Looks pretty much perfect, especially with no load times. It was funny when Shao Kahn said "Sub-Zero shows Mercy" & Dan Forden's "Frosty" was said over Mercy. Perfect timing
Back in the school days, we always argued about the Mk and Street Fighter games being better on the SNES or the Genesis. Then the one rich kid would come up and tell us his daddy's $2000 PC was the best for all these games. Needless to say, we asked him to prove it and one day, he actually did. Deep down he was right, but we still argued relentlessly for our consoles.
He was so right in fact that a couple years later, when age of empires 2 and war raft started rolling out, we were all begging our parents for PC's because we needed them for "school work".
I remember the school yard arguments for these games. Truth is when I was that age I loved Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat equally. Over the years I played both franchises all the time, but when MK11 came out for some reason I started to veer back to the old school MK’s, I found the new ones were getting to complicated for me. And here we are today lol thanks for the comment! 👊🏼
@@BushyStallionSame here. Grew up with MK2 and SSF2 on SNES. MK9 was my last "modern" game. Where I live it's really hard to source actual hardware and games. Your work in the last year has made me extremely invested in experiencing the weird and wonderful differences in all the various ports (stage design, sprite designs, strategy, music, sfx, everything). Thank you for doing this. Much admiration and respect, from Trinidad.
Interesting vid and this port was kind of neat to see in action. A fun fact about this port is that Oren Peli, the creator of the Paranormal Activity series, actually was the co-programmer of it and that's pretty amusing to know. XD
Excellent version with really good sound. My Christmas savings went to buy this. I remember i played the demo which had only jax and Sheeva as playable characters and was hyped as fuck
1995 or should I say from October to December 1995 was quite the pinnacle of video games here. It was an exciting transitional time from 16 bit to the emerging 32 bit gaming, we'll never experience that notion again. PC wise MK3 and Hexen were pretty big games to end the year here.
My bro and I would let the game load up and then swap out the CD with whatever we felt like listening to, always fun to see what stage was gonna play which track!
Im just happy to finally have the actual arcade roms that i spent countless quarters on back in the day.. i played the snes version of 1... 2... 3... umk3... and then mk4 on n64 for more hours than i can count and being able to revisit these games in there original state is priceless...
Great video as usual :) so much nostalgia. I still have all the MK for dos. I always loved them, no loading, so close to arcade perfection. And to be the technical guy who is nit-picking the settings in the GOG version are wrong. The aspect ratio look like 16:10, it should be 4:3 (dos game use non-square pixel or tall-pixel). There is some frame skipping (drop frame here and there) The cycles use in this dosbox are not optimal. For a better experience, use dosbox pure or even better pcem (and real hardware off course on a crt monitor). Thank you for your videos it is such a blast Thank Good Old Game for the preservation of all those games.
This is a pretty solid port of MK3. For the stages, I believe they are all there. Mk3 had a weird glitch where it would reset the stage order deepening on if you uppercut someone in the soul chamber. If you play on the Street stage, then the next battle you fight in the Soul Chamber and then uppercut to the balcony, the next fight will fight in the street again lol. As long as you don't uppercut to the next level in the Soul Chamber, you'll get the full cycle of stages for your game.
Reason for that was cause the game came to the Balcony first and then the Bridge and then the Soul Chamber. Remaining on the Soul Chamber will continue the stage cycle onward but if you uppercut then the game will think you're still at the Balcony and will cycle you back to the Bridge and back to the Soul Chamber. This cycle also happen in Ultimate MK3 too and because of this the Balcony stage was completely remove from the Super NES and Sega Genesis versions of Ultimate MK3. It was both a clever but dumb move too, clever cause they finally fix the glitch but dumb cause now you fight Motaro somewhere else which makes it not arcade accurate.
Absolute hit. Best (well, truest to the arcade) gameplay and audio of the home ports. Graphics were really good too, especially for graphical capabilities of PC games at the time. My only gripe was with the power bars and the rest of the heads-up display, instead of graphics for each life bar name it used text. Not really sure why they decided to go that route unless they were just trying to save space somewhere. But besides that, the game is awesome. The windows 95 specific version is just another clone of PlayStation, just with no load times. I'm glad we got the DOS version with round announcements and some other items the other disc-based games didn't get
4:12 The borders are there because the PC versions of all the MK games actually display at the correct aspect ratio (the arcade versions did not), which is a bit wider than the standard at the time...and for this to display correctly on a 4:3 monitor, it has to include the black bars. It's the same as watching a widescreen movie on an old school CRT television...it has black bars on the top and bottom because it has to, in order to show the entire picture as intended. This was actually pretty standard for Midway games at the time. The NBA Jam games are the same way.
I can’t believe you just compared this to the SNES version 😂 This is on a different planet in terms of quality than the SNES. You have to understand that this game was made for cpu monitors not the televisions of today.
Indeed, the saturated colors and the somehow blurry looking sprites look similar to the SNES port (also their size is rather 16bit), but the resolution is definitely higher, and most backgrounds have an additional scroll layer. The sound is quite close to the arcade.
I had this version as a kid and I loved it. I only had one major beef with it. The way to unlock smoke was completely different that any other version (you had to enter something different in the DOS prompt when starting the game) and I couldn’t find a single source of info on this. So i spent my childhood never being able to play as smoke.
The PC version was not based on the super Nintendo version. The PC version was the basis for the PSX and Saturn versions. The sprites are bigger than the snes version, more frames of animation, etc..
Graphically the sprites and arenas still look better than the SNES. Two things to note is the lower resolution than the arcade and PS1 and this game uses only 256 colors. The GOG DOSBox settings might not be optimal, considering the speed and framedrop issues.
I hear that, I never changed any of the settings on this but I noticed that you can go into text in this and change some things around, I had to do that in order to map my controls to a controller after all. I wonder what the optimal settings would be for this version. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
@BushyStallion sometimes i can't figure out good dosbox settings myself. It's like every game demands specific changes. Sometimes I think it would be easier to just get an old PC XD
Displaying the game on a tv will make it look a bit pixelated so I wouldn't fault the game on that. Its running at a much lower resolution than 4K and its being blown up to full screen on a 4K display.
I would love to see you play MK trilogy for the ps1 as the boss characters. You could play a few fights as each boss. I know you said the boss characters weren’t that fun to play as, but I think it could make for a good video
I had this version it was way better than the snes version. One thing that always bugged me was the fighters position during a match in soul chamber was always way to the right instead of center on that stage so the chamber is way to the left beginning each match
I believe the reason there is a Sound ON, CD Off it's because if you did not have a CD drive in your PC, you had to install the game via Floppy Disks. Then your PC would play the music via your sound card. I certainly remember the PC version having different music if you did not have the CD.
I remember seeing this on a friend's pc back in the day. It was so cool 😎 I wanted to play ▶️ it but it was too mature for my age. Later on I got MK2 on game gear 🎮🤘🏻
@@bradallen8909 I actually have the original MS-DOS CD-ROM playing on original Pentium hardware in DOS natively. The frame rate is capped at around 30. Arcade runs at 60.
Hey again Darryl. Just thought you might be interested to know that according to the patch notes for the latest version of Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition for the Sega Genesis, version 1.0c, the third-party controller incompatibility issue has been fixed so controllers like that Hyperkin six-button should work now.
1. You should have played as Shang Tsung - given his character was usually the one that gave the most problems to the CD- based versions of the games (due to load times between character morphs), seeing if these were consistent on the PC version would have answered many questions. 2. CD audio might have been something to turn off to make it playable on slower systems of that time, as well as systems without an optical drive. (It mighht have been for people like me who prefered something like Metallica or NIN with the game noises instead!) Do you remember what type of monitors we had back when this game came out? There wouldn't have been a need for scanlines as most consumer-grade moniters were still CRT-based. (If you ever wanted to feel spoiled by gaming now: here you go!)
The Windows version is difficult to come by I believe. It's a port of the PS1 version, and this one It's completely different since it was ported by another studio (if memory serves me) and of course, just for DOS (the one GOG has).
This was the first Mortal Kombat I played on PC. My cousin bought it and his PC could BARELY run it, so sound had to be turned off to get decent frame rate LOL. But I eventually upgraded PCs and he just passed the game onto me since he was better off just buying a used copy for SNES
2:44 why do they have the "novice", "Master" etc ladders when you already chose the difficulty in the options menu? Is the ladder selection just for those who want more or less fights?
I love this game, got it for Christmas when it came out, and played the hell out of it, with all characters. CD version. The keyboard is great for combos. "666" code to unlock Smoke on the DOS prompt is epic.
The borders is because the graphics mode was 320x200 and it would be stretched into place on a CRT If you configure dosbox correctly you won't have any borders Back in the day it was smootg as butter ao again updating the dosbox settings will remove any stuttering you're seeing
9:35 this is why I absolutely hated the uppercuts that would bring you up to the next room. You'd end up repeating the same stages over and over again. Even if you avoid using the uppercuts it's not like AI would.
It's cycling through those stages because Nightwolf uppercutted you on the Soul stage into Motaro s stage. It always goes to the bridge stage then the Souls stage again.
Funny memory of this for me. I downloaded the demo of this when it came out and it crashed my psckard bell computer. It crashed because i only had 8 megabytes of ram and i needed 16 megabytes of Ram lol.
the choppiness i believe may be because the refresh rate isnt set correctly. Sometimes old DOS/W95 PC games have little tweaks that need to be made to make run perfect on modern systems.
I have the original boxed CD Version MK3 for DOS still in my basement 😅 but I will put it soon with mk4 to e bay I guess But it was a good playable version at all…
Those credits feel like such a slap in the face to the ppl who worked on the game. You spend months putting this project together and in the end you only get those 5 seconds of recognition while your tiny name scrolls across the screen but then some yahoo(s) decide to add some dumb, goofy effect making everyone's names unreadable for more than half of those 5 seconds so now your name is only visible for 2 or 3 seconds.
This most definitely more resembles SNES version which is shocking considering PC's even back then were a bit more advanced than SNES and more on par with PS1. That little detail is quite shocking. Yes, it sounds great and just like Arcade which is great but why are the graphics downgraded?!? This should look exactly like the Arcade. Ive never seen much of, or played the pc version but i expect it probably has a native res of around 640x480
SNES version has a pattern of destroying the player every other match. Computer wins, then plays so weak it essentially gives you the win. I still play it often cuz I'm a sucker for punishment.
I just played this on Windows 10 a few days ago without any special settings. My Windows only version has a concrete block with different options by spinning the block. Don’t think networking was an option on my version? The Windows installer did not even load but the .exe ran right off the CD fine. If I make an iso it would probably play pretty smooth.
It was a good version but not so great in practice. A clunky keyboard and a tiny computer monitor would make for a less enjoyable experience than any console.
This looks like a pretty stout version! Yeah, I own the only copy I have of UMK3 on the SNES AND ITS MADE BEAUTIFULLY! BUT! The gameplay is so damn hard! I'm doing exploit city the whole playthrough lmao. I Can see how it it looks like the SNES. Not having music kind of sucks at the story of the fighter at the end but for 3 bucks heh what the hell! I've got to get my hand's on the MS-DOS VERSIONS! Have you cleaned your SNES yet Lmao!? I'm just going to keep asking hahaha! Nah just joking around. Just think it'd be cool to see it all clean! Whichever one wasnt the PS1 port is the best by far (Dos?)
Mortal Kombat project is like that because it uses Windows 95 MK3 (no MSDOS) as a base
It was a good version but not so great in practice. A clunky keyboard and a tiny computer monitor would make for a less enjoyable experience than any console.
Do you use the spacebar to block?
Classic I was all over this game
I just hated playing on PLAYSTATION everytime Shang Tsung morphed it would freeze for a second it was irritating playing at times
Nothing was good on the Genesis. It's sound was terrible on every game
You’re an idiot.
the ms dos version of mortal kombat 2 was good 😅
This looks like a pretty stout version!
HMS YO!

I like that you upload and play these but you’ve gotten tons wrong as far as comparison goes.. this looks nothing at all like super nes it looks miles better but also nowhere near the arcade.. I thought you were and mk fan this clearly looks far above snes bro but nowhere near the arcade either
