Gstaad is a village in the Swiss municipality of Saanen (in French: Gessenay), located in the canton of Bern. It is a ski resort and a holiday resort frequented by the international elite of wealth and birth (the "jet set"), even by renowned artists (for example: Roman Polanski in 2010).
The village is located on the borders of the former county of Gruyère, dependent on the House of Savoy, in the administrative district of Haut-Simmental-Gessenay.
From the 19th century, the village became a place of tourism.
In 1947, Richard Nikolaus de Coudenhove-Kalergi founded the European Parliamentary Union in Gstaad. With 3,200 inhabitants, Gstaad represents a large fraction of the population of Saanen, which has almost 7,000.Gstaad has several “5-star” hotels: Alpina Gstaad, Gstaad Palace, Grand Hotel Park, Grand Bellevue, Ultima Gstaad Hotel, Spa & Residences.
There are many haute-couture or high-end jewelry boutiques there, and several international banks have a representation there.Several chalets serving as second homes for wealthy families were designed by renowned architects.
