Whitesville used to have some very prominent black individuals. One of the best I can remember was Happy Cohen if I remember his name correctly. He ran a shoe shop in town and was one of the finest people I ever met in my life. In school, we were taught that Whiteville used to be called Jarrold's Valley and in the 30s they changed the name to reflect the name of a settler named White because they got a federal post office.
I lived in Packsville as a kid. We moved off when I was young. I remember Pearls hot dogs, juniors pizza, and Benjamin Franklins. I loved visiting my grandma in the summer. Loved the memories.
California was my home for almost my entire life aside from colleges and military service. I just recently moved to West Virginia, the place is great, definitely worth the move. No liberal BS, affordable living, low property taxes and utilities, cheap gas, and great people. But good lord the drivers here….wow, I’ve been around the country and this place takes the cake for their drivers lol
Born and raised in WV. Came to California in 1996 to teach at a CC in San Diego. I liked CA (until recently with all this progressiveness) but can’t wait until the day I can retire. I’m running back to WV as fast as I can. No better people on earth than Mountaineers.

Dude. You did awesome. This is great. Very touching. I’ve spent a lot of time riding dirtbikes in the hills of WV. Blount/Coalfield/Beckley and many many others. It is amazing how hardy and tough, yet friendly the mountain folks are. I feel blessed to live so close to WV. It is my favorite state. By far and I’ve traveled all over the country.
My grandfather, John Clendenen, was Justice of Peace in Whitesville from 1919 until 1952. Lots of memories in that town. We lived in Racine, which is also on Coal River.
Hey, I drove through there last summer, looking for a store and gas. I did buy gas as I was nearly out. It’s a shame. The people I met were all friendly. I don’t think race is a big deal in these places. The issue is poverty. Sure, rent is cheap, but where do you work? Not there! Jobs are too far away for long-distance commuting, especially in the winter. Maybe some folks in Whitesville want a teacher? I was forced to resign due to my age and having RA. I’m a liability in the age of COVID. Every year since 2005, I get pulled over by the police in rural WV. No, not for my race, rather, for my NY license plates! They never say that, but I’ve never been ticketed or charged with anything. I think I’m suspected automatically of dealing in opioids, weapons, or fireworks. But when they take a look and talk to me, they realize I’m nothing other than what I say, a white lady from NYC who likes to take her week-long vacation meeting the REAL people in unpretentious beautiful rural places. Plus, it’s cheap, for someone who won’t work for ultra-liberal public schools. I LOVE WV. The people are down to earth, resilient, friendly. The country itself is beautiful. I miss it this summer, but God had other plans. I’ve moved in with elderly parents in their 90s who’d otherwise be in a nursing home. No way if I can help it.

West Virginia is a beautiful place there isn't a town, a holler or city in West Virginia that I have not been to for work. I would travel from Richmond Virginia to West Virginia 3-4 times a week for 16 years and loved doing so. I met some of the nicest people ever and saw the most beautiful countryside. West Virginia is so beautiful that I am currently contemplating between West Virginia and Kentucky to purchase land and build a log cabin. I have been to whitesville numerous times for work and love that small "town". It would take me away from the hustle and bustle of the city where I was from (i e. Richmond va) and many times I would pull overnighters so I didn't have to drive back to the city and I could enjoy the scenery in the beauty that West Virginia offers a little longer. Thanks for sharing this, it brings me back to a much better time.
Was in Whitesville today. There was some coal coming out of a nearby mine. Pretty depressing, for the most part. I went to the Chevy dealership, and it’s hard to grasp who in the area could afford a new car.
This is so sad, wish it would bounce back but I lived in a small coal mining town myself and if you drive through it now, if you blink your eyes you will never know you drive in the small town.
Thank you for posting this. My mother's side of the family lived in Whitesville during the Great Depression and afterwards. I lived there briefly and attended school in the big brick / stone schoolhouse. It is nice to see the Star on the side of the hill, after all of these years.. I wonder if it is still lit up during the holidays. Is the swinging bridge across the Coal River still there? Fond and Sweet memories from my child hood.
Hey cousin Rick, It sure has changed since we were kids. I have a lot of stories from Dad about moving to Whitesville when he was a baby. Walking 12 miles from the mining camp where they lived to the house they were building up on the hill. Aunt Mildred doing homework by kerosene lamp as they had no electricity when he was little. Lots of good memories of country life. I spent time between Seth where Mom's side of the family lived and Dad's family in Whitesville. Those were the days when you knew your extended family, learned from them, and spent quality time with good hardworking people. I would not trade those experiences for anything.
I grew up in the area in the 90s and spent a lot of Friday and Saturday nights at Spartans or Juniors. There was another one there that I can't remember the name of now, but there was a hellacious fight there one night and I got cracked in the head with a pool ball. Lol, sure do miss those people and good times. Moved away after high school and rarely make it back there now. Hate seeing what's become of the town. Good video, thanks for sharing.
This video is amazing! I was born in Charleston, WVA in 1953 and grew up for a few years in Sylvester and Eunice. My grandparents were Robert (Emmit ) and Hazel Harris. They lived in Whitesville, Sylvester, and Eunice. They had 14 children. My grandfather worked 63 years in the mines ( management) and retired in early 1960. The coal companies gave the family everything they needed...food, clothing, etc. They were good people! We are white, but there wasn't a racist among my family. Whites and blacks were all poor and when the minors came out of the mines each day, they were all the same color! I never had a white privilege card. My friends were all colors. I am 69 and never was a racist..EVER! I treat others the way they treat me. WHITE PRIVILEGE- OR- Systematic Racism is another way of spreading hate...but most white people do not fit into these types of people. My father said it best..." YOU CAN'T FIGHT RACISM WITH RACISM !! " In other words...You have to be a racist to call me a racist. If you call me a racist because of my white color, then you are the biggest racist of them all! Peace! David......
I spent my childhood summers around Whitesville Seth, West Virginia Sylvester I remember Whitesville that was the big city. I remember the shoe man he was black my father used to shoot pool in the pool hall. I never really lived around there always visited my relatives talking early 60s I’m 66 now.
My dads name was Price, he was born in 1915...heworked in the coal mines...his sister Ruby, married Wriston Brown, so all her kids (my cousins) were Brown, but my dad had kin named Price.....im willing to bet, we are related in some way....Jerry Price from Lexinton SC....but now livin temporaly in Panama City Fl...
I am from a town called Whitesville Ky. It is definitely pure white. Did not know there was anything but white folks till I went up the road to Owensboro ky.
Very very impressed with you I was raised on a Military base and we did not see color ever and I will never understand that their are people who don't even know me but hate because of the color of my skin God bless you man we all are Americans.
I lived here in a lot of my childhood in front of the Daniels Chevrolet, then to a back alley house on the back road of whitesville and I’ve always wanted to go back because I loved it there. I was a child police officer! They let me run police lights and stuff on my 4 wheeler and I went to the police station every week
Well yes I'm white & I'm white because my parents are white AND I'm privileged & I'm privileged because I get to live in this great country called U.S.A . Everyone in this country is PRIVIGED.
racism has a simple remedy... everybody are not required to like anybody for any reason they choose, as required for freedom to reign... an other requirement for freedom to reign is KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOUR SELF... if you keep your hands to your self everyone else will be free from you, if all others keep their hands to their self everyone will be free from everyone...
I grew up in boone county ....Lived in Whitesville, Keith, Orgas and Cooper's town .... Can't believe it's so drug infested now. Breaks my heart to see it
As a blk woman, I wish diversity was more widely excepted. I've been looking for land to homestead and its become burdensome to have to really gauge where I could go. Most areas with the land Im looking for the demographics are usually omnly 2-3% black. I know that if im in the middle of 50 acres of woods....who cares. But I would like to know that I have neighbors that I can still get along with.. To trade/barter or even just be friends.
I have lived on Big Coal River since I was 22. I am now 66. I am half white/ half Hawaiian. There’s no racism here in Whitesville. We look out for each other, in times of illness, tragedy, or emergency, we take care of each other. You are more than welcome!
The sad thing about this video, think what a decent sized manufacturing plant would do for this community ! ! Politicians and corp let our factories go to China !
Thank you, you are right in all area. I think history Then we learn in school in the actual history pass in front of us becomes different mindset thought feelings expression. Martin luthern king is writing just as well of any educated scholar. But the common man the common folks in this country is 100% right just as well We should treat everyone with love like Bob Marley. We should treat everyone with love like Bob Marley, John Lennon of The Beatles All we need is love.
Very sad what happened to West Virginia. Especially those that were in the coal mining industrial and had a very rough growing up and trying to make a dollar. I tip my hat to y’all. #GodBlessAmerica
White privilege does not mean that you don’t have to work hard or overcome obstacles. It means that your race/skin color is not one of them. We see this in so many areas of society. Hell… white history is taught as part of the standard curriculum. Black history is an elective. There’s ample evidence to support this.
It's the word privilege that gets people fired up though.. when you look at the poorest families in Appalachia they are by far the least privileged people in america.
I grew up visiting from Michigan to see my family in Whitesville. You walked right passed my great grandmother's old house downtown there. Such great memories there. Back in the day it was such a good place!!!

Excellent video
My grandma and pa owned Schoolcraft Drive inn restaurant an bar. I miss the place a lot.
They were the best Pizzas in town too Eric!!!! Loved Devil and Blanche, and Theresa
I'm 53 spent alot of my summer's at my grandparents in whitesville they lived on out on dirt road but we loved it
I was born in WVA , lived in Whiteville, Dry creek area.
My father's name was Farley Hudson.
I'm from Boone County too, Ashford. You're right, Whitesville is a shell of what it once was.
Whenever people speak on white privilege here in California, I always educate them on West Virginia's history and culture..
Ha! I will be buying a home here! Love it
Hello friend do you still live there?
My mother was a Jarrell, born in Montcoal, raised on Clear Fork, I've traveled thru Whitesville many, many times.
I told my White son, don’t you EVER run from the cops. I can help you fight in court but I can’t help you if you’re dead.
Ever think about going into journalism? You could be very good at it. Impressive video, I did share this on Twitter.
Never reall thought about it. I appreciate the share, thank you!

I am from a town called Whitesville Ky. It is definitely pure white. Did not know there was anything but white folks till I went up the road to Owensboro ky.
I use to work at the rail yard. I had to drive from Logan to work. I love the drive. Hour an half drive one way
The wife's family is from Boone County. It is beautiful there.
Love Appalachia
Very very impressed with you I was raised on a Military base and we did not see color ever and I will never understand that their are people who don't even know me but hate because of the color of my skin God bless you man we all are Americans.
I lived here in a lot of my childhood in front of the Daniels Chevrolet, then to a back alley house on the back road of whitesville and I’ve always wanted to go back because I loved it there.
I was a child police officer! They let me run police lights and stuff on my 4 wheeler and I went to the police station every week
I was at Daniel’s today! I wonder how people in the area buy new vehicles.
I would hate own those empty buildings. Stranded asset. Property tax?
West Virginians are the nicest humans I have ever met
A lot of small towns up north Michigan look a lot like this
LeBron is oppressed these people have it good
I grew up in Whitesville also, lived up on the street across from coach Arvon in the 1960s
I went to Mt hope (dayette county) schools.. the first time I met a black person she turned out to be one of my best friends
Breaks my heart to see it
Thank you for your service!
Much appreciated
So…NO! This is not typical WV life. Our state is amazing! Sorry for his upbringing.

If you turned to your right, my old house would be right there
As a blk woman, I wish diversity was more widely excepted.
It was a White woman who was at UV Berkeley,CA that came up with white privilege.
Jay you should run for governor. You speak the plain truth that’s not offensive.
I could retire there myself, I'm from country blood, even though I was raised military.
May God bless you all the days of your life. :-)
Whitesville is where I'm from
I worked front little town for about 7 years

I am west virginia and it is sad to see a town in this shape where I come from
I'm from Appalachia and I love it but you have no idea what white privilege is.
Explain it to me
Yes explain it please!
White privilege does not mean that you don’t have to work hard or overcome obstacles. It means that your race/skin color is not one of them. We see this in so many areas of society. Hell… white history is taught as part of the standard curriculum. Black history is an elective. There’s ample evidence to support this.
@@HoodrowProductions how many times have you been or were you harassed by the cops as a poor white person?
It's the word privilege that gets people fired up though.. when you look at the poorest families in Appalachia they are by far the least privileged people in america.
Thank Obama and the rest of the libs
I grew up visiting from Michigan to see my family in Whitesville. You walked right passed my great grandmother's old house downtown there. Such great memories there. Back in the day it was such a good place!!!
That's terrible about the price gouging. Can't the county district attorney do something.
Lmao born and raised in WV. Most people regardless of color of skin is in same boat living paycheck to paycheck. People are people period.
amen Brother you and me both
I grew up in Orgas, right down the road.
Great video, but you lost me at the end my friend. Peace !
What part exactly? Please share
@@HoodrowProductions When you turned it political, that turned a great video to crap. Sorry, You had an agenda from the very beginning looking back on it. Seriously ?
@@lino5204 Did you read title?
I’m a minority and I thought your video was good. I don’t see any rant toward being racist.
Somebooooooooody threw Sketti all over my what nots!
My pappal would laugh if he was told he had white privilege. He mined coal for 30 years before agent orange took him.
You clearly don't understand what minorities mean....a lot of you don't. But God bless you anyway.
@@queencobra1507 I'm all ears, please tell us all about it.
Lost me at about 7:15mins.... You need to watch a few videos yourself. If you take the stance the civilian is in the wrong because they "may disrespectful". The police officer SHOULD always be in control. They are THE AUTHORITY, they must rise to a higher standard. Respect is earned, not "given". Talk to someone you respect who understands white privilege. It's not as simplistic as your making.
How do you explain all those cops killing unarmed children of 8-12 years of age who were just walking in their neighborhoods??
What the fuck are you talking about?
This isn’t Brazil cops don’t shoot someone unless it’s justified
100% correct
good presentation.
Very well said
West Virginia is a great place to live. People talk about drugs jus because they looking for them. They are other states worst
🤣😂You have no idea😂🤣
White privilege simply means that your race isn’t the cause of your hardships. You just made a whole rant displaying that you didn’t have an understanding of the phrase. Smh
And you just proved you have a lower intelligence than him
Hardships don't come from merely skin color. I've never seen an example of this. I think you missed the point of my video.
