49 states have some form. North Dakota being the exception. California is you CAN drive in the left lane as a lane, provided you're driving "to the speed limit". Aka it's 65 - you DO 65 (at least). Arizona is pass only...
On every driving test I've seen it always says that lane is for faster traffic only...and 99%of the time in every chase/high speed response from an officer video their camera is on and could very easily send the person who owns the vehicle a ticket...
Unfortunately Ohio does not have that rule, here it is just considered a lane and it is respectful to move out of that lane for law enforcement but a lot of people don’t do they have to cut through cars. Ohio needs to implement it though
Arkansas has the same motor vehicle law. Lane 1 is for passing only. There are even signs every so often stating this, which sadly many drivers choose to ignore or likely never bothered to read the sign! It is also one of the questions on the license test!
So does California and it doesn't matter how light traffic is, we still have One Lane Brains (as my truck driving father called them). Last driver had no excuse, just typical unfortunately.

Common sense rules for the left lane: 1. You should be in the right lane for normal driving. 2. You should move to the left lane to pass. 3. You can stay in the left lane as long as one of the following is true: 1) You are actively passing another vehicle to your right. 2) You are keeping up with another vehicle in the left lane that is in front of you, or 3) There is an upcoming left-hand exit or turn that you must take. 4. If none of those things in rule #3 are true, you need to move to the right lane. 5. These rules do not apply on surface streets, including divided streets like boulevards, low-speed streets, or streets with frequent traffic lights. In general, it applies to multi-lane, divided, controlled access highways and most non-controlled-access highways where the speed limit is highway speed. Different states may have laws that word this a bit different, and may have some specifics to their state. But if you follow these common sense rules, no one will be upset with you regardless of state.
@userac-xpg No, you need that rule to cover freeways in large city urban areas. In congested traffic, the left lane will still be used and will be trafficked as well. You may not be actively passing because some lanes may move intermittently stop-and-go. But this would be permitted as long as you're keeping up with the car in front of you. Similarly, on the open highway, if you are attempting an active pass, but there is another car in the left lane that is not obeying these rules, there is no obligation for you to move back to the right lane and wait for him to clear the left lane. You can follow him in the left lane until he clears.
I live in NC, and had the pleasure of meeting Mark Lamb a few years during a Republican meeting. What a great guy. I have no doubt Sheriff Teeple will be just as good a Sheriff.
I appreciate that you guys are enforcing this, here our sheriffs office are too busy responding to actual calls to even attempt to run traffic patrols, and our highway patrol is too busy responding to crashes because people don’t know how to drive correctly to enforce anything… the problem just gets worse and worse in southwest Montana because we’re stuck in this loop, bad drivers get worse because there’s no enforcement than they crash which make even less enforcement and so on and so forth
LoL that’s been my saying since I was a Deputy. Always love working for an agency that allows their Deputies to have discretion on traffic stops. It one of many reasons I decided to run, so my Deputies would continue to. Thanks for the kind words.
For anyone that drives up and down interstate 5 , from Los Angeles to San Francisco, same rules apply. I see a lot of “campers” on interstate 5 driving slower than the 18 wheeler on the right and refuse to move over. CHP has light up signs that read “ slow traffic keep right “ but drivers ignore it.
In Texas state law says that you can drive in the left lane but if someone signals you that they want to pass you are required to move right as soon as it is safe, you can't accelerate until the person has passed, and then you can move left again. I hate left lane campers, they really clog up traffic. They don't write nearly enough tickets for that violation. In California they write those tickets, I had a CHP officer tell me that when he stops someone they will say "I'm driving the speed limit so they shouldn't need to pass" and he tells them that if the state wanted them to control traffic they would give them a car with a white driver's door.
My problem with the left lane-passing only rule is two things. Often, when you start to pass a slower car in the right lane, they speed up to the point where you have to exceed the speed limit by more than 4 or 5 miles per hour to pass them. This gives me the choice of speeding up to an unsafe/illegal speed, or slowing down to where the people behind me get upset with me as I am trying to merge back to the right lane since the person I am trying to pass refuses to just let me pass them. Quite often, this happens when there is a police car in the mix, which makes me ultra-careful about watching my speed. The second issue with this law is in heavy traffic during commuting hours, where the left lane is moving say 65 mph in a 60 zone, and the next lane is trucks and slower drivers going 55 mph. There is always an impatient driver who forces people into making risky lane change into the slower lane, then immediately gets right on the rear bumper of the next car in front, repeated over and over. It seems to me that in such heavy traffic, that the passing only rule does not work well at all, and merely forces the careful, safe driver to take chances getting out of the way of tailgaters who aren't satisfied with the the pace of traffic. I am a careful driver who tries really hard to avoid aggravating other drivers or blocking faster people, but this law can easily result in people like me being unable to safely obey this rule. I have a very clean driving record, and used to be a driving instructor, but it is getting very difficult to maintain this status with all of the aggressive drivers I encounter in today's traffic. BILL In Washington.
Their [lack of] logic goes: "IF it is only for passing, and IF I'm going the speed limit, then it would be illegal to pass me!".... not realizing just BEING in the lane when not actively passing makes THEM equal to any speeders they think they're better than.
I live in Texas. I like to get in the left lane for 20+ miles. It gets them so animated. It's just a little game I like to play. Once they pass they show me I'm number one though. Of coarse if you're gonna drive 3x the speed limit, expect people to be constantly in your way.
Sheriff Lamb is the elected Sheriff, he’s not a Sgt, he ran for the Senate but lost the primary to Kari Lake, i believe he’s going to move onto something in the private sector but not sure what, either way I wish him well on his next adventure
Awesome job, lots of people don't realize it but pretty much almost ALL the US States have this law but some do not enforce it often but it is law. We even have that law here in Kansas.
I learn so much watching these videos, I am from the UK so most things don’t impact me but still these videos could be a good resource for someone visiting and intending to drive in the US.
Good luck Sheriff Lamb in your new pursuits. You WILL be missed and you’ll be a valuable asset wherever you go. I knew about not driving in the left lane prior to the 90’s and, believe it or not, California has the same law but it’s not enforced. Heck, they have a hard enough time enforcing the carpool lane laws. I certainly hope Frank continues his RUclips channel. Y’all take care now and be safe.
I-80 in Wyoming eighteen wheelers climbing grades side by side sometimes for ten miles going as slow as 45 m.p.h.. Busiest interstate in the country and there's a traffic pile up behind them for a mile waiting for the truck in the left lane to move over. Probably on their CB's talking about how cute they are.
A lot of company trucks have governors on them, which limits the top speed. (Which also ruins momentum on the downhill.) A lot of trucks simply don't have the power to run full speed uphill and so the truckers try to out run each other on the hills going 45 or whatever they're doing. In the industry, it's called the five mile race because you're literally driving about that long to pass another truck. The problem is that neither driver wants to give up and lose their momentum, so that is the result. Back in the day, I drove a truck that I would go 10-15 mph over the limit on the downhill and despite the speed, I would end up doing 10 mph under the speed limit on the ensuing uphill, simply because the truck just didn't have the power with the load.
@@danr4316 I understand what you are saying. I drove Greyhound buses across Wyoming for many years. Most of the truckers (and bus drivers) get it that you don't begin passing another truck at the base of a long steep grade. Buses didn't climb grades like cars but they also didn't climb like an 80,000 pound fully loaded truck. When I had trucks try to pass me on long grades, I would just slow down and let them get around me.
I saw somebody in the hog lane going 20 miles an hour yesterday and just before it happend a state trooper had passed us and so he got pulled over it was to satisfying.
I recently drove through I-10 in Arizona on my way to Texas from LA and back, and this is the first thing I kept in mind while driving in your state. Most people in California hog the left lane on rural highways, and this concept of driving is much more organized and more effective getting ahead without having to make unsafe maneuvers. I applaud the Pinal County Sheriff for enforcing the law.
I drove the left lane on Interstate 8 when entering Arizona from Cali because of all the rough pavement in the right lane but moved over when cars rolled up on me. You have some really smooth highways and some really good drivers.
The end of an era and the start of a new one. And both of these guys prefer to give warnings over tickets. Well Sherriff Lamb, it would be great to see you here in TX. All the best to both of you and of course Deputy Frank!

Can't like this hard enough. Come to Maricopa County PLEASE.
Well done Sheriffs! There is nothing more annoying than camping in the number one lane!
Their [lack of] logic goes: "IF it is only for passing, and IF I'm going the speed limit, then it would be illegal to pass me!".... not realizing just BEING in the lane when not actively passing makes THEM equal to any speeders they think they're better than.
I am in Arizona and I did not know this. This is so good to know!
PREACH IT sir!!!!! It ain't your personal KOA!!!!!!
Thanks for making the roads safe
wht is wrong with the drivers tht dont carry dr license w them should be hundred doll fine
i am glad the new sherriff has the right idea!
Welcome aboard Sheriff Teeple!
I live in Texas. I like to get in the left lane for 20+ miles. It gets them so animated. It's just a little game I like to play. Once they pass they show me I'm number one though. Of coarse if you're gonna drive 3x the speed limit, expect people to be constantly in your way.
Gonna miss your left-lane camping campaign Sgt Lamb. I hope you will continue to have a role in law enforcement in Arizona for years to come.
Sheriff Lamb is the elected Sheriff, he’s not a Sgt, he ran for the Senate but lost the primary to Kari Lake, i believe he’s going to move onto something in the private sector but not sure what, either way I wish him well on his next adventure
I Love Pinal County. I now reside in Apache County. But miss the Pinal County Sheriff's Department!
We need you guys in California 😅
How bout it? 2 great sheriff's! God speed to both of them!
I saw somebody in the hog lane going 20 miles an hour yesterday and just before it happend a state trooper had passed us and so he got pulled over it was to satisfying.
Thanks for getting the word out. It's one of my pet peeves and there is a lot of people that don't know or either care.
Great info, mercial .Thanks for sharing! 😊
Sheriff Teeple is gonna be just fine. Hey, Teeple - wear your body armor - not everyone is as nice as you. Stay safe out there.
Awe, thank you for the kind words and for the record I was wearing body armor under my outer shirt.
Not going to lie, here in North Carolina we just call that fast lane. If the speed limit is 65, you better be doing 75 in that fast lane.
California, too. It’s never fast enough, though
We need more left lane camping stops! Great work, keep it up
Thank you Sheriff Lamb for passing along this law!!
I can't stand it!
I see it every day.
This causes accidents, bc ppl are on their phone...or never look in their Rear view mirror 🤦♀️
I drove the left lane on Interstate 8 when entering Arizona from Cali because of all the rough pavement in the right lane but moved over when cars rolled up on me. You have some really smooth highways and some really good drivers.
Best episode to date. This is the biggest problem with traffic flow
Blessings to Sheriff Lamb on his new adventures.
You will be missed.
Welcome to the new Sheriff,
Sending prayers for your safety from East TN.🙏🏼
On I40 east of flagstaff most drivers stay in left due to the right lane is full of potholes. Some areas are worse then others...
The end of an era and the start of a new one. And both of these guys prefer to give warnings over tickets. Well Sherriff Lamb, it would be great to see you here in TX. All the best to both of you and of course Deputy Frank!
Driving in the left lane in California is a common practice and the CHP never enforced this criminal act.
Not since they were defunded
Great job gentlemen and congratulations. Newly deputy Ross sheriff have a safe and happy holidays and a great new year.
This is what cops SHOULD be doing. Making the lives of people easier and reduce road rage. Not pulling people over for plate covers, tints, or going only 5 over the limit.
We need you guys in WV, OH,VA, and Kentucky. Love you guys.
I'm favoured financially with Bitcoin ETFs approval, Thank you buddy.$28,600 weekly profit regardless of how bad it gets on the economy.
Same here., I strongly agree that the Bitcoin ETFs approval will be greatly life opportunity for us, with my current portfolio of $102,500 from my investments with my personal financial advisor Steve Miley I totally agree with you😊
YES!!! That's exactly his name (Steve Miley) so many people have recommended highly about him and am just starting with him from Brisbane Australia...🇦🇺
He's my family's personal Broker and also a personal Broker to many family's in the United states, he is licensed and a FINRA AGENT in the United States.
The very first time we tried, we invested $1000 and after a week, we received 4500. That really helped us a lot to pay up our bills.
This sounds so good and i would like to be a party to this, is there any way i can speak with him?
As a Californian i completely agree with this. I move over after passing 90% of the time
