    i think the burette should be filled with hydrochloric acid and not sodium hydroxide because i had recently done a titration of standardization of sodium hydroxide using hydrocholric acid

    • @fearghaldevenney3117
      @fearghaldevenney3117 7 лет назад +1

      we done it the same way

    • @mohammadabbas3643
      @mohammadabbas3643 7 лет назад

      Mohamed Amiin NaOH is a strong base so you have to fill it in the burette.

    • @easystylescience293
      @easystylescience293  7 лет назад +16

      It does not matter which you put into the burette. Either hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide is acceptable, all that changes is the end point. If it is hydrochloric acid in the conical flask, the end point will be a pink colour. If sodium hydroxide is in the conical the end point will be clear. Either way you will still be able to calculate the concentration of either solution.
      Sodium hydroxide can block the burette so this is why we have done it this way :)

    • @keshikathapa3771
      @keshikathapa3771 6 лет назад +1

      If we fill Naoh on burette it will get deposited at the end and might get error

    I wonder whether or not HCl and NaOH in the video can go into the sink directly as those chemicals shall have to be put into a waste container. Also, it might not be safe to use such types of gloves for this experiment. Normally, in the lab, we have to use MAPA ultranitrile gloves (the green ones) for handling strong acid and base.

    • @easystylescience293
      @easystylescience293  3 года назад

      The HCl and NaOH was at a concentration of 0.1m for both and is safe to into a sink as they can be rinsed using normal water. Always check your own risk assessment and local environmental policy before disposing of chemicals.
      The gloves in this case are Vinyl and can be used for this practical as long as the person using them is not allergic to vinyl. Nitrile gloves is always preferred

    Can methyl orange be used as the indicator sir?

  • @مالالله-ح4ظ
    @مالالله-ح4ظ 5 лет назад +1

    We can repeat the experiment by using HCl as standard solutions not NaoH???

  • @hard8core
    @hard8core 9 лет назад +4

    Sorry I'm confused, why was phenolphthalein used? Isn't the equivalence point of Phenolphthalein way above 7 and so when the slightly pink colour is reached, the solution would be basic? And since this is a strong acid and strong base being titrated with each other, shouldn't the end point of the indicator match the equivalence point of a pH of around 7, not above 7? Other than that which confused me, this was a very clear and helpful video.

    • @JeffinerM
      @JeffinerM 8 лет назад

      I have also wondered about this, however, almost all resources I've found describing titrations with HCl and NaOH, they have used phenolphthalein... So I am guessing that this is just standard!

    • @Timothy656
      @Timothy656 8 лет назад +1

      You're technically correct although this is why you are only after a very faint pink colour change and not a deep pink colour change as that would indicate it was way above the Ph of 7. Whereas a slight pink colour change indicates its very close to a pH of around 7 (neutral).

    • @mohammadabbas3643
      @mohammadabbas3643 7 лет назад

      Jennifer Mitchell It depends upon the nature of base. For strong bases like NaOH and K0H you have to use Phenolphtalein and for weak bases like Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 you should use Methyl Orange.

    In the lab safety lecture, I always teach my students to wear least amount of jewelry coming to a chemistry lab, best not wear any jewelry at all. Now, one of my students just showed me this video, where the model doing titration here is wearing three rings and multiple bracelets. What a slap in the face, and a dis-service to the vast chemistry instructors like me.

    • @mohammadabbas3643
      @mohammadabbas3643 7 лет назад +1

      victor harris No Sir the type of indicator depends upon the of base. For strong bases like NaOH and KOH you have to use Phenolphtalein and for weak bases like Na2CO3 or NaHCO3 you should use Methyl Orange.

      No if you use universal indicator it will only tell you the ph and it would be difficult to determine an end point. Phenolphthalein is used as it gives you a clear end point
