  • New tractor, new issues. Previous owner of this Unstyled 1936 John Deere A said the carburetor was constantly flooding, so he never drove the tractor. We find out why the DLTX 72 carburetor was flooding and fix it. We also briefly check the magneto to verify strong, consistent spark.

    There's so many small parts and components to carburetors it makes me a little overwhelmed to work on them. Only way to get over phobias is to do them head-on. This video helps me. You make it look simple. Strong spark too. That's great!

      These ones aren't too hard. This one came apart too easy... Usually I have to use a lot of heat. And if you record yourself taking it apart, then you know where everything goes when you're putting it back together. 😅

    Quick test, hold the carb upside down and blow on the fuel inlet.
    Got a DLTX 109 on the bench right now. That reminds me i should go check the mail. 🤔
    Thanks for your efforts and the vids.
    Oh, favorite tool is my head Petzl headlamp. I worked for a farm we were working 24000 acres and the seeders were going 24-7 that spring. I was tending seeders and was on night shift. I got tired of climbing ladders with a flashlight in hand so i picked up a head lamp. Havent been without one since.

      Ha ha! I have to laugh because I actually trimmed out the footage of me blowing into the carb while flipping it upside-down. So yup, I agree, it's a quick way to check your work.

      Yes, this one was too easy. Usually I have to use heat and patience to get the brass plugs out. I've done a few more in depth videos of me disassembling and cleaning very dirty rusty carbs, so that's why I kinda breezed through the disassembly and reassembly. Here are a few links...

    I've been wanting to get one of those cleaners. Ross The Oliver Man uses one from Harbor Freight that has worked pretty good for him. Most of the carburetors he works on are in terrible condition so he may have to run them through the cleaner more than once. Wonder how well not setting the parts in a bag would work.

    • @jonelsonster
      @jonelsonster  6 дней назад +1

      The ultrasonic cleaners work off of sound waves, so the plastic bag will absorb some of the energy, but otherwise if have to use a lot more cleaner. This way I only use the cleaner I put in the bag. Glass jars would work better because less energy is lost passing through the glass than the bag.

      Thanks 🙏🏻. I designed and built my tester. I tried buying one, but they are hard to find, expensive, and big and old... So I decided to just build one. I'll have to make a video on it. It wasn't too hard to do.

    How did you adjust the float to sit where you wanted it to be? Sorry if I missed that part. Thanks for your interesting videos!

    • @jonelsonster
      @jonelsonster  5 дней назад +1

      @@brianspoelman1650 sorry,I didn't show that step. To set the height of the float you just bend the arm on the float. It's brass, so it bends pretty easily, but you need to be a little careful not to break soldered joint where the arm attaches to the float. So it's a little iterative taking the float in and out until its the right height.

    I didn't know anything about that spring-loaded choke shaft!!! I wonder if that's what I need for my '43 A. Mine has a has a choke rod accessible from the seat--like you'd have for an electric start. But, mine is a hand-start A...and the choke doesn't have the spring-loaded mechanism. I am assuming my carb came off another A with electric start. Anyway, my tractor is hard to start. With the choke full closed I get a good bang off the first rotation of the flywheel then it dies before I can reach the choke. Then I have to turn the flywheel at least a dozen times with the choke half-open or so. Maybe I need this spring-loaded choke?

    • @jonelsonster
      @jonelsonster  День назад +1

      We only have a few have start tractors, but my experience is similar... They'll pop with full choke on the first or second rotation of the flywheel, but then it's like a guessing game of they need more or less fuel for the next 5 minutes of cranking. 😂 I think they start easier with more fuel, so I always err on the side of more choke 🤣

    I’ve seen all kinds of mismatched carbs on these tractors, it’s surprising how well an A will run on a carb meant for a B.

    • @jonelsonster

      Agreed. They really don't seem to care. We actually have an A carburetor on our G right now. And when I bought one of our parts As, it has a big nut G carb on it.

    How were those early carbs made? looks like a cast line between two halves? I haven't a clue!

    • @jonelsonster
      @jonelsonster  6 дней назад +1

      Cast iron. So I imagine they just poured molten iron into a sand mold. Then lots of little drills and fancy jigs. It seems like aluminum would have been easier to work with... But the cast iron is a lot more durable.

    • @brianrvd
      @brianrvd 6 дней назад +1

      It is a one piece iron casting. They were cast in a sand mold which was made of two halves. The line you see on the casting is where the two mold halves came together.
