    Peter, I am always impressed by your videos and the teachings you provide. The only little improvement I want to say is to your camera person, if he or she could zoom in more specially when you are emphasizing something. As a viewer, I definitely can say that I would learn even more if I could see a closer look of your work. Thank you

      @@laurasherrill2463 I hope Peter sees your question, but I will say I had a teacher who reused the potting soil, especially for pre-bonsai trees or yamadori trees being potted for the first time. Some people might be concerned about disease organisms or pests in the old soil, but I agree with Peter's opinion about not needing to sterilize used pots to repot trees. Just my experience! If a problem arises, you just deal with it.

It gets pretty windy on my southwest facing balcony, and have had a whole bunch of my trees blown over because I cut the wires holding them in their pots. I agree Peter. Far to many people, especially on the internet, are using products like Akadama, Lave rock and pummace and don't really understand why. Having never taken the time to experiment with more common components. Many have only been doing pre-Bonsais for a few years and in all honesty will never have trees anywhere near show quality.

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 5 дней назад +1

      I dont know what bims is ? We use. 1:1:1 of Akadama/Organic /Lava for deciduous trees - For conifers we increase the Akadama and Lava, but you can judge for yourself. We dont use 100% Akadama for anything.

    • @janzacharias3482
      @janzacharias3482 5 дней назад

      Bims would be pumice
      Why would you use more akadama with conifers? Usually 1 part akadama 1 part pumice 1 part lava is the recommendation for conifers because they prefer more air while deciduous trees need more water. So akadama holds water and nutrients and you would therefore need more akadama with broadleaf trees. Do you use it that way because of the local climate?

    • @kevinorr6880

      @
      Peter, I know you were bought up in India and you were married to a English woman and that you were a cyclist and I think you were a engineer at one time but got interested in Bonsai. But I did not know it was three generations in India!
      So how did great grandpa end up in India? I find people family history fascinating. Where you bought up with the British still control of India or did India got their independent as you were growing up?
      I have a Chinese friend who parents came from Johannesburg, South Africa. Interesting his great, grandfather saw a sign on a sailing ship said “Deck hand needed going to “Golden Mountain.” He thought “Golden Mountain” was San Francisco, the 1849 gold rush. But it was for South Africa gold rush. 😱 It took their family two generations for them to come to San Francisco.
      By the time they got here gold was gone and his father ended up as a cook in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.
      Did your parents taught you some of the Chinese traditional culture or was your family totally adapted to the Indian culture?
      Fascinating background. I am right now writing our family history and their experience in China and how they met here, before I forget the family history.
      I never married so after mom passed away about three years ago I had more time to write and give my perspective between the two cultures. Although I was born in America I still cling to some of the traditional culture. I take what is best to the two worlds.
      Hence, am big on Chinese New Year and Chinese history and customs, and food. I can hold a conversation and can cook Chinese dishes. But most of my cousin and young relatives have lost their connection with the culture. Just like my younger brother he can’t speak Chinese but knows how to order his favorite dish at a Chinese restaurant I consider that great. That least he wouldn’t go hungry. 🤣
      Anyway you take care and have a blessed week. 🙏🙏🙏
