I regret not doing research during my undergrad. I was just really intimidated!:/ Now I have graduated and am looking for research opportunities and working.
im a research assistant as well in psychology I love it! I conducted research for different departments. I chose the art department. I dont get paid but it goes towards my internship hours which is nice.
no I am a psychology department Research assistant and we choose departments to help collaborate educational studies with and I work with the studio arts department to help engage students. however I am based out of psychology department. : :) glad u enjoy your program.
sky girl love Awh I forgot I posted this. I loved my job so much. I just graduated last month and my student employment ended. I’m actually interviewing tomorrow to become a research coordinator!
Thanks a lot for this video! I just recently found out about Research Assistants and it sounds like the perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door in the research world of psychology. Hopefully I can do something with consciousness or Psilocybin research as a cure for mental disorders!
I'm going to be applying for research lab sometime next summer. So, I'm trying to look for a research lab that I'll be enthusiastic about learning in. Thank you for creating this!!
Dear Olivia, do you know that, while you are doing the data verification, actually there is a module by IBM witch allow you to design your research instrument and later you can just scan the survey forms and all the data will go directly in SPSS. (Pre-setup data file is needed). The beauty of it is you can save alot of time in data entry and increase the accuracy. Hope this help.
I'm meeting with a professor on campus tomorrow to do research with her, this video got me so excited!! But I have a quick question. Did you dress up for your interview? Or were you dressed like if it were a regular school day?
If she said not to, then I wouldn't! you could always have a copy in your bag just in case she asks for it, but if she said don't bring anything then you're probably fine. It's up to you!
Hi Olivia, Would you mind to tell me more about the interview question? Like provide me more example on what they’ll ask? Will they ask questions like those from common interview (how do you see yourself in 5 years and etc)? Thanks
This is helpful... does being a researcher limit you in the field? I’m already an lmhc. I know about being a clinician. I just mean as far as the job market. What jobs are open to researchers?
I have a BS in Small Business & Entrepreneurship and just applied for a Masters in General Psychology Concentration in Life Coach. Can I get a PhD in Research Psychology or Trauma Studies?
That's awesome!! So a PhD is a research degree, but typically you'll have a concentration in something. For example, your degree might just say "PhD in Psychology" but really you'll be an expert in Developmental Psych, Social Psych, or another topic. All you can do is search around different universities' websites and see what type of programs they have! Looking at professor's research is also a great way to know what exactly they study and what you might learn from them. There are psychologists who study trauma, for example Gail Goodman at UC Davis studies childhood eyewitness accounts which often includes some type of trauma to the child. The Ph.D. at Davis isn't called "trauma studies" but you could definitely learn a lot about that area by working with her. That's just an example though! Check out different programs would be my advice!
Tks for sharing Olivia! Can I look for a RA job after graduating college? Also, is it easy/reasonable to find an RA at a lab other than the one I graduated from?
I can't figure the message portion out but I wanted to know if you could share with me some qualifications I could use for my experimental research assistant resume that would get me in the doors at a great lab. Btw my school is fully online.
My experience is only with university research labs, in which case the qualifications they look for are: that you've taken a research methods class, have good grades, and are available for meetings! Of course organizational skills and any office work ESPECIALLY EXCEL is going to help! Again, my experience is only with getting a position in a university lab as a student research assistant, but hopefully this helps! :) I would look on Linked In at research assistant positions and see what skills they're looking for. good luck!
DonnieDarko Requiem mmm I don't really think it'd be an advantage. It takes a weekend to complete and you usually have enough time between when you're hired and when you actually start. It's convenient once you have it, but I don't think they'd pick (Or not pick) someone over it
All the research assistants I've known have received units for research rather than pay. I personally don't know of any labs that offer work/study (ie paid) but you never know!
So i was wondering olivia to work as a researcher in psychology what are the educational requirements like a bachelors in psych. A masters etc and whats the scope for research in paychology ?
It depends on where you want to work. If you want to be a research assistant at a university lab, you usually need a bachelor's degree (although there are positions if you are currently an undergrad). If you want to be a head researcher at a university or for a federal agency for example, you need a Ph.D. Advertising agencies for example usually only require a Master's degree. It really depends on the field of work!
The only advice I have would be to contact the internship center at your school or the counselors in the psych department if you're looking for a research internship.... if looking for more applied / mental health internships then I would just start searching community mental health centers and seeing what jobs they have posted! haha sorry, I'm not much help on that!
Hello, how are you? I am a Psychology student looking to get a job as a research assistant and I would love to network and ask you a bunch of questions, please! I would like to know if we could exchange emails or phone numbers. I look forward to hearing back from you!
It's always so hard to find psychology related videos like this
thanks
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching!

It seems SO intimidating at first! That's so great you're working towards that now, though! Good luck finding a lab!! and thanks for watching :)

Thank you!!

Ooh congrats! Good luck! Yes, dress up! I wore business casual, so a nice blouse, trousers, and ballet flats. Also take a copy of your resume!
Olivia_Simone thank you!! Should I still take a resume if she told me not to take anything? I want to, but I don't want to seem disrespectful either.
If she said not to, then I wouldn't! you could always have a copy in your bag just in case she asks for it, but if she said don't bring anything then you're probably fine. It's up to you!
Olivia_Simone thank you for your help! I got in! 😄
CONGRATS!!!!!
This video was really helpful, thank you!
I'm so glad! You're welcome :) Thanks for watching!
Hi Olivia,
Would you mind to tell me more about the interview question? Like provide me more example on what they’ll ask? Will they ask questions like those from common interview (how do you see yourself in 5 years and etc)?
Thanks
It's going to be different depending on the interviewer and position!
Brilliant!!
This is helpful... does being a researcher limit you in the field? I’m already an lmhc. I know about being a clinician. I just mean as far as the job market. What jobs are open to researchers?
There are tons of research jobs! Mainly at universities but also some government and military positions available.
Came for the video, stayed for the 5sos shirt
Also I know I’m 4 years late ahahah
Better late than never 😂

Olivia Simone Thank you Olivia this is so helpful and encouraging!! I wish you well with your studies!
you too!
I have an upcoming interview for a volunteer RA. What should I wear? Do you recommend business formal or casual like jeans and such?
Don't know if you've already had the interview, but business casual is probably best! Good luck!
Tks for sharing Olivia! Can I look for a RA job after graduating college? Also, is it easy/reasonable to find an RA at a lab other than the one I graduated from?
You can! I suggest going to higheredjobs.com and seeing what research assistant positions are available!!
Hello and thanks for the video! Does it work the same way for international students? Thanks in advance.
I believe it does! I've worked with multiple RA's and undergraduate TA's that are international students!
Olivia_Simone that's great. I 'll look into it. Thanks!

Would you say that getting the certification before the interview is an advantage? (showing initiative and what not)

Ok good. Is work-study research for undergrad rare? It was an option in the application process. just curious.
All the research assistants I've known have received units for research rather than pay. I personally don't know of any labs that offer work/study (ie paid) but you never know!
What’s a good certification to get?
