They are not harmless. Two years ago two gals had one take a bite out of the nose of their kayak and were almost thrown out. This is really ill advised to tell people to go out with their kayaks and get close to the sharks. They are really nice and cuddly and misunderstood. No, no, no. Nature is not like TV. It can be very, very dangerous. Surfers commonly lose limbs and life to sharks, and like everyone else, should get the heck out when they are present.
I understand some people may really love or be fascinated by sharks, but can we please not promote them as being harmless creatures? They’re gigantic creatures that will absolutely love to take a chunk out of your kayak if it means being able to turn you into a snack.
With that said... people need to be smart about things. If you kayak or surf near seals your chances of encountering a shark if much greater. Great Whites are just looking for their normal prey. Respect their territory. Keep in mind... on average there are about 80 attacks per year by sharks on people around the world, and of that number roughly 5 fatalities. That's a very small number considering there are millions of people in the water, yet very few attacks. If sharks were really trying to take people out there would be hundreds of attacks a day, yet nothing like that happens.
This isn't shocking to me especially in Monterey, bay at all. Was born and raised there generations of my family from Monterey mom and dad's side. My great grandfather fished those waters and saw many. I used to run Del Monte Beach everyday for years, saw three of them breach while hunting three times in my life it's something to see. Carmel beach, P.G. and Monastery they are all over. Tons of seal rockeries lots of great whites. Moved a while back and when I go back to the beach I stay on shore wouldn't dip a toe in that water.ever. Orcas do stay there for long periods of time hunting too. Marine sanctuary for a reason.
@David Erickson Brilliant move, I've seen four breach in my life hunting for seals and they were all around Monterey. Won't dip a toe in that water even Del Monte Beach. From most estimations there's at least over a dozen of them in that bay and at pupping season many more .
There is a video of a shark attack in Monterey bay and it is terrible. A man is in a kayak then the shark knocked him out of the boat and took the boat swimming with it before returning and attacking the guy. Idiots who witnessed it did not even call anyone until the guy had no chance of being helped ,but they got their stinking video
Thats a good thing Shark populations all over the world are declining. People just need to be careful and be aware. They are not harmless and you are on their turf.
I was saying it's a good thing that sightings are on the rise because that means there are more sharks around. So I think you and I are on the same page.
They already have the upper hand. Humans are not at the top of the food chain on land or in water. We’re the most intelligent but with how fragile and defenseless we are compared to other species, we don’t stand a chance 😂
Sharks do eat poeple it's matter of when!!! Will it happen...don't joke yourselves California authority you just don't want to take any task that might cost you money to takkle these unpredicted man eaters.
It's their environment not ours. Sick of man thinking they own everything and can kill everything without consequence. The definition of a selfish arse hole mentality! We enter their world, that's our fault, not theirs. Would you jump into an enclosure with Tigers or Hippos... no no you wouldn't as they could kill you. We kill millions every day and they're the problem. Please!
When a shark is hungry, and a human being is accessible, pass the salt.
Why?

john pyskaty Exactly. I don’t think sharks be hunted down and killed however that doesn’t make them safe to be around.
The most stupid commnt yet

Exactly right. They are dangerous and should be feared.
Is this stopping some people from scuba diving?
I dont know why people are shocked. Grandpa worked as a fisherman in moss landing and seen them a lot. As stingrays

70-80 million sharks are killed every year so that they can have a bowl of soup in china , fkin scum bags .
