- In this video we are taking a look at the Cammus C5 wheelbase which is the cheapest Direct Drive unit on the market right now, and the worlds first direct drive unit with an external rotor motor!
At first I thought this was a gimmick, but this design has enabled Cammus to offer this to us guys at a super low price which potentially changes the landscape completely.

With the price of 'nice things' heading skywards, this is a clever idea to cut costs and
make DD more accessible. It's just a pity they don't do a Dave Cammus Special Edition!
I think this is great, the sim racing community needs more entry level options in the direct drive department, if I were just getting started I definitely would have chose this over the Logitech G923 and I would have saved money
I was just thinking that. I would have gotten this over a g29 any day.
Need to buy some pedals as well though remember
@@BoosiveFPV I’m pretty certain with the pedals is still cheaper or closely matched , Dave did list the prices including pedals
@WayWorthRacing yeh but they look shite 😂. Worse than logitech's. They look similar to the ones I got with the moza r5 bundle. Which I tried once but swiftly replaced with the vrs pedals.
This will probably break sooner than a g29 though . I'd bet on that.
Mine arrives tomorrow. It will be the best wheel I've ever used but then, it will be the first wheel I've ever used.
It’s clever - they’ve spotted a hole in the market and look to have made a very good job of it. I’m sure they’ll sell loads of them!
Nice to see that Fanatec finally gets some serious competition with Cammus and Moza :)
assembled by Uyghurs in China, but who care about where this comes from in the western world
@@dubtube6691Unfortunately Fanatec is also ‘Made in China’ …. Because otherwise they can’t compete with the Chinese companies who have low or no development and design costs and don’t need a ROI when selling products.
@@dubtube6691 well sadly if you're into sim racing, you're going to find it hard to find a wheel base not manufactured in china, just how the word is atm sadly
@@DiabolicalBiscuit Agreed, plus every electronic device we use to type these replies, It is the way of things right now unfortunately.
Watch out Dave you might have pissed off the fanatec fanboys 😆
I can see this being a great wheel for kids or a travel DD as it takes no room at all and so easy to transport everywhere.
ive got the the 15nm base and gt1 rim and its been great sold my fanatec csw to upgrade to cammus and haven't been disappointed
Always good to see new manufacturers bringing products to market Dave.
This seems to tick all the boxes and more as an entry level setup.
I am sure that Cammus will make a few improvements going forward with feedback from content creators such as yourself.
I think they have done well with the pricing and it should get a lot of interest.
It will be interesting to see how other manufactures react.
thats a proper cool bit of kit. love how its getting cheaper and easier for people to enjoy
I hope Cammus can keep up with the orders! I will probably get one sooner rather than later. Great review, simple and to the point. You should be their spokesman.
So many different people with different needs. This will certainly fill a hole. Great wrap up Dave 💯❤
Outrunner motors produce more torque for the size than regular inrunner motors but they do suffer from compromised cooling. Be interesting to see how this one goes.
This is awesome! I love when companies do stuff like this. I will actually look into this because my g920 is getting old. This would be perfect. I wish something similar would happen when it comes to gpu's 😂
Nice review man! Its a great setup. :)
Looks brilliant to me. Wish it had been around when I got the g920.
This wheel, loadcell pedals and I’m set I think.
Will place an order in a few weeks and use the code 👍
Better off with the new price fanatec bundle
Not if you don't buy the 8nm kit too. The 5nm CSL DD is too weak imo
@@davecamm but surely the wheel flexibility and upgrading down the line is also much greater than being stuck to this one rim
@@Kieron762 Dave knows my situation, but this wheel looks perfect to me. I’m not likely to upgrade once I have a DD.
@@Kieron762 if you care about that. I really don't want to waste money on extra rims. I don't do drifting, rally or OW anyway.
Thanks coach Dave! Great review. Ordering one right now! Coming off a G25 it wil be a massive, massive upgrade! 😁
I ordered mine on the 5th of July, its arriving Today according to UPS uk, very much looking forward to trying it out.
Really did not see this one coming. 👏 At this price point it seams to be an amazing choice for the entry to sim racing. Also when on the road a lot… hook up a laptop to your hotel room tv and racing you go!! 💪 can the pedals be transformed to being flat, like loosen a screw or something? Thx for the video, Dave! 👌 have a good week mate!
Been looking forward to this video!
Looks fantastic value!
Great for sim racers who travel! Can't take your rig but can take a DD wheel. Im in!!
this is an awesome idea and cheap as well, going to do well i reckon
Been using mine about a month now.
Bought with clamp and pedals.
I love it.
Coming from a G27 to the C5.
The software now allows the encoders to be in 12(?) inputs or to just being 2.
The 2 type C ports on the back are just a hub. I have the T-LCM (with an A to C adaptor) and the TH8s plugged into the back of the wheel.
This is perfect for my NLR Stand 2.0, as its only 1 usb cable to the PC and the power cable i have to disconnect when moving it away.
Fascinating, great review DC. I upgraded from G29 to Moza R5 in March and I was awestruck so I know how good the feeling is going to DD. I love my R5 but this thing for the price is a serious player. Possibly the end of the Logitech G series and TM 300 etc unless those two see massive price drops?
I will definitely be considering this just wait a few months to see if reliability problems crop up, as of now I dont really see that coming but i dont want to waste my time money and excitement.
This is brilliant. I will recommend this to a friend who wants to get into sim racing for a low price point. I originally said just get a Logitech. One question, I didn't catch if this is PC-only; I assume so. Thanks, Dave!
Yes PC only.
Another amazing video Dave, I've just been on to order one but got a shock with the shipping as it was over $80 plus Vat so I'm holding fire for a bit and hopefully someone in the UK will become an agent 🤞🤞
Yes I'm sure resellers will appear 👍
Full on entry level sim racing DD wheel, cool! Only issue would be the shift "nubs"? Proper sized, larger GT shift paddles are needed, in the heat of battle!
Always great info Dave! 11:11 that's what she said.
Dave, I always enjoy your content. Been doing this from the beginning of sim time lol aka old. 2010 I had the T500 and Sam Maxwell rims and at that time there wasn’t any DD. Lighter rims made the ffb come alive. 2014 I became disable so was off the racing until 2018, just lapping to get back, racing back in 2020. Running a t300 currently Simtrecs pedals, triples, 80/40 rig top pc, gpu. I only have about 40% strength in my left arm and probably 65% movement, but enough to be able to go lock to lock. So getting a DD is my last upgrade. Point is I can’t do those bigger dd wheels, I’m looking for detail. I do 💯 ir18 league races and at the end I’m pretty spent. Unfortunately there’s no showrooms to go test wheels, you just have to have blind faith. This wheel for me looks like ass lol, or maybe I should say , looks like it’s from the mother ship, aka 👽 lol. Build quality is most important too me. Simucube would be the answer but I don’t need even their lower ffb. Good job on the video 👍
Simagic mini, moza r9 ??
@@THESHADOW97139 Simagic is an option. Probably not the mini but the next step and probably tune it down, but… Like a race car they do run better at close to optimal performance. Thanks
They are getting into my price range. Will have to see what the pedals and wheel combo will cost.
I have watched a couple of reviews for this in the past few months, and I agree as an entry level wheel it looks like value for money, but a couple of reviewers said ( showed) it to be noisy ( heavy clicking sounds from the motor) now this might be down to preprodution samples, but it may not be, also it appears that there are no wheel options or interchangeablity with this, so you are stuck with that wheel, which for some will be a negative as they like to use a wheel appropriate to the car they are driving.
All that said I have to say that again you have been honest and open about this product, and given a fair review from a sim racers point of view.
When the wheel turns (by hand) when it's not turned on there is a little noise but not much. No noise at all (that I could hear) when in normal use. Yep, you're stuck with the wheel rim 👍
For the price this looks ideal for someone with a limited budget 👍🏻
Good to hear. Need to figure out what pedals to run with it. Not sold on those ones that come with it, lol.
Looks very good value
hang on a sec, I could sell my T300RS and SF1000 add-on, buy this, and be in the green? sounds like something to consider actually
This looks like the perfect wheel to use in VR, as you will not see how ugly it is :D but works quite nicely.
I couldn't remember what the C5 reminded me of until I went on some bumper cars at the weekend.
Yes 😂
If you already have a G29, and it's wheel dies, this becomes a real possible replacement. You can keep your shifters and peddles and just replace the wheel with this if you are on a budget.
The encoders being seperate buttons means you just need to bind specific black boxes to those spots not cycle black box. I prefer that since you can just quickly spin it to the specific box you want rather than cycling through.
I got one for review too, and like you I'm honestly amazed by the overall quality. I'll not say 8nm level like you... but still quite impressive for 5nm and considering the size. I also have the rev and speedo freezes, I thought it was my pc. But I play in vr so I don't care. Last thing, ont the 15nm base, the rotary are not like that, I can use them for black box
It has a peak torque of 6/7nm so without a heavy wheel you feel all of it. Unlike others where you have the wheel weight too which dulls the ffb. Great product though for the price 👍
Salut sd 😉
im thinking of getting this or a csl elite, what do you recommend?
The biggest concern I have is with getting different wheels. I might have missed them, but I don't see screws to take off the entire front panel or wheel from the main portion. If so, the costs for different ones must end up being much higher than the competition.
I have a simagic alpha mini and i want to buy one of these anyway lol. Its just so much for your money. and in VR you cant see the wheel anyway!
That would be great for a kart sim setup
The wheel with its extruding centre reminds me of the wheels on the bumper cars at the fair ground.
I'm waiting to see some long term tests and what the inside looks like (I'm not sure why nobody has pulled one apart yet, we need to see how the wheel rim is attached!), but with Cammus offering a set of 100kg load cell pedals with a clutch and brake damper for $239 USD, I'm finding hard to justify anything else to purchase at the moment.
I need compact because I don't necessarily want a profile rig (I've got a GT-Lite), and if the feedback is sufficient to be competitive, then this is all I need.
Great video, I’ve shared it to my friends who are hoping to get into the DD world
Thank you for your review. How about the wheelnoice. And the durabilty over a longer period.
Price to performance this blows away the old mechanical and belt driven wheels, It looks to be using a repurposed or similar to a electric bicycle motor rewound for lower speed and torque. So I believe you that its stronger than a CSL DD. If I had a tight budget starting out this would be a very good choice.
Cammus said the idea to use a motor like that comes from industrial robot arms. They also need something strong, compact, and accurate.
I think they have been smart with the size of the rim. this will help with delivering as much FFB to to your hands. Its very smart design and the price is excellent. Out of interest, when was the last time you used the CSL dd 8nm?
Not too long ago. Maybe a couple of months 👍
@DaveCamYT I do enjoy the CSL DD 8nm. But do know I will need to jump up a level in wheel base soonish as I know I am missing out on some detail. Cheers for the content Dave, as always it's excellent.
I just can't look at this thing without laughing. It looks like a Casio watch from when I was a kid with a ring around it.
I got mine setup yesterday and I'm loving it but how did you get the digital readout and tach lights to work? I'm guessing I have something setup incorrectly in iRacing itself.
this sounds incredible. i was just watching to watch, but it's less than 300$? I may pick it up. I only need the wheel and desk clamp
Just had a look, they have some bigger wheel bases that are also as cheap, and some load cell pedals too. Just be careful with shipping, as a full bundle of the 15nM wheel base, LC Pedals & GT rim is almost $230 in just shipping. Still, just over £800 for a full set up landed is pretty hard to argue with
I drive the 15nm big brother since more than 6 months now. I'm very happy with it. Only negative bit (on top of the shipping cost you mentioned) is the lack of wheel offer. But you can use it with any usb wheel
Hi Dave, how are you? How were you able to get the RPM and LCD to work with iRacing and the Cammus C5?
Freezing of the display was every 10 seconds. Definitely seems to be something software related.
Nice video Dave. I'm not sure if I missed but haven't heard if it can be used with different pedals? I still use an old Logitech setup which is ok for what I do, I also have a TM300 but don't like it compared to the Logitech. So yes I could be in the market for one of these at that price point.
If your pedals are usb you can use them with any wheel base. There isn't any connectivity on this base for pedals 👍
Geez. I have a pretty good set up and pedals with vr. Still have a g29 and been wanting to upgrade. Was thinking the csl but wonder if this would be better. Wonder how it will last. Good info dave thanks. Also wonder how I can get it in Canada
I endorse the word....Geez. Nice work M8.
They are a lot more expensive when you factor in the shipping price. The steering wheel plus pedals comes out to 450$ when you try to ship it to north america.
OK, I'm sold on the wheel, but not necessarily the pedals. Everything I read says you really need load cell pedals to get faster. However - then you need a more rigid rig and that gets into real money. Kind of a balancing act.
Yes, paired with some decent pedals this would be great 👍
will there be any possibility of getting this wheel and maybe the combo with the cp5 pedals in eu shops? would save quite a lot on shipping costs and so on
Interesting idea.. So It's a Hub motor, the shaft doesn't turn, the Stator turns.
But... I don't like the look of it at.
Aesthetically, this wheel kind of reminds me of a Citroen C4 steering wheel.
Great review, do we know yet if it will be console compatible? If this works with PS5 👍👍
Glad there's more and more budget dd options out there. But that new $399 deal from fanatec is still the best bang for buck option out there. 5nm DD base, V2 wheel, and CSL pedals for $399 american is hard to beat. Interested to see what answer the competitors have for the Fanatec Ready2Race bundle.
He says it feels more powerful than the 8nm fanatec.
This and a set of cheap load cells would be cheaper than fanatec, and they can’t have worse service than Fanatec.
@@raymorgan5806 TBH, this wheel could be a total piece of shit. I didn't want to say that, because it's unknown, but it could absolutely be a giant piece of garbage and fail after a month. There's no way to be sure. That's always a risk with the new guys on the scene. And while I've never had a fanatec wheel(just ordered the R2R bundle and am still waiting on it to get here) I've been using their CSL pedals with the LC brake for a year now with zero problems, and the build quality on them is great, especially for the price. And if you are just going to use the basic 2 pedal setup that comes with the Fanatec bundle, those pedals come out to be free because of how cheap the bundle is. In fact, the pedals are free, and you still save around $80 compared to buying the base and the cheapest Fanatec wheel on their own. And chances are, the Fanate is going to be better overall, regardless of how the FFB feels, because it's more than likely built better, both materially, and just in general. That said, this COULD prove to be an amazing wheel(the pedals look atrocious though to be honest), and hopefully it is. But I personally don't want to be the guy who gambles his $250 to find out. I'd rather just go with the Fanatec, which I did.
@@BurtSampson Hey there! I appreciate your perspective, but it's important to keep an open mind and avoid making assumptions before trying out a product firsthand. While it's true that the Fanatec wheel has a solid reputation and is likely to be a reliable choice, it's also worth considering that newer players in the market can surprise us with their innovations.
I understand that you have had a positive experience with Fanatec's CSL pedals, and that's great to hear! However, it's important to acknowledge that each product can have its own strengths and weaknesses. The Cammus wheel may turn out to be a fantastic option, despite your reservations about its appearance.
It's perfectly fine to have a preference and choose the product that you feel most comfortable with. But let's avoid making definitive statements about the Cammus wheel without having any personal experience with it. Give it a chance, and who knows? It might exceed your expectations. Enjoy your Fanatec wheel once it arrives, and happy racing!
Yep that's a banging deal while it lasts for sure 👍
@@Syniron yea, hopefully the camus proves to be a solid choice. The price on it is pretty sweet.
About the LCD freeze, could it be a small delay so you can look at your top and minimum speeds? Looks like it to me.
Except the speed clearly goes higher and lower than when it freezes.
I'm really interested n buying this wheel but first I need to know that it works with Automobilista 2, by far my favourite sim. Thanks.
Not sure if you'll get this, but how thick does the table clamp able to extend too? i have quite a thick desk at 75mm, biggest issue when i had a Thurstmaster is that it wouldn't fit on a desk so i needed to get a clunky stand that was hard to store and i've sold both a year or so ago as money was tight, but i'm looking into getting back into sim racing and this looks like the most attractive wheel for price-quality/performance and i just want to make sure it'll fit my desk
I'll grab the clamp and measure it for you. If I don't reply back give me a reminder 😁
Insane price. Market is getting crazy. Not sure Cammus is the name fully I trust yet... but they're at least thinking outside of the box for innovations and creating their own space.
Thinking of getting this and thrustmaster loadcell pedals to replace my g920. Just gotta build a wood rig first and figure out where to put it 😂
The thrustmaster T-LCM pedals are not worth the money, better quality pedals are available for the price. It may be a good choice only if you need to stay in Thrustmaster ecosystem because of console compatibility. I at first considered them but a friend of mine talked me out of it. You can get the CSL pedals with a LC brake for similar price, though the brake is stiff as a wall. I checked out the new CSL Elite V2 pedals from fanatec, all the reviews raved about the brake on it, so I got it for 300e. Best spent 300e IMO. Even a fellow racer on LFM said that him and his son tried both of them and the Elite V2s are a big step up (if you swap throttle and clutch positions, I would say. Clutch has stiffer spring and feels better as throttle)
@@Django45 good to know! Thanks so much for the info. I'll have to do more research on some of your suggestions!
I like to see how long does it last. I still have my Logitech force feedback for my PS3 that works! 😳
I am very interested in this Dave, I spotted it a few weeks ago. This is a nice upgrade from my G29 do you think? Also I have one of those deck-chair rigs, would the strength be a possible issue, ie will it bend the chair from torque?
I had it on my desk and it was perfectly fine 😁
I'm going to test it on a more portable rig soon 👍
The good thing with DD is you can run it at low torque that's similar to belt/gear-driven wheels, and it will still be much better because it's much more accurate in small details.
Hi dave. You forgot that we in Holland have to pay taxex and € 120 to send it to us. Then Fanatec with its eco system is parhaps a better option
Hopefully shipping etc will be cheaper with resellers 👍
I love companies that send products to test with no attachments good on them. You could stick on the bmw patel extensions
As i understand, it's avalaibe only for PC ( compatible) , right?
Keep talking like that Dave and I’m going to order a cammus wheel I swear
Dave, what earbuds are you using?
Are there paddle shifters on the wheel? If not, I would assume it is a nonstarter for most people.
Yes indeed there are 👍
I have a Fanatec CSL Elite. Do you know if I can use my Pedals with the CAMMUS C5 Base?
If your Fanatec pedals are just your usual usb you can use any pedals 👍
Does it feel hot after few hours of usage?
"How they can do it for that money" well let me tell you every manufacturer can, this guy's just chose to do it.
Exactly. Fanatec just dropped the price of their CSL DD to $199 USD when bundled with any pedal and wheel rim, but that's still not cheap enough to compete with this.
And when Dave says this is better than a CSL DD 8Nm wheelbase in terms of feedback and "feel", I'm convinced Fanatec can sell it for even less.
All these manufacturers know sim racing is an expensive hobby and take full advantage of it, but if Cammus can bring in people otherwise unable to afford it, they've tapped an entire new market with potentially tens of thousands more customers. Maybe even hundreds of thousands of customers.
Same with logitech, instead of upgrading their g920, g923, g29 wheels within the same price range, they went straight for the expensive direct drive market cuz they realized how much companies are making from it and decided to price theirs so much higher.
great price. $114 US for shipping seems pretty outrageous.
Yes I've spoken to Cammus about the shipping. It's all to do with international resellers which they are currently working on. Hopefully soon they'll get that sorted and shipping should be much cheaper 👍
@@davecamm trying to cancel my order atm. watched several reviews and was impressed. You cant see the shipping cost until AFTER you purchase which is what outraged me. I always factor shipping and the way its hidden is just bad buisiness practice IMO.
@@joeallen4454 yes, I mentioned it as soon as I found out. It'll be a big turn off for lots 🫤
cool!
Will it be substantially better than a G29? I'm pretty close to getting a DD wheel
Oh yes, might and day difference 👍
... so are there any sellers in UK or is this an import to UK ?
do you think you can swap the left and right bracket? I ask because they are above center, it they where below center you con drop your screens really low but right up against the wheel. This is going to give more dashbord view without having to move the screens far away and loosing fov!
They are threaded both ends so don't see why not
Looks good and any DD wheel coming in at a reasonable price is a good thing. I upgraded from a G25 to a Moza R5 and it was a massive improvement.
What about vat import duty how does that work with cammus
You would assign individual black boxes to the rotary ie. Relative, fuel, etc. How can they do it for this money? Well how long are they going to last
Yes you could do that, just not the next/previous which I'm used to I guess.
Regarding longevity, time will tell I suppose but I can't see why it would fail any more frequently than any other wheelbase 👍
There's a video of a DIY DD wheel made from a hoverboard wheel on YT...........I thought that was genius, but this is essentially the same thing, but obviously built to a better standard.
Does it get hot?
No, not really. It's warm, but I wouldn't say hot 👍
@DaveCamYT reason I ask is because my kids have hoverboards, and the metal part of the wheels get very hot.
I have one with dead batteries and was gonna have a go at the DIY DD
Hi Dave, I've just found your excellent review and just wondered if you still hold the same view 5 months on?
I'm thinking of placing an order (using ur affiliate code, of course) as they are doing a xmas discount.
I can get a C5 wheel and desk clamp delivered to the UK for £226.33 or $284.00!
Sounds bonkers. Cheaper than a T248 or G29.
What say you?
Yep, still feel the same. If shipping has come down even better 👍
Thanks, It has. About £44.50. Still a lot for a parcel. Maybe that's why the wheel is so cheap.
The “look” category probably better word is ergonomic.
Looks and ergonomics are completely different 👍
I was just going to buy a bundle, but stopped at the $147 to ship to the uk, no vat or duties included. Seems like it becomes a pointless option when compared against the recently reduced Fanatec CSL DD doesn’t it? Maybe I am missing something.
Yes it's way to expensive shipping wise. We need resellers 👍
This wheel itself may not be it, but I can easily see this type of design becoming the norm. Cheaper to make, and you get more feedback for less power!
Just one question, why don't you use IRFFB Dave? Otherwise good to see the prices dropping so more can get involved
I'm not a fan at all. Feels super fake when the car loses traction at the rear imo
@@davecamm Ah fair enough, I thought it just added more definition to the standard iracing force feedback (from 60 whatsits to 360 whatsits). Enjoy your content Dave.
I just cant get over the look. It's like someone put some buttons on a pie dish or something
Just noted that they have resellers in Europe so my comment will not be relevant once those get this wheel in stock.
That's all good until you realize that they ship from China. The shipment cost to Sweden is $83 and then we got the VAT of $102 so i total the wheel and desk mount comes in at $537 WITH the discount. That's still pretty cheap for a DD wheel but not nearly the bargain it seems to be at a first glance. If I opted for the whole set with pedals and desk mount I would pay $567 in total and that's about the same as a Moza R5 or Fanatec Ready2Race bundle.
Just started sim racing and I'm still using a controller, it's it worth looking past the Logitech entry range to something like this.
Yes it's much better than any belt/cog driven wheel out there. There will always be resale potential too if you wanted to upgrade down the line 👍
@@davecamm Cheers Dave.
The 15nm FFW for 659 isn’t too bad. I have my rig built and I’m not even going to mess around with Logitech and etc. but I don’t want to spend 1k for a wheel/base. This is def a better option than belt driven for essentially the same money. But i think I’d rather pick up something a little better and buy one e cry once. Just don’t know which wheel to go with in the 700$ price range. Suggestions?
5nm not 15
@Victor Barbosa he's taking about the 15nm big brother in cammus product line
@@SerialDriver correct. But I’ve seen some others like simcube in same range that I’ve heard good things about. Just looking for some feedback since I have virtually no exposure to them.
@@colossalbigfoot256I currently have the Cammus 15Nm and pedals as well as logitech G pro 11Nm bundle. Ive had the CSL DD 8Nm and v3 pedals at the same time I had the Cammus. The csl dd 8Nm and v3 felt like a toy compared to cammus. The cammus 15Nm is more realistic feeling to driving a real car. I has better holding torque than csl dd. Better quick release (standard universal 70mm) . the cammus is also better than the logi G pro in terms of realistic steering feel. The only advantage of the logi G pro is trueforce. I sold my fanatec gear and kept the cammus and logi G pro.
And whats the pedals?
