- this is the first one for this channel and i will be posting on sundays every Sunday from now on. i hope to refine this style of video and continue to give back to my fans. thank you all so much for being you.
Agree about the 'stay in school' comment, to a point.
First off, I HATED school with a passion (mostly because most of the kids I went to school with in our podunk town were complete ASSHOLES). I could make a "passing grade" just by listening; didn't really have to study much or work hard to make at least a passing grade. In some classes I could even make A's without really trying. I hated school because SO much of it was a COMPLETE waste of time-- I learned WAY more on my own just reading books about things that interested me than I EVER learned in school. Plus, I took over the farms within a couple years of my Granddad dying when I was 12 years old... I moved in with my Grandmother and my Dad was working full time, so it fell to me. By the time I got my driver's license I was pretty much doing it all, with a little help during planting and harvest from my Dad. Course, back in the 80's, we didn't have "mandatory" attendance requirements like they have now... I typically missed between 20-30 days of school a year working in the fields, particularly during harvest and planting and doing land work in the spring. SO long as I had a passing grade, it didn't really matter how many days I missed.
That said, if I were in school NOW, I'd probably end up dropping out and getting my GED (general equivalency diploma, for those who aren't aware of what that is... basically it's a series of classes you take (sorta like adult education classes) and then you take a test and it gives you the "equivalent" of a high school diploma). I KNEW I was NOT interested in going to college AT ALL once I finished high school. I just wanted to be a farmer. I realized I might have to supplement my income with an off-farm job, and I DID get some secondary education, mostly from a mechanic's scholarship I won in FFA in high school as the champion at the State Tractor Mechanic's Contest in 1988 when I was a junior in high school. I got a full ride to a technical school, so of course I took it. Main thing I learned was I didn't want to bend wrenches the rest of my life... (though I still use my training to this day, but as a career... not so much. Of course I graduated in late spring 1991 when the economy was in the tank and all the soldiers were coming back from Gulf War 1 (Desert Storm) and a lot were mustering out and there were NO JOBS to be had...) My class (of '89) was the first in the state to be required to pass a state exam to get a HS diploma. Some of the kids couldn't do it. Basically in the grand scheme of things, all a HS diploma is worth anymore is maybe wiping your ass-- NO employers consider a HS diploma as "worth anything" education wise anymore. SO, a GED is about the same when it comes to "education" in the eyes of employers... most now want college, despite the fact that college really does little/nothing to make an employee be able to do a damn thing... LOL:) Another thing the schools have done is they've made these MANDATORY attendance requirements that state that if you miss more than say about 8-10 days of school a year, you have to repeat that grade level, EVEN IF your grades in those classes were straight A's... That's patently ridiculous... If someone told me I'd have to repeat a grade when I passed everything with at least a 70, just because of "missing too many days" I'd just quit school. I couldn't have taken that much school, and it just didn't fit with working on the farm. So if I were in school now, I'd probably quit school just on the basis of that idiocy alone...
The other thing is, the schools have mandated so many stupid things, like REQUIRING advanced math classes (even for the non-college prep diploma program versus the college-prep advanced diploma or honors diploma programs), a lot of fine arts (bullshit classes), and foreign languages (fuck that shit... If I go to your country, I speak your language (or damn well try and let you laugh at me), you come here you "speak 'Murican" or get the fuck out IMHO). If you can't speak "Murican" and you're trying to live here, then to hell with you IMHO-- I don't need to deal with you. Anyway, I had ZERO interest in band or other "fine arts" bullshit, I liked ag classes, science (to a point), drafting and mechanical drawing, and that was about it... I DID enjoy working in the library for two years... :) At any rate, some kids REALLY struggle with these sorts of classes... I know *I* struggled to pass algebra... couldn't coast through that one! Then of course the schools want to turn everyone into "good little Nazi's" that conform to whatever they consider "acceptable" and I never liked that horseshit, either. Teachers can be real bastards at times... They were always overloading us with homework-- about 3-4 hours a night. I was always like "fuck that" because like my Dad working at the nuke plant-- he worked long hours, and sometimes overtime (if he wanted it, which he usually did for extra money) BUT when the "whistle blew" work was over and HE WAS ON HIS OWN TIME! I felt the EXACT same way about school-- when the bell rings in the morning I gotta be there, but dammit when it rings in the afternoon FUCK IT I'M ON MY OWN TIME!!! Homework impinged on MY time, usually time I was spending on a tractor anyway. I didn't screw off in school-- I ate and then did homework during lunch, didn't yakk and fuck around in class talking and screwing around-- I did my friggin' homework. Hell I did half my homework on the bus on the ride home. Basically, if it couldn't get done during the day or on the bus to/from school, the homework just flat didn't GET DONE... to hell with it was my opinion... Then they passed this rule called "zeroes aren't permitted" and you couldn't NOT turn in homework, so I'd just play "dot to dot" and turn in bullshit that took me about 2 minutes to fill out, not caring if it was right, wrong, or indifferent. Anyway, because of all this horseshit, I'd probably quit school if I were in school today...
Then there's the kids that genuinely struggle in school... some of them struggle just to pass... My nephew was one of them. He has ADHD and was struggling in school-- farm kid thru and thru, so he wasn't exactly "school material" to begin with. He knew he wanted to work in the ag industry (for a co-op, driving equipment or driving semis or whatever) and wasn't interested in going to college or anything like that. The teachers were supposed to do all these "mods" to his 'education plan' to help him pass, but basically they wouldn't follow through and do what they were supposed to... he'd get frustrated because he didn't understand the work and then acted up or acted out... so they made his life hell... He FINALLY said "fuck it" and quit school, because he realized it was basically just a waste of time to continue. He's NOT dumb-- he went and took the GED courses and got his GED in like record time and completely ACED it, and went to work for the local co-op at the same time and was actually MAKING money and gaining valuable experience while most of his classmates were still screwing around in school. Now he's working for a large co-op running fancy GPS type spreaders and sprayers and machinery and driving semis and makes a good living. SO, it CAN be done...
I know a friend of mine up the road tried FOUR TIMES to pass the stupid state exams to get his HS diploma... he always had a passing grade in school, but he just COULD NOT pass the damn state tests, without which you "weren't allowed" to graduate. SO, halfway through his senior year, he took the tests the fourth time and didn't pass, so the next day he came in and quit school... went and got his GED and went to work for Wal Mart and now he's a department manager... makes a pretty good living actually. So, it CAN be done...
I think it's better if one CAN stay in school, BUT, if it's just too much of a struggle or too difficult, then there comes a time when one probably SHOULD quit, get the GED, and move on with their life. Get some technical schooling in something that interests you, get a job, get some training, get some on-the-job experience, knuckle down and get the job done, as that counts for WAY MORE than some scrap of paper... but it IS true that the 'scrap of paper' opens the door for you... so AT LEAST get the GED... some post-secondary education of some type (technical school, etc) is also really helpful to get your foot in the door...
Later! OL J R :)
Wesley you are 100% correct on the issue of milk quotas they safeguarded the future of the smaller dairy farmer I’m over here in Ireland and I’m fed up of looking at beef and tillage farmers getting into 200 plus herds of cows while the 50 to 100 cow herd will suffer, the quota has to come back in the EU
Hi two questions:1. If you had used two balers this last year what do you think your total bale count would be with first, second and third cut? Tim or ? on one baler and you on the other.2. Why do you use "hay wagons" instead of buying two additional trailers and wheel dollies that would connect to the tractors and then connect to your trucks saving you the unload and reloading time?
Love the new format channel, it is a great addition to your already established channel.
Yea come to Wales maybe do a meet and greet. Solid people in Wales. This Q&A is great as you have covered so many subjects. Thanks
Really like this new channel! Just a suggestion for you, what if you maybe turn this into a podcast like thing? Like bring Ryan and Travis Kuster, Iowadairyboys, cotontop3, and other farm related youtubes on board for different episodes to discuss things in agriculture today? Just an idea I thought I'd through out there
Really enjoyed this as I do a few things around the house, Wes! Keep it up!
What are your goals for the next 10 years of farming?
Ryan and his brother have all the liberty to choose what their "farm day" is supposed to be but, wouldn't you say that besides meeting them the fans were probably looking forward to some farm talk? like a Q&A or stories? or, such as in your case, a display of the machinery and some stories about them? I know for sure that a lot of your subs would be interested in hearing stories involving your older tractors
Looking forward to the next time.. Thanks for sharing Wes..
Hi wes , I’m a 16 year old kid from upstate ny as you can tell by my name I have always wanted to as you a few questions on the farm ,so wes what do see for the farm in the future ? Another question I have had is your dad is an old farmer and I’m sure he has a lot of stories about the farm and life itself ,idk if he would wanna be on camera but it would be cool if you guys could sit down together and tell stories about the past of you guys farming and stuff . Thank you again wes
Love the work you do. Keep up all your great work. P.s. i love the idea of your new channel
Can you do a q&a about house development on farmland because today in time period their building a lot of houses on huge 100 acre farm
In 1974 I was 2 years old as well and cant remember it personally but heard it was the ''golden years'' of farming!
i am not a farmer so sorry if my question is a dumb one. so my question is why do you buy tractors from Germany or other countrys?? and what size is your shop?
Good video, thanks for sharing your knowledge Wes.
How much potash and fertilizer per acre did you apply to the fields this year and what type of fertilizer do you recommend for existing hay fields of orchard grass and clover
I really like the format for the new channel. My question is do you and Teresa have any plans to visit @cotontop3 over the winter months. I really enjoyed the collaboration between the channels on farm day. I think you and cotontop could get into some trouble in his neck of the woods.
David Natale id like to see that too.
Would you consider demoing a telehandler? With the number of viewers you have, getting a machine to try out for a while should be possible. You can also get those with PTO and lifting arms on the back, so it can be used for raking and other tractor tasks.
Thanks for the response with the mahindra. I have a, i believe 40hp, 4535 4x4 mahindra open cab for shredding 20 acres. I cant keep up with it and its rough. Takes a day and a half to shred down 15 acres thats cleared. Nonstop on the tractor at 9am til about 10pm. Sometimes getting off exteremly dehydrated which isnt good for the kidneys. Especially when youre out of chemo for just over 3/4 of a year. I havnt had any issues with the tractor, but wanted to see what a much larger farmer thought of the brand as ive only worked on farms cattle farms of 50-100 acres running small 30hp Fords. Been looking at a tractor upgrade, being one of the 80-110hp enclosed mahindra with a batwing, baler, and cutter bar. plan on keeping the smaller mahindra around for a barn/around the house/ larger garden tractor. Currently trying to repair/rebuild fencses, a cattle pin and get a barn up to buy cattle. Wanting to gain more ground in the future if its decently priced.
Hey Wes! I have 3 questions and would like to know -
1)will you buy krone tractor pulled mover or big krone m
2)have you thought building bigger dairy farm and milking cows in bigger scale, because you already have ground, equipment and feed for them
3) how do you like Soviet union tractors?
Rego is a term we use in New Zealand and I expect other places too. In the States you call it Paying for your tags. In NZ it stands for motor vehicle registration. Basicly a licence for a specific vehicle rather than a drivers licence.
I'm becoming more of a fan of wide flotation tires on tractors over duals. I know some row crop applications require narrow tires, but otherwise, the wides seem better, such as in your operation. Thoughts?
Its funny since the quota has lifted that the milk prices are the highest with years, far from many have been fucked over. Average cow size in my area has raised by 12 cows in the last 5 years, cannot see it have thousand cows farms everywhere. Its is forecasted that farm number will stay the same but cow numbers will rise so some smaller farmers will leave with the bigger farms replacing but it wont be drastic changes
Brace yourself it’s coming
What type of camera mounts or gimbals do you have? I have tried taking video from moving trucks and equipment, it's never so steady.
Just out of curiosity, with you having the Weird Deere and the 730 lpg, if you ran across a John Deere R or an 80 diesel reasonably priced, would you consider getting it? I know they would be pricey, but the R was the first diesel tractor John Deere made, but it is a piece of John Deere history
lol by the half way mark of this video i was finger tapping my own damn desk lmao,,,,,,good stuff wes keep up the great work
I enjoy this channel. The talking. I Woukd like to meet you in the uk. I’m in Norfolk
When the 7410 burns out what’s gonna be next? 8120 with H480 ?
Have you ever thought about doing a live stream on this channel for this ? How did you learn how to play the banjo
Hey Wes... just found this channel.. i noticed u were talkin milk quotas , although i dont have an understanding how that system works i can tell u that living in New Brunswick close to the Maine border that a lot of people in the area buy big quantities of milk in the US because the price here is about double ($4.50 per half gallon ) Most everything here is more for example gas, beer , auto parts and the lower Canadian dollar has most of the blame but never really reflects price of the goods. Its the government that triple taxes the shit outta everything . Maine gas comes from here and is usually alot less
Very enjoyable, I wish I knew enough to ask questions but you need to have a clue to ask. 🙂🙂
Hey Wes, really enjoy the Q&A channel!
Have you looked into the John deer big square baler? would you do a review on one if you came across one, or maybe even demo one if you got a chance?
LOL I was worried about this new channel, I had visions of Wes sitting in front of the camera with no clothes on!
I like going on vacation but I always worry about the form the whole time I'm away from it so I'm always glad to be back
Hay Wes I live and work in Ireland milking 100 cows spring calving just wondering when you were milking were your cows housed all year round or just over the winter months?
Good luck on your new channel I love to tinker on whatever but it’s cool to see a well rounded person like yourself giving your time on lots of good stuff you just dig in hats off to you Wes Napa mike 👍

Hi Wes what about the cat 955? I have been waiting to see it running . from the time you got it
Great channel... suggestion. Hoping you could reduce the.desk slapping,lol...just a mall thing but it irritating !! I
If you get a larger lime spreader would you also get a larger skid steer bucket to load quicker?
Would you ever consider using artic trailers on tractors with air brakes like JWB, to move more bales safer?
Good job Wes
What is the nicest feature on your krone baler over the competition and why?.
Great job Wes very informative
6:54 thats what happend to us with the milking end and fields once a 600 acre farm is now 100
I have two hundred acres one hundred in woods one hundred in field, I have put a notification in the leas contract stating the lease must get approval for me before applying any chemical or additives to the field. Since I have had several inquiry on my field from farmers but no takers.
Is there some reason farmers balk on this requirement or why would this be a problem in your opinion. Please don't hold back let me know if this is stupid or not?
Have ever tried or thought of using hay mergers instead of rakes when you don't need to ted? If so why do you like rakes better?
Good deal, thanks
Steiner tractor parts i have heard is a great place for parts too.
That was great , did you ever get the Cat freed up ,any rebuilds planed?
Wes Is it Worth it to get into farming anymore? Despite what everyone else tells me. It just hard to get away from something that’s in your blood.
Agreed on those rotary rakes, and why don’t you look at a John Deere 544k front loader?
I like this channel too.
A good start of the channel.
What ever happened to the bolt in your F 550 motor
Thanks Wes for this type video & leaving out the profanity. I know I have talked roughly in the comments, but nobody has to hear them on video.
what do you base your projections on for future growth in the mushroom/ compost business?
My son (19) wants to start a dairy. we own about 300 acres of pasture land we've used in beef production. Do you have any advice? college, AI, breeds, etc.... We are in South Louisiana
Keep on being Wes.
hear in uk and europe ploughing is a verry common practice and i highly dis agree its a think of the past. i think alot of the reason us doesnt commonly plough is because of the masive farm sizees and it isnt worth it as mutch as it is hear

Good start to the new channel. Wonder how long it'll take for the trolls to appear....
Thanks for the answer on the permits Wes. Wasn't sure if NJ had eliminated the depredation permits. NY seems to have the same attitude about them these days...
Do you pay Tim an hourly rate or does he get paid by how much he gets done, does he get paid at all? Been enjoying your channel for a long time, and like this new one subbed right away.
hi Wes! I´m wondering about how many hours you get on our tractors in a year? i have a Fendt 818 vario that I get about 1000 hours/year on and it has 11500 hours total now, If you ever come to Finland you are more than welcome to visit my farm thanks for a great videos and long live farmers :)
On a good note why no heated shop? I hate cold tools.

Does or is Tim going to get his cdl? So when you working on the dozer build.
What is the difference between Regular Tractor Tires and tracks?
i saw you video today, and i have a stupid question. i love corn on the cob, or any type of corn really. now i have never been by a corn plant, but when i get Chinese food, they have the small ears of corn it it. love them. are they from the same corn plant that farmers grow, and is there a different way to harvest them. you can make fun of this question, i don't care, i am a ball buster also. but i am serious with the question. thanks wes
so you do like the government in farming (as long as it helps you)
My PTO will not disengage on my 1967 4020 Powershift. What do I need to do to fix it?
greyghostkoga Split that tractor or just check the cable linkage could be broken but after checking the cable linkage then you might have to split the tractor anyway
Excellent
whats one thing to help a hay buisness grow. we do alot of custom hay for people but were wanting to grow the buisness

Wes we have Massey Ferguson 90hp tractor we bought it brand new after many years of hard work pulling a 12ft cultimulcher and grain drill the engine is not what it used to be was wondering if you think it would be better to sell/trade it off for a new one or rebuild the engine it has rufly 6000h on it and looks to tuff but is mechanical sound

I don’t think that was Wes tractor, I am pretty sure he repaired it for a neighbor
Morning Wes, you've shown a lot of the farm and buildings over the years, could you possibly do an air view of the farm ? It'd be cool to see how it's actually set up. My wife's family lives in Flemington, maybe next time I come up we can grab a cup of joe. Been a fan since the beginning, thanks for the years of entertainment. Be safe.
Try Google earth. I found the farm there.
Ad van der Velden
Brain fart, never thought of that lol. Thanks. Cheers.
Noel Stevenson I also remember him putting a drone up over the farm in one of his videos. Was a great shot over the farmstead.
FarmerTom08
I kind of remember also,I can only go back so far on my tablet. I found it on Google. I've been taking ideas from numerous farms for display ideas.
Do you miss Driving the combine ? I haven't driven one for 3 years and i Realy miss it !!
Wes do you ever want to go into any type of livestock like beef cows or something else.
