斗南順安宮大陸湄州聖二媽，俗稱菜埔媽的由來，其實是由全台灣各地信徒來此進香後所取名的外號，斗南老在地人其實也是聽外地曾經來進香過的朋友講的，最早最早以前曾有流傳這樣的真實故事，就是一位遠地的朋友曾經來進香有在外面跟賣菜捕的攤販買菜補，當時不流行網路購物，就打電話請居住在斗南的朋友協助幫忙買，當時那位斗南的朋友根本不知道菜補媽，只知道斗南順安宮聖二媽，菜補媽這暱稱就這樣傳開........，斗南菜補最大的產區其實在隔壁的大埤鄉產量最大，因為大埤鄉人口稀少賺錢不易，所以製作菜補的農人就從大埤挑著扁擔一路走到斗南順安宮前擺攤...........，斗南舊名他里霧這個地方原來是平埔族原住民的故鄉，後來因為虎尾、斗六糖廠.....等等五分仔車載運甘蔗的轉運站(斗南火車站)，斗南這個地方他就是集結了全台各地方人士置產定居而形成的一個商圈
