hard work.
I have a tree fern that has 3 trunks side by side in one pot this is how i purchased it ten years age I wondered if its possible to split them up without killing them . Thanks Chris
Hi Chris. In theory you would have thought it should be possible. I imagine that actually they must just be three plants very close together. If you're intent on trying it (depending on how big they are) I'd take a saw or chainsaw to them. Mark
Hi Mark. I have my DA plant for few years now. Was growing well. Last winter, i pruned all the leaves, after seeing thoes trunks in a garden centre without leaves. afterwards, mine never produced any leaves. But i can feel fonds like structures in the crown. Will it come back?
Hi Mark loving the videos can you tell me how often you water the plant in the winter when it's all wrapped up ? and do you just water the crown ? I'm a little worried about watering in the winter if the water which is trapped in the leafs freezers thank you
Hi gaynor, i don't water them in the winter. But because they are outside and have a small handfull of leaves in the grown they do recieve a little rain, which stops them drying out. I do check them to make sure they are moist but not wet. I agree with your concern about letting them freeze if very wet. It's a fine balance lol. Something i do worry about sometines. Mark
Hi Mike. And thank you. We've actually bought quite a few things through Facebook marketplace recently. A tree fern from The Palm Tree company (online), olive trees from Morrisons, cannas from home bargains, box plants from best4hedging (online). There's a great garden centre for large olive trees and some tree ferns near juntion 15 m6, I'll get the name and come back to you. Also, there's a nice walled garden centre near comberbatch in Marbury country park. So, i suppose it's all a bit of a hotch potch. Where have you already found which is good? Mark
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK sounds good, I’d be interested to hear the name of the place off the m6, there’s a place in Knutsford called grasslands nursery which I have used in the past, I also discovered the one in Marbury recently I thought it was great there, picked up a canna and a few jasmine climbers, they have a good selection of bananas there too by the looks!
Oh yes, i forgot grasslands, although i feel it has gone expensive. A nice day out though. I think I've linked that garden centre in one of the tree fern videos. I'll find it and let you know. Worth a trip.

Hi just got a similar 7 feet plant - not showing any signs of life after planting in April . Is it right to water in the crown or just the outside trunk ??
Hi Andy. Yes water BOTH inside the crown and outside the trunk. Also be patient. I have one that did nothing all last year but now has seven new fronds.

Hi Robert. I really do think it makes a big difference to frond production. I'd be interested to hear how you get on next year. Mark

When you cover the tree ferns do you give water from the top, but leave the covers without removing them.
I put leaves gently into the top the rain water soaks into the crown. I don't water it in the winter

Do you leave the covers on for the whole of Winter?
Yes. Until the risk of frost is gone. In reality they may survive without protection but i don't want to take the risk.
What is best spot to plant a fern trees in Australia
They do best in damp shady locations.
